Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder marked a significant shift from a rugged, body-on-frame SUV to a more car-like crossover. This fourth-generation Pathfinder (2013-2020) offered a unibody construction, prioritizing comfort and fuel efficiency. Key trims included S, SV, SL, and Platinum. Pricing ranged from around $29,000 new to $10,000-$20,000 used, depending on condition and mileage. It's popular for its spacious three-row seating, comfortable ride, and improved fuel economy compared to its predecessor.
The Good

The 2013 Pathfinder offered a comfortable and spacious interior, appealing to families. Its V6 engine provided adequate power for daily driving. While not the most rugged SUV, its improved fuel efficiency was a major selling point for the practical buyer. The sleek design and available features like the panoramic sunroof added to its appeal.

The Bad

The 2013 Pathfinder's CVT transmission is a known weak point, with reports of shuddering and failure. Premature wear of the timing chain has also been reported. Some owners experienced issues with the infotainment system and interior trim quality. It's crucial to check the service history and thoroughly inspect the transmission before purchasing.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Have?

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder has faced several reported problems, primarily concerning its Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Many owners have reported shuddering, hesitation, and even complete transmission failure, often at relatively low mileage. This issue appears more prevalent in the 2013 and 2014 model years. Another common complaint involves timing chain issues, which can lead to costly repairs if not addressed promptly.
Several recalls have been issued for the 2013 Pathfinder, including issues with the hood latch, which could unexpectedly open while driving, and problems with the brake light switch. Check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information and to see if your specific VIN is affected. Long-term reliability concerns center around the longevity of the CVT and the potential for expensive repairs related to the transmission and timing chain. Some owners have also reported issues with the infotainment system, navigation, and interior trim pieces.

How long will the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder last?

With regular maintenance, a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, the key to longevity is diligent maintenance, especially concerning the CVT transmission. Regular fluid changes (more frequent than Nissan's recommendation) are crucial. Owners who proactively address potential issues and follow a strict maintenance schedule are more likely to experience long-term durability. The CVT is the biggest long-term weakness. Timing chain wear and tear is also a factor to consider as the vehicle ages. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the lifespan of critical components.

I had a head-on collision with my 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum going 60-65 mph. The entire engine compartment is gnarly; the engine is upside down and backwards, but nothing from under the front hood entered the vehicle. A law enforcement officer told me how surprised he was and said that if I plan to buy another vehicle, I should buy a Nissan Pathfinder because he had never seen so much damage to a vehicle without the driver un-injured.

My Nissan Pathfinder 2013 model makes noise coming from the fan i change in the fan I sill makes noise when I’m driving and all lights are on the dash board when i want the Nissan company they told me my car has a lot of issue transmission problem brakes problem ABS problem the car only makes that noise the other thing it’s working well when I’m driving. It doesn’t show me how many kilometre I’m driving. Sometimes the car is quiet and it doesn’t show me any lights

Excellent traction from a stop on a powder snow packed 8% hill. The electronic traction control system is fantastic. We bought the 2013 platinum model exactly 10 years ago, driving an average 10,000 miles a year. (Currently indicates 102000 miles) We have had zero problems and intend to keep it until I’m dead (which I hope is not for a long time). If you can find a used one, buy it after it passes inspection.

Mom of 3
We purchased this car as a dealer demo. It has very low miles and it fit the needs of our family. We are now on our 3rd transmission. The original, the recall replacement and now the third one with less than 40,000 miles on it and Nissan won’t stand behind it. Just dropped $5,600 on a new transmission and transfer case seals. We fought hard with corporate and essentially got told “sorry about your luck.” We are too upside down on it to dump it for another 6 months but rest assured, we will never own another. Our local dealership was wonderful and helpful and tried to plead our case. Hate the fact we won’t be using them after our next car purchase.
don’t buy a Nissan
It has been been a problem for the past 4 years! I Don’t have the luxury of just switching out cars so I’m stuck. I have called and received NO help from Nissan. My visits are broken. I had to replace both front door handles (doors would not open)! Alternator went out- got it fixed and back in shop a week later! I will never buy a NISSAN AGAIN! Don’t do it!

I bought mine in December 2012. The gas m ileage was never as announced in the window sticker : 21 and 26, I only got 19 and 22. Nissan fixed the CVT issue by reprogramming the computer, after my mileage went down to 17 in city> I have not measured in highway. Nissan does not find any issues as the computer does not record a problem. Stay away of this vehicle as much as you can

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder came with a decent array of tech features for its time. Standard features included a CD player, six speakers, and tri-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims offered a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and a navigation system. The Platinum trim boasted a Bose audio system and a dual-pane sunroof.
Driver-assistance features, depending on the trim, included blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Optional features included a DVD entertainment system for rear passengers.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) show the 2013 Pathfinder receiving good scores in several categories. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it a 4-star overall safety rating. 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Prices and Market Value

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder had a starting MSRP of around $29,000 when new. Currently, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on the trim, mileage, and condition. The Pathfinder has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and the known CVT issues. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history (especially regarding the CVT), mileage, and geographic location. Models with lower mileage and a documented history of CVT maintenance command higher prices. The Platinum trim tends to hold its value slightly better due to its added features.

2013 Nissan Pathfinder Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder sits in a moderate range for insurance costs. Fuel costs are average for a V6 SUV. Maintenance costs can be higher than average due to potential CVT repairs and timing chain issues. Repair costs can be significant if the transmission fails. Long-term ownership costs can be costly if preventative maintenance is neglected and major repairs become necessary. Overall, while not the most economical, diligent care can mitigate some of the higher costs.

2013 Nissan Pathfinder Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder competed with the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse. In terms of performance, it was comparable, but the Ford Explorer offered a sportier driving experience. Feature-wise, it held its own, especially in the higher trims. However, reliability is where the Pathfinder fell short, particularly compared to the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, which have stronger reputations for long-term dependability.
Price-wise, the Pathfinder was often competitively priced, making it attractive to budget-conscious buyers. However, the potential for costly CVT repairs can offset the initial savings. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot would be better alternatives, despite potentially costing more upfront. The Chevrolet Traverse offers similar space and features, but its reliability record is also not stellar. The Ford Explorer presents a more engaging driving experience but can also have reliability concerns. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic, especially focusing on the transmission, before purchasing a used 2013 Pathfinder.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is ideal for families needing three-row seating and decent cargo space on a budget. However, it's only worth buying used if the price reflects the potential for CVT issues and a thorough inspection reveals a well-maintained vehicle with documented CVT service. Avoid models with high mileage or a questionable service history. The SV or SL trims offer a good balance of features without the premium price of the Platinum. Consider extended warranty options that cover the transmission. If reliability is paramount, exploring alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot is advisable, even if it means paying a bit more.

I had a head-on collision with my 2013 Nissan Pathfinder

I had a head-on collision with my 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum going 60-65 mph. The entire engine compartment is gnarly; the engine is upside down and backwards, but nothing from under the front hood entered the vehicle. A law enforcement officer told me how surprised he was and said that if I plan to buy another vehicle, I should buy a Nissan Pathfinder because he had never seen so much damage to a vehicle without the driver un-injured.

Transmission ISSUES 2x

We bought the 2013 model in June 2019. Within a year we had to replace the transmission, and within 18 months we had to replace the A/C. Luckily I paid for the extended warranty. Just this month, the new 2019 transmission is slipping again. The warranty expired in June.

I’d buy it again

Excellent traction from a stop on a powder snow packed 8% hill. The electronic traction control system is fantastic. We bought the 2013 platinum model exactly 10 years ago, driving an average 10,000 miles a year. (Currently indicates 102000 miles) We have had zero problems and intend to keep it until I’m dead (which I hope is not for a long time). If you can find a used one, buy it after it passes inspection.

Nissan CVT is a ticking time bomb

We bought this car used with 60k miles. It had recently had the CVT replaced, which should have been red flag
