The Jeep Cherokee, a compact SUV, boasts a legacy of off-road capability. The 2020 model year continues this tradition with a refresh, offering a blend of comfort and ruggedness. Key trims include Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, Overland, and Trailhawk. The pricing typically ranged from approximately $26,000 to $36,000 new. Its standout feature is its genuine off-road prowess, particularly in the Trailhawk trim, setting it apart from many competitors. Its popularity stems from its Jeep heritage and versatile nature.
The Good

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee offers capable performance, especially off-road, which appeals to the adventurous. Comfort is enhanced by a smooth ride and user-friendly infotainment. The design is classically Jeep, evoking a sense of capability. While not the most efficient, it provides reasonable fuel economy. Its value lies in its blend of features and Jeep's brand appeal, satisfying both emotional and practical needs.

The Bad

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee has some known weaknesses. The 9-speed automatic transmission has been a source of complaints regarding rough shifting and hesitation. Fuel economy isn't class-leading, and the base engine can feel underpowered. Some owners have reported electrical issues. Potential buyers should carefully inspect the transmission and electrical systems before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2020 Jeep Cherokee Have?

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee, like many vehicles, has faced its share of reported problems. One of the most frequently discussed issues centers around the 9-speed automatic transmission. Owners have reported rough shifting, hesitation, and occasional slipping. While software updates have addressed some of these concerns, the issue persists for some owners. Another area of concern involves the electrical system, with reports of malfunctioning sensors, issues with the infotainment system, and occasional battery drain.

Recalls have also affected the 2020 Cherokee. It's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information specific to the vehicle's VIN. These recalls often address safety-related issues.

Long-term reliability is a mixed bag. While the engines themselves are generally considered robust, the transmission remains a potential weak point. Proper maintenance, including regular transmission fluid changes, is crucial. Additionally, keeping up with software updates can help mitigate some of the reported issues. Owners also need to be aware of potential electrical problems and address them promptly to prevent further complications. Potential buyers should obtain a thorough pre-purchase inspection to assess the vehicle's condition.

How long will the 2020 Jeep Cherokee last?

With good maintenance, a 2020 Jeep Cherokee can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent upkeep. The biggest long-term durability concern revolves around the 9-speed transmission; regular fluid changes and addressing any shifting issues promptly are critical. Electrical components can also be a source of potential problems as the vehicle ages. Neglecting scheduled maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt use, so undercarriage washing is recommended.

the car is largest enough to haul baseball equipment around, yet easy parking and handling. i like the interior and the room. the seats are very comfortable

The vehicle is perfect for me....This is my second time buying a car through Music City Autoplex and each time I have driven away completely satisfied. David Beasley has made the purchasing process seamless and smooth. There was no gimmick or trickery like most dealerships...just pure honesty and me driving away knowing that I got a great deal. I bought this red Equinox a year ago with David's assistance and this Jeep, Chocolate, two days ago, again with David's assistance. Many places prey on woman purchasers and try to force us into deals that will hurt us in the long run. Not Music City Autoplex. If you are looking for a great deal and good people to help you purchase your dream car....stop by and ask for David...let him know that me and Chocolate are getting along just fine. Happy Shopping!!!

Not a good or a reliable car you have to put oil in this car every 1000mils if you dont the car shuts off on you. They dont tell you this when you get this car

I pay to much for this Jeep. Not worth all the money I pay. It could have more luxury for the money I pay. Dealership are over charging people for these vehicles and they are not worth it.

I purchased vehicle based on above average reviews! Don't waste your money! IN ADDITION, what vehicle is designed w/o a CD player in today's autos!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee offers a decent suite of tech and safety features. Standard is a 7-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims boast an 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, which is more responsive and feature-rich. Available entertainment options include a premium audio system.

Standard driver-assistance features include a rearview camera. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and parking sensors. These systems enhance safety and convenience.

Safety is a priority. The 2020 Jeep Cherokee was crash-tested by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). NHTSA gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS ratings vary depending on the specific test, so consulting their website for the latest information is recommended. Note that the small overlap front test often presents challenges for many vehicles, and the Cherokee's performance in this test should be reviewed. The availability and effectiveness of the optional safety features contribute significantly to overall safety.

How Does the 2020 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other Minivan?

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. In terms of off-road performance, the Cherokee, especially the Trailhawk trim, surpasses most rivals. The RAV4 offers a more rugged appearance and available hybrid powertrain, while the CR-V is known for its reliability and spacious interior. The Mazda CX-5 excels in driving dynamics and interior refinement. The Ford Escape offers a range of engine options and modern technology.

The Cherokee's reliability is a point of concern compared to the RAV4 and CR-V. Feature-wise, it generally matches the competition, though some rivals offer more advanced safety features. Prices are competitive.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota RAV4: For superior reliability and resale value.
  • Honda CR-V: For a spacious interior and a comfortable ride.
  • Mazda CX-5: For a more engaging driving experience and upscale interior.
  • Ford Escape: For a wider range of engine choices and tech.
If off-roading isn't a priority, the RAV4 or CR-V might be better choices due to their stronger reliability records. If driving enjoyment is key, the CX-5 is a good alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Jeep Cherokee a Good Minivan?

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee is ideal for those who prioritize off-road capability in a compact SUV. It's worth buying if you need a vehicle that can handle light trails and adverse weather conditions. A used 2020 Cherokee can be a good value, but a thorough inspection is crucial, especially focusing on the transmission. The Trailhawk trim is recommended for serious off-road enthusiasts. If reliability is your top concern, consider alternatives like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V. Overall, the Cherokee offers a unique blend of Jeep heritage and practicality, but careful consideration of its potential weaknesses is essential.

G.I. issued

It's a good car!...haven't had it that long to give it a fair rating though. The power transfer unit (ptu) did need to be replaced not long after I bought..there was a big recall of these in 15 - 17s...but the shop called Chrysler to take care of it...I'll see...? But anyway..it's a decent ride..decent mpg..interior is good...it's a jeep!
