Rating: 4.34
Based on 13 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 1995 Jeep Cherokee is a compact SUV, part of the second generation (XJ) which ran from 1984-2001. Its boxy design and off-road capabilities made it immensely popular. Key trims included the base SE, Sport, Classic, and Limited. The 1995 model stands out for its ruggedness, simplicity, and strong aftermarket support. New pricing ranged roughly from $15,000 to $25,000 depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 1995 Jeep Cherokee offers strong off-road performance and decent reliability, appealing to adventurous types. Its simple design makes maintenance relatively easy. It provides adequate comfort for its class, and its boxy design is iconic. It's a valued vehicle for its robustness and capability, resonating with those seeking practicality and off-road fun.

The Bad

The 1995 Jeep Cherokee is known for potential rust issues, particularly in areas with harsh winters. The 4.0L inline-six engine can develop oil leaks over time. The automatic transmission (if equipped) should be checked for smooth shifting. Electrical issues, while not widespread, can occur. Body damage from off-road adventures is common in used models.

What Problems Does the 1995 Jeep Cherokee Have?

The 1995 Jeep Cherokee, like many older vehicles, has some frequently reported problems. Rust is a significant concern, especially in areas where salt is used on roads. The floorboards, rocker panels, and lower body panels are particularly vulnerable. The 4.0L inline-six engine, while generally reliable, can develop oil leaks from the rear main seal, valve cover gasket, and oil filter adapter over time.
The automatic transmission (AW4) is generally robust, but maintenance is crucial, and some owners report slipping or harsh shifting with age and lack of service. The cooling system can also be a weak point, with radiator leaks and thermostat failures being relatively common.
Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning power windows or door locks, can occur, although these are usually isolated incidents. The transfer case (for 4x4 models) should be inspected for proper operation, as wear and tear can lead to issues.
Recalls for the 1995 Cherokee were mainly related to safety issues like potential fuel leakage or seatbelt problems. Check the NHTSA website for specific recall information. Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance history. Neglected Cherokees will likely require significant repairs, while well-maintained examples can last for many years.

How long will the 1995 Jeep Cherokee last?

A well-maintained 1995 Jeep Cherokee can easily exceed 200,000 miles, and some reach 300,000 or more. Years of service depend heavily on owner care; proper maintenance can extend its lifespan significantly. Long-term durability hinges on rust prevention and addressing mechanical issues promptly. Weaknesses include potential rust, oil leaks from the engine, and wear and tear on suspension components. Regular fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant) are essential for longevity. Ignoring maintenance will lead to premature failure of critical components.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 1995 Jeep Cherokee was relatively basic in terms of built-in tech compared to modern vehicles. Entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio, with optional cassette players or CD players in higher trims. There were no advanced driver-assistance features like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control.
Safety features included standard seatbelts and airbags (driver and passenger side). Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional. The Cherokee's design prioritized ruggedness over advanced safety tech.
Optional features included air conditioning, power windows and locks, cruise control, and upgraded sound systems. The Limited trim offered leather seats and other luxury touches.
Crash-test ratings from the era are limited. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted offset frontal crash tests on the Cherokee, and the results were generally marginal to poor, indicating a moderate risk of injury in a serious frontal collision. The lack of modern safety features like side airbags and electronic stability control makes the 1995 Cherokee less safe than newer vehicles. It is crucial to remember that safety standards have evolved considerably since 1995.

1995 Jeep Cherokee Prices and Market Value

The 1995 Jeep Cherokee had a new price ranging roughly from $15,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location, but generally range from $2,000 to $10,000. Low-mileage, well-maintained examples can command higher prices.
The Cherokee has depreciated substantially over time, but its resale value is bolstered by its iconic status, off-road capability, and simplicity. Factors affecting resale value include rust, mechanical condition, and the presence of desirable options (like 4WD and the 4.0L engine).

1995 Jeep Cherokee Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 1995 Jeep Cherokee are typically lower than for newer vehicles, due to its age and lower value. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the 4.0L engine and 4WD. Maintenance costs can be moderate, as parts are generally affordable and readily available. However, repairs can become frequent as the vehicle ages, potentially leading to higher long-term ownership costs. Rust repair can be expensive. It's neither very economical nor excessively costly, depending on maintenance habits and repair needs.

1995 Jeep Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 1995 Jeep Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 1995 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other Wagon?

The 1995 Jeep Cherokee competed with vehicles like the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Blazer, and Toyota 4Runner. Compared to the Explorer, the Cherokee was smaller and more nimble off-road. The Blazer offered a similar level of utility but often lacked the Cherokee's aftermarket support. The 4Runner was known for its superior reliability and build quality but typically commanded a higher price.
In terms of performance, the Cherokee's 4.0L engine was competitive, but its fuel economy lagged behind some rivals. Features were basic across the board compared to later models of its competitors. Reliability was generally good, although the 4Runner was arguably more robust. Price-wise, the Cherokee was often more affordable than the 4Runner, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
Similar alternatives include the Nissan Pathfinder of the same era, which offered a blend of off-road capability and reliability. The first-generation Honda CR-V (though smaller) might be considered for buyers prioritizing fuel efficiency and reliability over ruggedness. If off-road capability is paramount, the 4Runner is a better (albeit more expensive) choice; for general on-road use with occasional off-road excursions, the Blazer or Explorer might suffice, but their reliability isn't as solid as the Cherokee's.

Final Verdict: Is the 1995 Jeep Cherokee a Good Wagon?

The 1995 Jeep Cherokee is ideal for someone seeking an affordable and capable off-road vehicle with a simple design and strong aftermarket support. It's worth buying if you're prepared for potential maintenance and repair costs associated with an older vehicle. Look for examples with minimal rust and a documented maintenance history. The 4.0L engine is preferred for its increased power and towing capacity. A Sport or Classic trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid heavily modified or neglected examples. If reliability is your top priority, a newer vehicle might be a better choice, but the Cherokee offers a unique blend of charm and capability.

Number 1 in my book - Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0

I've owned over 230 vehicles in my life. Why would I own a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4X4, with a 4.0, straight six. Best dependable jeep for the money, hands down. CJ5's, CJ7's, and Grand Cherokee's are junk. Had a Scout that could climb with the best of them, but hard to get parts. I can't say enough about the Jeep Cherokee Sport and I've had 3 of these superb vehicles. Dependable beyond words and their resale value is astronomical.

This Jeep Was Amazing and Lasts Forever

I purchased this maeep Used and drove it for 10 years, it was still in great mechanical shape when I upgraded last year to a newer vehicle. I loved the room in it, the ease of going from 2 wd to 4wd I loved the way it handled on the road and the ease in which it would go to off roading. I used this vehicle for my main source of transportation but loved off roading in it! I had never owned a jeep before and I would definitely purchase another one, an I would recommend a thousand times over YES to this vehicle

My only love

The 4.0L straight 6 Jeep Cherokee Country is easily the best SUV of it's time. Strong, fast, reliable, comfortable, easy to work on, cheap to maintain. Yes, it has awful fuel economy, but who cares? This and the Grand Wagoneer is what made Jeep so perfect. It is the standard at which all other SUVs is compared to.

Still going strong with 226K miles on it.

Best vehicle I have ever owned. I bought mine new 20 YEARS ago and have put 226,000 miles on it to date. Took average care of it, and it's taken above average care of me. I've bought and sold several other cars/Trucks but never got rid of my Cherokee. It's still very capable off road and on. I've had people try to buy it from me several times. I've had to replace the starter, water pump and a transmission sensor and of course tires and batteries. I've opened and closed the driver's side door so many times that I had to have it welded back to the mounts. I'm going to replace the radiator, exhaust manifold and whatever part that might fail as it comes up. Oh yes, I'm taking better care of her now.

My Newly Adopted Jeep

The people here are amazing for being dealers! You know you go to look at a car and all of a sudden the dealer gets on his or her high horse and starts the "pushy talk". Not here. They just let things naturally develop and care more about your needs and what's going to suit you. They follow through the entire time you're there making sure you know all you need to know before you make your final decision - even if it means just the car you came specifically to look at. I love these guys. All of them. It's happening at Victory Honda! Thank you for everything!

Undestructable

After this Jeep reached the 10 year mark I've basically quit routine maintenance anticipating I'd need to purchase a new car soon anyway. Well that was 7 years ago and this thing just runs on the same old parts, brakes, oil, anti-freeze, transmission fluid, belts, radiator, air filter etc. It's almost freaky. I had replace the alternator in 1999. In 2000 I had the belts and hoses changed for the first and last time and also had it tuned up. Also put a setof Michelin tires on it. Since then all I've done is have the oil changed twice and had to replace the water pump, the starter and a throttle sensor. Just put the third battery in it. In all, I've spent less than $400 on repairs since 2000 when I had all the belts and hoses changed and it's first and last tune up minus the cost of the Michelins. I've had the oil changed a lube job only 3 times in 12 years and one air filter replaced. Granted the Jeep only has 112,000 miles but still. Not once has this Jeep left me stranded. Even when the water pump went out it did so slow enough to enable me to drive it almost 100 miles to reach a location where I could get it replaced. The tempature light only flashed on then off about 3 times over those 100 miles. It's like this thing is some sort of human body guard. Despite my neglect it refuses to leave me stranded. Now that I've realized what a gem it is my attitude has completely changed and I've begun to give it the loving care it deserves. One day I'll buy another vehicle but I'll never ever sell this Jeep. By never leaving me stranded, considering the way I've neglected it it would be deserved, it's kept me out of harms way for 17 years. I wouldn't take 10 times it's retail value if someone offered. These vehicles are more than just engines and sheet metal. It's as if the stars were aligned just right when these vehicles were made not a product of high tech ingenious engineering. About once every two months a stranger approaches me asking me if I'm interested in selling it, I laugh and say "NO WAY" It's literally a member of the family only more loyal and reliable. LOL

Move!

The 1995 Jeep Cherokee 2 door, 2 Wheel Drive. 5 Speed Standard...Ah what a beauty, yet what a troll sargent kind of a truck. When I am driving on the 101 freeway in California...My Jeep can do 65-75 with no trouble whatsoever. Then you look on the side of you, And you see some random guy doing everything he can to pass you, And all kinds of people are looking at you with an engine you can hear roaring from California to Vegas...These 95 Cherokees are ENGERIZER BUNNIES! and its no lie. In this truck its very easy to operate. And your in control of the car. Not some mamby pamby car with all the extra features. I don't care what the shape of an older 95 Cherokee, Good Bad, Or Horrible these things run like a soldier. I got 300,000 miles on mine and it runs like a champ! If you baby these...You have em forever. If you talk bad about them and it dont like you, You got one BIG problem on your hands! If it likes you...Nobody knows what jeep could do. The point is, Its an AWESOME truck. Dont ever get rid of one if you got one! Unless you have another Jeep. J.E.E.P, 190 Horses of pure fun and excitement!
