Rating: 4.46
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is a compact SUV that blends on-road comfort with Jeep's legendary off-road capability. Part of the KL generation (2014-2018), it features a distinctive design and is available in trims like Sport, Latitude, Limited, and the trail-ready Trailhawk. The original MSRP ranged from around $24,000 to $35,000. It's popular for its comfortable ride, available V6 engine, and impressive 4x4 systems.
The Good

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee offers decent performance with optional V6 power and excellent off-road capability, particularly in the Trailhawk trim. It provides a comfortable ride for daily driving. From a practical standpoint, it offers a good amount of cargo space and available technology. For emotional buyers, it carries the Jeep brand's adventurous spirit.

The Bad

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee has some potential weaknesses. The 9-speed automatic transmission has been a source of complaints regarding rough shifting. Some owners have reported electrical issues. Fuel economy, especially with the V6, isn't the best in its class. Its polarizing front-end styling isn't universally liked.

What Problems Does the 2017 Jeep Cherokee Have?

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee has faced a few frequently reported problems. The most common complaint revolves around the 9-speed automatic transmission. Many owners have reported rough shifting, hesitation, and outright failure. These issues seem to stem from software glitches and valve body problems.
Electrical issues are also sometimes reported, including problems with the Uconnect system and various sensors. Some owners have experienced issues with the climate control system.
Recalls have been issued for the 2017 Cherokee, including those related to transmission software, potential fuel leaks, and power liftgate malfunctions. Check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information.
Long-term reliability is a concern for some, particularly regarding the transmission. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes for the transmission, is crucial. Addressing any warning signs early can help prevent more significant problems down the road. The frequency of transmission issues makes it a key area to investigate before purchasing a used 2017 Cherokee.

How long will the 2017 Jeep Cherokee last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 Jeep Cherokee can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability is heavily influenced by maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, timely transmission fluid replacements, and addressing minor issues promptly are essential.
The 9-speed transmission remains a potential long-term weakness. Neglecting transmission maintenance significantly increases the risk of premature failure. Some components like suspension parts and brakes may require more frequent attention compared to other vehicles in its class.
Positive Owner Reviews

My second Jeep ever, my second offroad-capable vehicle ever. Alas, my first one sank. The first was a 2020 Cherokee Trailhawk. This one is older, and has more miles on it. Hopefully age and experience will mean that it is wiser and will avoid the same fate as its predecessor. Aside from the folly of the first one that fatally underestimated the depth of a mud puddle that it sought to cross, both have proven to be solid, reliable, capable, and amazingly tough vehicles, capable of going places that normal cars dare not go.
Joe
Beautiful styling and roominess. I'll let you know more as I drive it a few miles. It's going to be a great family car. Glad I found it!
Vianey
This car met all my needs I'm so in love with her , I have a plenty room for my husband my son and our Dog
Negative Owner Reviews

My 2017 Jeep Cherokee has been in the dealership service department since the second month I owned it. Coolant leak, transmission problems, alternator failure, etc. I'm on my third battery because the alternator is still faulty. The vehicle has 34,000 miles on it. It will completely shut off going 55 down the highway, the wheels lock up and steering no longer works. This is the most dangerous car I've ever owned. I would not recommend it to anyone else!
Catherine
Engine needed to be replaced due to an oil consumption problem. 9 weeks later engine light goes on, car is overheating, service said nothing wrong.
Ed in Denver
Overpriced, cheap materials for the price. Jeep doesn't back up their products. The base package is a farce, like getting a generic volkswagon. Coming from a v-8, the v-6 seems sluggish. Go with a v-8.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee comes with a range of tech and safety features. The base Sport trim features a Uconnect 5.0 infotainment system with a 5-inch touchscreen. Higher trims offer the Uconnect 8.4 system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. A rearview camera is standard on most trims.
Entertainment features include a standard six-speaker audio system, with optional upgrades to a premium Alpine sound system.
Safety features include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific scores. The 2017 Cherokee generally performed well in crash tests, but results vary depending on the specific test and model configuration. It is recommended to check both NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most accurate and up-to-date safety information.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Prices and Market Value

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee had an original MSRP ranging from approximately $24,000 to $35,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from around $12,000 to $20,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim.
The Cherokee has depreciated at an average rate for its class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and trim level. Trailhawk models tend to hold their value better due to their enhanced off-road capabilities. Vehicles with a documented history of transmission issues may experience lower resale values.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2017 Jeep Cherokee are typically average for its class. Fuel costs can be moderate with the I4 engine but higher with the V6. Maintenance costs are also average, but potential transmission repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Repair costs can be higher than some competitors due to the complexity of the transmission and other systems. Overall, the 2017 Cherokee is moderately costly to own, with potential for higher expenses if transmission issues arise.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Jeep Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee competes with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of performance, the Cherokee offers better off-road capability than most of its rivals, especially the Trailhawk trim. The V6 engine provides more power than many base engines in this class.
Regarding features, the Cherokee offers a comparable range of technology and driver-assistance systems. However, its reliability is a concern compared to the CR-V and RAV4, which are known for their dependability. The CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience on pavement.
In terms of price, the Cherokee is generally competitive, but potential repair costs can make it a less attractive option for some buyers.
Alternatives to consider include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 for their superior reliability and fuel efficiency. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more sporty driving experience and a more upscale interior. The Subaru Forester offers standard all-wheel drive and good cargo space.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is ideal for buyers who prioritize off-road capability and a comfortable ride over ultimate reliability. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a documented service history, preferably one where the transmission issues have been addressed. The Trailhawk trim is a good choice for off-road enthusiasts. However, buyers concerned about long-term reliability may want to consider alternatives like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is strongly recommended, especially focusing on the transmission.

The Jeep Cherokee is engineered for lasting a long time, my last Jeep had about 200,000 miles on it. Performance is dismal at times, when you need power wait a while. The gas mileage and ride, and the fact that it powers through snow do make it great for the Nevada winter.

My 2017 Cherokee Trailhawk has 207,000 miles on it and is driven every day. I drove it past the Arctic Circle to the Arctic Ocean in Canada's Northwest Territories a few years ago. Rarely had to use 4 wheel drive. Have replaced shocks and radiator and a few windshields from driving in Alaska and the Yukon. Otherwise, just routine maintenance. Been a heck of a little car.

YE YE

I purchase my jeep brand new, not even 14 miles on it. Got the 3.6 v6, and now has about 43k on it. Aside from minor issues, like having to replace both batteries the first year, and the little electrical quirks it has like the service shifter light that randomly makes an appearance, and the radio getting messed up from an update, (which was covered under the warranty) I love my jeep. It has plenty of acceleration, so much so that I've considered lowering and supercharging it like the big brother SRT model. Obviously, every vehicle has its quirks, and thankfully so far I've only kept up with the oil changes (moderately) I haven't had to replace anything at all aside from the batteries. But, instead of buying oem, I upgraded to the yellow top optima and haven't had any issues. Even has enough juice to jump my diesel that constantly dies! Over all this was a great purchase, hopefully it lasts at least to 200k

Buyer beware!

The jeep overall is a nice comfortable vehicle, but mechanically it's junk. In the past year I've had nothing but problems out of the 3.2 V6. First, the cams, cam followers, and tappets had to be replaced,( happens to about every 3.2 before 100,000 miles, the cam followers are made cheap and go out, scoring the cams.) then it started springing oil leaks, now, it's burning oil at the rate of a quart every 800 miles or so. Was told this is acceptable for over 50,000 miles. If I knew this back when I bought it, I never would have even considered it.

I'll let you know

Beautiful styling and roominess. I'll let you know more as I drive it a few miles. It's going to be a great family car. Glad I found it!

Most reliable car I ever owned

Wasn't the car I was looking for at first. But after I test drove it I feel in love with it. And it was in my price range.
