2021 Jeep Cherokee Review: Reliable Midsize SUV With Some Reasonable Ownership Costs

Rating: 4.83
Based on 76 Owner Reviews โ–ถ
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is a compact SUV with a rugged history, evolving from its initial introduction in 1974. The 2021 model is part of the fifth generation (KL). Key trims include Latitude, Latitude Plus, Altitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. Pricing generally ranged from around $27,000 to $37,000 when new. The Cherokee stands out due to its off-road capabilities, particularly in the Trailhawk trim, and its distinctive Jeep styling, appealing to those seeking adventure and practicality.
The Good

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee offers a blend of performance, especially with the available V6 engine and off-road prowess (Trailhawk). It's comfortable for daily commutes. The design is distinctly Jeep, appealing emotionally. Practically, it provides decent cargo space and available safety features. However, reliability can be a concern for some buyers and fuel efficiency is not a strong point.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2021 Jeep Cherokee include its somewhat dated nine-speed automatic transmission, which can sometimes exhibit hesitant shifting. Fuel economy, especially with the V6 engine, is not class-leading. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system. Reliability can be a concern, so review repair records before purchasing. The rear cargo area is smaller compared to some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2021 Jeep Cherokee Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2021 Jeep Cherokee often revolve around the nine-speed automatic transmission. Some owners have reported harsh or delayed shifting, which can affect the driving experience. Infotainment system glitches, such as freezing or slow response times, have also been mentioned.
Recalls are always possible, and it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any active recalls related to the 2021 Cherokeeโ€™s VIN.
Long-term reliability is a concern for some. Historically, Jeep vehicles haven't always ranked highly in reliability surveys. Potential issues can include electrical problems, sensor failures, and drivetrain malfunctions. Thorough maintenance and regular servicing are crucial for mitigating these risks. Investigating the specific vehicleโ€™s history via a Carfax report or similar service can also help identify any recurring problems or major repairs. Some model years prior to 2021 had more pronounced transmission issues, so verifying that any software updates have been applied to the 2021 model is advisable. Rust can be an issue in areas with harsh winters and road salt, so inspecting the undercarriage is important.

How long will the 2021 Jeep Cherokee last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2021 Jeep Cherokee should reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, transmission servicing (especially given the 9-speed transmission), and addressing any warning lights promptly. Long-term durability concerns often revolve around the transmission, potential for electrical issues, and rust prevention. The engine itself, especially the V6, is generally robust, but neglecting maintenance can shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses can manifest as sensor failures or issues with the four-wheel-drive system over time, especially with frequent off-road use.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee comes with a decent array of tech and safety features. Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims offer an 8.4-inch touchscreen with improved functionality and navigation.
Driver-assistance features include available adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. These features are often optional or standard on upper trim levels.
Entertainment features include available premium audio systems and multiple USB ports.
Safety features include standard airbags, stability control, and a rearview camera. Optional features like park assist and rain-sensing wipers are also available.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be checked for the specific 2021 model year, as ratings can vary. Generally, the Cherokee performs well in most crash tests, although some marginal ratings in specific categories may exist. Always verify the latest safety information from these organizations before making a purchase. A well-equipped 2021 Cherokee offers a solid blend of technology and safety for its class.

2021 Jeep Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee ranged from approximately $27,000 to $37,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and location, but expect to find them ranging from $18,000 to $28,000. Depreciation is moderate for the Cherokee. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and trim level. Trailhawk models often hold their value better due to their enhanced off-road capabilities. Lower trims and those with high mileage will depreciate more significantly. The overall market demand for SUVs also influences resale prices.

2021 Jeep Cherokee Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's long-term ownership costs are moderate. Insurance costs are typical for its class. Fuel costs can be higher, particularly with the V6 engine. Maintenance costs are average, but potential repairs, especially relating to the transmission, could increase expenses. Regular servicing is crucial to prevent costly issues. Overall, it's not the most economical SUV to own, but it's not excessively expensive either. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable.

How Does the 2021 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. In terms of off-road performance, the Cherokee (especially the Trailhawk) surpasses most rivals. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road is a closer competitor. However, the RAV4 and CR-V generally offer better reliability ratings. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience on pavement.
Feature-wise, the Cherokee is competitive, though some rivals offer more advanced driver-assistance systems. Price-wise, the Cherokee is generally in line with its competitors.
Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota RAV4: For superior reliability and fuel efficiency.
  • Honda CR-V: For practicality and a spacious interior.
  • Mazda CX-5: For a more refined driving experience and stylish design.
  • Ford Escape: Offers a range of engine options, including hybrids.
If off-road capability is a priority, the Cherokee Trailhawk is a strong contender. Otherwise, the RAV4, CR-V, or CX-5 might be better choices for overall reliability and value.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is ideal for buyers who prioritize off-road capability and Jeep styling in a compact SUV. It's worth buying if you value its ruggedness and don't mind potentially lower reliability compared to some competitors. A used model can offer good value, particularly if it has a well-documented service history. The Trailhawk trim is recommended for serious off-road enthusiasts. Otherwise, the Limited or Latitude Plus trims provide a good balance of features and value. Thoroughly inspect any used Cherokee and check for transmission issues before purchasing.

I have been looking at new Jeeps for awhile was needing a new vehicle was driving a 2005 dodge grand caravan sxt drove it everywhere kid's learned how to drive in it. But I'm a jeep guy have a 1979Jeepcj7 since brand new drive it daily. Seen the jeep cherokee trailhawk at my local dealership talked to them about it took it for a test drive and fell in love with it. Had to take it home. Very comfortable all the buttons are in the right places. Display screen is very simple to navigate easy-to-use app's phone linked right up no need to look at it. Mics are in right places above head everyone I call or calls me has no problem hearing me. Has alot of safety features to get use to but not hard. I have had other cherokee in the past but love this one. If you are interested in a Jeep check out the Cherokee line like I said I'am a Jeep guy test drive and you will see what I mean.

Defective 4x4 system

Defective mechanical issuesPower Transfer Unit for the 4x4 system is known to fail since 2014 models. This item is also found on other Jeep models. When this part fails, the only replacement part available will be used on new vehicles and are not available to replace on vehicles already sold. This part has a nation wide shortage and not available. Why would anyone buy a product, pay it off just to find yourself without a vehicle when something is defective and irreplaceable? Stay away from Jeeps!!!

WARNING People who live in cold places

I love my jeep. But my biggest issue is if you live somewhere where it get cold and you don't have somewhere to park it like a garage, be warned it might not let you drive it no matter how long you let it warm up. I have had this for almost 2 years now and both winters I have had trouble with the dashboard lights coming on. Lights like collusion lights, engine, and airbag. The problem is when all these lights come on, it shuts the car off and refused to left you move or change shifts. I will admit the first time it happen, I accidently left my phone charger plug in over night. I have now made sure everything is unplug and off before I leave my jeep. But every time since, when the weather get cold and it still had this issue. I have reported this to the dealer ship I got my jeep from but they say it just the battery volt being low from the cold. But I need my vehicle to work due to my job being one where I work all years including holidays.

Jeep: Go anywhere and brings you home in style

Came out of a Ford Fusion due to lease ending. Getting older, past 70 yearsof age, and my wife thought I would benefit from an suv with a higher seating position for entry and egress. My wife had a Grand Cherokee for 16 years and loved it. I drove it many times and enjoyed the versatility of an suv. Love my รƒยขรขโ€šยฌร‹ล“21 Cherokee. The right size, great styling and image too. Power beaucoup with the V-6 engine and averaged 30 + mpg on road trip to Arizona and back. Interior is nicely appointed, the leather seating is good quality and comfortable. The Jeep handles well at all speeds and I feel safe and confident behind the wheel.
