2015 Jeep Cherokee Review: A Comfortable SUV With Questionable Reliability

Rating: 4.52
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2015 Jeep Cherokee marked a significant redesign for the compact SUV, reviving a classic nameplate. Its distinctive styling and improved on-road manners set it apart. Available in a four-door SUV body style, key trims included Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited. New prices ranged from around $23,000 to $30,000, but used models can be found for considerably less. It's popular for its off-road capability (especially the Trailhawk), comfortable interior, and distinctive styling.
The Good

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee offers a blend of practicality and appeal. Its advantages include decent fuel economy (especially with the 4-cylinder engine), a comfortable ride, and available 4x4 capability for off-road adventures (emotional). It also provides a user-friendly infotainment system, a spacious interior for its class, and solid value in the used car market (practical).

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee include the sometimes-sluggish 9-speed automatic transmission, which has been known for rough shifting and reliability issues. Some owners have reported electrical problems and build quality concerns. The base 4-cylinder engine can feel underpowered when fully loaded. Research transmission issues before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2015 Jeep Cherokee Have?

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee has faced its share of reported problems. The most frequent complaints revolve around the 9-speed automatic transmission. Issues include rough shifting, hesitation, and complete transmission failure. Some owners have also reported experiencing the transmission "slipping" or getting stuck in certain gears. There have been recalls related to the transmission software and potential for the transmission to shift into neutral unexpectedly.
Other common issues include electrical problems, such as malfunctioning power windows and door locks. Some owners have reported issues with the Uconnect infotainment system, including freezing and connectivity problems. Premature wear of brake components has also been reported. Engine issues, while less common, have occurred, including oil consumption and cylinder misfires.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly regarding the transmission. Before purchasing a 2015 Cherokee, it's crucial to check the vehicle's history for any transmission-related repairs or recalls. Thoroughly test drive the vehicle to assess transmission performance. Pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2015 Jeep Cherokee last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Jeep Cherokee can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance, especially transmission fluid changes. The 9-speed transmission remains the biggest long-term durability concern. Owners who diligently maintain their Cherokees and address issues promptly are more likely to achieve higher mileage. Rust can also become a factor in colder climates with road salt. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan.

I bought my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4WD in January 2017 as a slightly water damaged vehicle with 18000 miles on it and have been pleasantly surprised at how reliable it's been! It's now at 66,000 miles and still working perfect in any kind of weather. Decent gas mileage, hauls anything I've put in it, gone from PA to Florida twice, Tennessee 3 times, and Myrtle Beach twice. I paid 10800 bucks for it in 2017 and I figure after 6 years of use and multiple trips ~ it's paid for itself already. The key is keeping proper maintenance!

I purchased my Jeep Cherokee in 2015; still going strong. I am up to 133, 000 miles. It is a great car, not alot of issue and handles the road well. I will keep it a while longer.

I've had the Cherokee Trailhawk since October 2015. It's a dealer demo. The comfort, ride and capabilities for off-road and in-town operation are still top-of-the-class. Mileage is almost 67,000. The original tires were replaced at 65,000 miles. Self-parking, much like adaptive cruise control, is great once you learn it. A nice ride and a great drive!

My Jeep is under 37k miles and it has already had the transmission replaced at 19k miles, a busted heating hose at 34k miles and just recently at 36.5k miles I'm having to replace the coolant thermostat. Love this Jeep but I would not buy it again.

The car looked great and drove great for a little over a year after purchase. Then the problems began. A constant issue with the sensor array, the transmission started under performing and lastly the windshield began cracking until it is spider webbing. I used to love Jeep products.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard on most trims is the Uconnect infotainment system, which includes a 5-inch touchscreen (upgradable to an 8.4-inch screen). Uconnect provides access to audio controls, smartphone integration (via Bluetooth), and available navigation. Entertainment features include a standard six-speaker audio system, with options for premium audio upgrades.
Driver-assistance features available (depending on trim and options) include: blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. A rearview camera was also available.
Safety features include: multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control. The 2015 Jeep Cherokee received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. The NHTSA gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. The Trailhawk trim had some limitations due to its different front fascia affecting crash performance, according to some reports.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Jeep Cherokee ranged from approximately $23,000 for the base Sport model to around $30,000 or more for the fully-equipped Limited or Trailhawk trims. Currently, used market prices can range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Cherokee has experienced significant depreciation. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, accident history, and whether it has desirable options like 4x4 or the V6 engine. Models with documented maintenance records tend to command higher prices. Transmission issues can negatively impact resale value.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee's ownership costs can be moderate. Insurance premiums are generally average for its class. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice and driving habits. The 4-cylinder is more economical than the V6. Maintenance costs are typical, but potential transmission repairs can significantly increase long-term costs. Due to the potential for expensive repairs, especially related to the transmission, the 2015 Cherokee isn't necessarily the most economical vehicle to own long-term. Budget for potential repairs.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Jeep Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of off-road performance, the Cherokee (especially the Trailhawk) stands out, surpassing most rivals. However, the RAV4 and CR-V generally offer superior reliability. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience. The Ford Escape offers a range of powerful engine options.
In terms of features, the Cherokee is competitive, but the RAV4 and CR-V often offer more advanced safety features. The Cherokee's pricing is generally in line with its rivals. Given reliability concerns, consider a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V for better peace of mind. If off-road capability isn't a priority, these alternatives offer a more dependable and potentially longer-lasting ownership experience. If you value driving dynamics, the Mazda CX-5 is a strong contender. The Subaru Forester offers standard all-wheel drive and good safety ratings as well.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Jeep Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee is ideal for individuals or families who prioritize off-road capability and distinctive styling in a compact SUV. It's worth considering if you find a well-maintained example with documented service history, particularly regarding the transmission. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. The Trailhawk trim is best for serious off-roaders. Due to potential reliability concerns, especially with the transmission, it's wise to weigh the risks against the vehicle's strengths. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V.

Purchased new in 2015.

Purchased new in 2015. Have only done 1 repair in 129k, which was fixing oil leak at oil filter housing. Solid car, great in rain and snow. Thoroughly enjoy this car

Check recalls on 2015 Jeep Cherokee sport's transm

I've only had my Jeep Cherokee sport for 2 weeks now and for the most part, everything is great. I am a little concerned with the transmission however. I've noticed that when I barely tap the gas and then hit the break, The vehicle will jump forward. I've been lucky so far where nobody has been in front of me for me to hit them. The second time it happened I came very close to rear ending another vehicle

Cherokee capable

Overall very capable vehicle. 3.2L with 4wd/factory trailer tow. Silly things show up like the service 4wd light that comes/goes and radio/controller that resets after replacement. Solid car with a good pedigree.

A good 4WD for me!

Win win

I purchased my Jeep Cherokee in 2015; still going strong. I am up to 133, 000 miles. It is a great car, not alot of issue and handles the road well. I will keep it a while longer.

I love it!!!

I have owned this car since 2015. I bought it new and I love it. I never had an SUV until I bought this one. My husband owns a Wrangler and a Grand Cherokee. This vehicle handles well, it feels nimble and quick. The interior is nice. I finally had to fix a part which I guess is common on these. It was an overflow oil part, but I can't complain. I drive a lot for work through snow and bad weather in New England. I have driven in this to Vermont, Maine, NH, NY and Massachusetts. I live in RI. I now have around 105K and I think my next vehicle will be this same model. I really enjoy driving my Cherokee Trailhawk.

Don't

Sluggish acceleration despite turbo charged engine. Mediocre reliability. Poor money value due to underwhelming performance in my opinion. Excellent exterior styling, however. Would absolutely not recommend this vehicle for any purpose.

Comfortable, reliable good gas mileage.

I purchased this car new in 2015. I have enjoyed the quiet drive and the excellent radio. I have the Convenience package which has all the extra's that I like. The vehicle has been very reliable, fuel economy is OK in the city about 22, but on the highway with just me in the car I averaged over 30 MPG.

Great looking SUV

This is my second Jeep, my first was a 2008 2door Wrangler absolutely awesome. This 2015 Cherokee looks great inside and out. Great interior design, easy to navigate through your options while driving. The exterior design is as well done as the interior. Fuel economy is good, plenty of aftermarket accessories available. Love the modified Jeep grill, modern yet recognizable. I have been very happy with this Cherokee so far and don't see that changing any time soon.
