Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2015 Nissan Pathfinder is a mid-size SUV that offers a blend of comfort, practicality, and fuel efficiency. Part of the fourth generation (2013-2020), it shifted from a truck-based platform to a more car-like unibody construction, enhancing ride quality. Key trims include S, SV, SL, and Platinum. Its popularity stems from its spacious three-row seating and affordability. New, it ranged from approximately $30,000 to $43,000 depending on trim and options.
The Good

The 2015 Pathfinder boasts a comfortable ride and a user-friendly interior, appealing to practical buyers needing a family-friendly SUV. Its V6 engine provides adequate power, and its fuel economy is decent for its class. Aesthetically, it presents a modern, sleek design. The availability of features like a panoramic sunroof adds an emotional appeal.

The Bad

Some 2015 Pathfinders have been reported to have transmission issues, so a thorough inspection and test drive are essential. Interior materials can feel cheap in lower trims. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a point of concern for some owners due to potential reliability issues. Be sure to check the vehicle history for any reported problems.

What Problems Does the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder Have?

The most frequently reported problems with the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder often revolve around the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Some owners have experienced shuddering, slipping, or complete transmission failure at relatively low mileage. This issue is not unique to the 2015 model year but has been reported across several years of the Pathfinder with the CVT. There have been recalls related to issues like potential brake light switch malfunction and hood latch corrosion, so it's important to check if the specific vehicle has had these recalls addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns also include potential issues with the electronic systems and sensors. Some owners have reported problems with the navigation system, climate control, and other electronic components. While not as widespread as the transmission issues, these problems can contribute to higher long-term ownership costs. Regular maintenance and careful inspection before purchase are crucial for mitigating these risks.

How long will the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder last?

A well-maintained 2015 Nissan Pathfinder can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, its longevity greatly depends on consistent maintenance and driving habits. The CVT transmission remains a potential long-term weak point. Regular fluid changes, ideally more frequent than Nissan's recommendation, can help prolong its life. Owners should also be vigilant about addressing any unusual noises or behavior from the transmission promptly. Rust can also be an issue in colder climates. Regular washing and undercarriage cleaning is recommended.

80,000 miles and the transmission is out, and oh sorry you’re 20,000 miles over the warranty. Bought it new hoping for a good reliable vehicle from a company that was “supposed” to be very up front and supportive. Not the case. CVT transmissions are junk.

In March 2018 I bought used Nissan Pathfinder 2015. At that time this vehicle had 63,000 km on it. I own this vehicle for 1.5 years. During this time total repair costs were $6,280: - March 2018: $180 – replaced drive belt - May 2018: $3,500 – replaced AC evaporator. There was only one OEM evaporator in Canada. When it was brought and installed, it turned to be defective. After that another after market AC evaporator was installed instead. - June 2018: drive belt was replaced again - September 2018: radiator fan needs to be replaced. Fixing costs were just over $1000. - August 2019: HVAC block started leaking. Fixing cost is $1,600. I contacted Nissan in Canada and Japan. Nissan Canada replied that maintenance is key to maintain reliability. Sure, malfunctioned AC evaporator, defective radiator fan, leaking HVAC block – all of them require a lot maintenance. I am not sure why Nissan Canada lies like that. Nissan Japan offered a $100 gas card. Sure, $100 gas is going to help a lot with repair cost of $6,280. I asked Nissan to recognize this vehicle defective, but Nissan refused to do this. So, it means that this is normal Nissan quality. You decide if you are interested in such “quality”. I also checked how customers are satisfied with Nissan Pathfinder on Consumer report: 2017: 3 out of 5 (when I bought my 2015, it also had higher rating – it decrease over the time) 2016: 2 out of 5 2015: 1 out of 5 2014: 1 out of 5 2013: 2 out of 5

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Nissan Pathfinder offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include a rearview camera and tri-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims add features like a larger touchscreen display, navigation, and a premium Bose audio system.

Driver-assistance features include available blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree parking camera system.

Safety features are comprehensive, with standard features like anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features, depending on the trim, include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2015 Nissan Pathfinder received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). It earned a 4-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. Specific IIHS ratings should be checked based on the build date as some changes were made mid-year.

2015 Nissan Pathfinder Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder ranged from approximately $30,000 for the base S trim to around $43,000 for the top-tier Platinum trim. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Pathfinder has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and reported transmission issues. Resale value is further affected by factors like the vehicle's maintenance history, accident record, and overall condition. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices.

2015 Nissan Pathfinder Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Nissan Pathfinder's insurance costs are generally average for its class. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on driving habits, with an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of around 22 mpg. Maintenance can be relatively affordable, but potential CVT repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Regular oil changes and tire rotations are crucial. Overall, while generally not overly expensive, the Pathfinder's potential transmission issues make it potentially more costly to own than some competitors.

2015 Nissan Pathfinder Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Nissan Pathfinder competes with the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Explorer. In terms of performance, it's comparable, although the Ford Explorer offers a more powerful optional engine. Feature-wise, it aligns with its rivals, offering similar tech and convenience features depending on the trim. However, the Pathfinder's reliability is a concern compared to the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, both known for their long-term dependability.

While the Pathfinder may be more affordable on the used market, the potential for CVT issues makes the Highlander or Pilot better choices for long-term reliability, even if they come at a slightly higher price. The Chevrolet Traverse offers more cargo space, but its fuel economy is lower. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot are recommended alternatives. If budget is the biggest concern and you can find a Pathfinder with documented transmission service and low mileage, it could be a reasonable option.

Ranks #902 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Nissan Pathfinder is ideal for families needing a spacious three-row SUV at an affordable price point. However, the potential for CVT issues makes it a risky purchase unless thoroughly inspected. It's worth buying only if you can find a well-maintained example with documented transmission service history and low mileage. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Consider higher trims (SL or Platinum) for added features, but prioritize a clean vehicle history and transmission health over trim level. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot, even if they cost more.

Not bad at all in its segment.

I’m driving this car from 2015. It’s been seven years and I did not have any single major issues other than normal maintenance of break pads and tires. Little concern of handling on curves and high speed above 85MPH. Overall its good.

Loving a 6-year old car that’s new to me

This vehicle is my first personal daily driver in several years (I had company cars before, which were always base models). I found an SL that feels over the top with luxury to me. I’m loving the 4-wheel drive in the snow, and the confidence on the road in wet and dry conditions. It goes where you point it! Very comfortable, even on a long commute of 2-hours during a recent snow storm.

So Far So Great!

I can’t say enough about how awesome this SUV is. I absolutely love it. It rides so nice, has luxurious features, I feel like I’m in Buckinham palace on wheels. It has been reliable so far. I wish the gas mileage was a little better but is good for the size of vehicle. Everyday I can’t wait for work to end so I can drive it home. Love it!
