Rating: 4.52
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is a compact SUV produced after the model was revived in 2014. Its body style is a modern, sleek SUV, departing from the boxier Cherokees of the past. Key trims include the Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. Pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $33,000 when new. It stands out due to its genuine off-road capability (especially the Trailhawk) and comfortable on-road manners, making it a popular choice for diverse drivers.
The Good

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee offers a compelling blend of advantages. Practically, its available V6 provides strong performance and towing capacity. The comfortable interior and user-friendly tech appeal to daily drivers. Emotionally, its Jeep heritage and Trailhawk's off-road prowess instill confidence and adventure. The exterior design is both modern and recognizable.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee include potential issues with the nine-speed automatic transmission, which has been reported to have rough shifting or hesitation. Some owners have also reported electronic glitches and issues with the Uconnect infotainment system. It's wise to inspect these areas during a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2016 Jeep Cherokee Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Jeep Cherokee often revolve around the nine-speed automatic transmission. Issues include hard shifting, hesitation, and a general lack of smoothness. This is a common complaint across several model years using this transmission. Some owners have also reported electrical issues, including problems with the Uconnect infotainment system, power windows, and other electronic components.

Recalls for the 2016 Jeep Cherokee have addressed issues such as potential problems with the transmission software, which could cause unexpected shifting or loss of power. Some recalls also pertained to fuel leaks and other safety-related concerns. Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with the transmission. Regular maintenance, including transmission fluid changes, is crucial. Some owners have experienced premature wear of suspension components and issues with the air conditioning system. Checking for any outstanding recalls and thoroughly inspecting the transmission are recommended when considering a used 2016 Cherokee.

How long will the 2016 Jeep Cherokee last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Jeep Cherokee can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability is influenced by maintenance habits. Neglecting transmission fluid changes or deferring repairs can significantly shorten its lifespan. The transmission is a known weak point, and its longevity depends heavily on regular servicing. Other potential long-term issues include suspension component wear and tear, and potential corrosion in regions with harsh winters. Owners who adhere to recommended maintenance schedules and address issues promptly are more likely to achieve higher mileage and longer service life.
Positive Owner Reviews
Found My Dream SUV!
Was at dealership shopping and this new Jeep Cherokee Lattitude came in on transport. Wanted it the minute I saw it. Jeep dealership had ordered it custom with every option I wanted. Blackout package, V6 a true dual exhaust, sport, power everthing, 4x4 etc. The 4x4 is excellent and never failed me! Its been flawless, aftermarket tuning has turned it into a screaming black speed machine. 112,000 miles so far. No issues with anything! Would buy another if they still made this Cherokee Latitude Special! One very satisfied customer!!!

I have had mine for 7 years full time business , now has 118k miles on it.. and paid off. it has worked great and still operating. I got the service contract and the dealer has been great, exceeded the expectations in all areas. All the dealers I spoken with have been very supportive. Well worth having this jeep. I would buy one again.

Negative Owner Reviews
Stay away
This car does not meet all needs stay away from it. It's actually not a safe vehicle, and it's dangerous to the road. The dealership finds nothing wrong with it.
mojo14e
This car has been a huge disappointment, and in my opinion is a textbook illustration of the disintegration of a great American Brand. My 1996 Grand Cherokee, which I purchased used with 46,000 miles on it, ran beautifully for 150,000 miles with no major incidents or expensive repairs; and when I traded it in in 2006, it had over 220,000 miles on it. I never had any engine or drive train breakdowns, and the Chrysler dealership gave me $1500.00 trade-in allowance! Unheard of for a vehicle with that much mileage at that age. Fast-forward to 2016; I purchased a brand new Jeep Cherokee Latitude. Great for about the first 10,000 miles, then the nightmares began. For starters, at speeds north of 45, applying the breaks causes the entire front end to shudder as if the wheels were about to fall off. The dealership has no explanation for this. The car is too light to be called a Jeep Cherokee; so light, in fact, that at a standstill, when the windshield wipers are operating at high speed, you can actually feel the car rock from side to side along with the wipers. During last winter's snow storms, the 4-wheel-drive was practically useless to get the car moving. My '96 could drive right out of a snow drift up to a foot or so high without so much as a sideways tic; not so with the lazy lightweight Latitude - I actually had to shovel a curved pathway in front of all 4 tires to get the vehicle out of its snowy parking place. DUH. 4-whell drive? Really? At 54,000 miles, the engine started misfiring due to a bad ignition coil - a $900.00 dollar repair bill along with another $600.00 and change worth of "maintenance" to the transmission and drive train which is of course, not covered on the transmission and drive train guarantee. Lousy value for the price; this vehicle was obviously meant to be a stepped-down version of the typical Grand Cherokee - but it pales in comparison in all but price - very, very disappointing.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee features the Uconnect infotainment system, available with either a 5-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen. Standard tech includes Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and an auxiliary input. Optional features include navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a premium audio system.

Driver-assistance features vary by trim level. Available features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. A rearview camera is standard on most trims.

Safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. The 2016 Jeep Cherokee received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). However, specific ratings can vary depending on the model year and trim level. Checking the latest safety ratings from these organizations is recommended.

2016 Jeep Cherokee Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee had a starting MSRP of around $23,000 when new, with higher trims reaching upwards of $33,000. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been moderate, influenced by factors like mileage, condition, and the vehicle's history. Models with lower mileage, clean titles, and good maintenance records command higher resale values. The Trailhawk trim, due to its enhanced off-road capabilities, tends to hold its value better than other trims.

2016 Jeep Cherokee Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee's long-term ownership costs can be considered moderate. Insurance rates are average for its class. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice and driving habits, but expect reasonable expenses. Maintenance costs are also typical, but potential transmission issues can lead to more significant repair bills. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, but it's also not excessively costly, assuming regular maintenance is performed and major repairs are avoided.

2016 Jeep Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Jeep Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of off-road performance, the Cherokee (especially the Trailhawk) surpasses most competitors. However, the CR-V and RAV4 generally offer better reliability ratings. The Mazda CX-5 boasts superior driving dynamics on the road. Feature-wise, the Cherokee is competitive, but the Uconnect system's reliability can be a concern compared to the infotainment systems in the Honda or Toyota. Price-wise, the Cherokee is typically in line with its rivals. Alternatives to consider: If reliability is a top priority, the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 are better choices. For a sportier driving experience, the Mazda CX-5 is preferable. For comparable off-road capability, a used Subaru Forester might be a good option. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and driving needs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is ideal for drivers who value a blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability. It's a worthwhile buy, particularly as a used vehicle, if you prioritize features and styling. However, carefully inspect the transmission and electrical systems before purchasing. The Trailhawk trim is recommended for those seeking genuine off-road performance. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives. Buying a well-maintained used model with a thorough inspection is generally more prudent than purchasing a new one, given the potential for transmission issues.

Found My Dream SUV! on November 28, 2023

My Dream Car Come True!

Good Used Cherokee Everybody seems to like it.

I have just bought this used Cherokee. 70,000 miles I Like it a lot so far. Except I am having a little trouble with my blind spots. Not used to being so low compared to my Ranger Truck. I have a good upgrade. Pretty good milage. Everybody says I got a good deal and so far so good. Drives very nice.

Very nice jeep

I have had mine for 7 years full time business , now has 118k miles on it.. and paid off. it has worked great and still operating. I got the service contract and the dealer has been great, exceeded the expectations in all areas. All the dealers I spoken with have been very supportive. Well worth having this jeep. I would buy one again.

Nice Ride

About a month, so far so good. Bought warranty. The interior is NICE and honestly I fell in love with it on the first drive. Drives REALLY NICE. Has a lot of options that cost a lot of $$ on other brands. Feel like it's a solid vehicle. Coming from VW it seems like you get A LOT for your money.

Piece Of C - don't buy.

Seat sits sideways and kills my back on long drives. Was made in Canada and didn't find out until after I bought it. No warranty. 4WD service light came on 2 months after I bought it. Have had to replace heater blower, O2 sensor, $600+ tune-up, still not driving good. Still get "service 4WD light" on off and on, when going up mountains, it chugs and acts like it's going to die (we're only talking 5000-6000 feet elevation), and coming down it just revs it's way down the hills, not paying attention to the brake at all. Turn a corner and it slows down and accelerates when it decides to. Didn't install a hard cover license plate cover, had to drill screws up front. xxx. Will NEVER buy a Jeep again in this lifetime.

Too many issues

I've had problems with this Jeep since the beginning. Within the first two months my transmission went on me while I was on a highway. Then I had issues of it shutting down with no warning. That happened 3 times. Now I'm through my warranty, and I'm having even more issues. Latest problem was the radio being replaced, that was 400$, then both headlights replaced. The dealership charged me 174$ for that. I have it almost paid off and hoping to get another year or two without having to put a lot of money in it. I doubt that will happen. But one thing I do know is, I will never buy another Jeep again. The electrical work to this car is horrendous.
