The 2013 Dodge Durango is a three-row SUV known for its blend of truck-like capability and car-like comfort. It falls into the mid-size SUV category. Key trims include the SXT, Crew, R/T, and Citadel. Originally introduced in 1998, this generation ran from 2011-2020. New, its price ranged approximately from $30,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. The Durango stands out due to its muscular styling, available V8 engine, and impressive towing capacity, making it popular for families who need space and capability.
The Good

The 2013 Dodge Durango offers a powerful performance, especially with the available V8, appealing to emotional buyers seeking a fun-to-drive SUV. Practically, it provides ample passenger and cargo space, a comfortable ride, and decent reliability for its class. Its bold design and comfortable interior enhance its appeal. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers a good value for its capabilities.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2013 Dodge Durango include its fuel economy, especially with the V8 engine. Some owners have reported electrical issues, including problems with the Uconnect system. Also, the rear-wheel-drive models can struggle in snowy conditions. Watch out for potential issues with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module). What Problems Does the 2013 Dodge Durango Have?

The 2013 Dodge Durango has some frequently reported problems, primarily revolving around electrical issues and the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module). Problems with the TIPM can cause a variety of issues, including stalling, failure to start, and problems with the fuel pump. Several recalls were issued for the 2011-2013 Durango models related to the TIPM, wiring harness chafing, and brake booster corrosion.
Long-term reliability concerns often relate to the Uconnect infotainment system, which can experience glitches and freezing. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system and premature wear of suspension components. Specific to the 2013 model, there have been reports of the rear liftgate struts failing prematurely. Preventative maintenance, especially regarding fluid changes and electrical system checks, is crucial to mitigate potential problems. It is recommended to thoroughly inspect the vehicle's service history and address any outstanding recalls before purchasing a used 2013 Durango. Rust can also be a concern in regions with heavy road salt use.

How long will the 2013 Dodge Durango last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Dodge Durango can provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Average mileage depends heavily on driving habits and preventative maintenance. Good maintenance can significantly extend its lifespan. Weaknesses over time include potential rust in areas with road salt, electrical component failures (especially related to the TIPM and Uconnect), and wear on suspension components. Regular fluid changes, timely repairs, and addressing issues promptly are crucial for long-term durability. Neglecting maintenance can lead to premature breakdowns and costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Dodge Durango offered a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a six-speaker audio system, tri-zone automatic climate control, and keyless entry. Higher trims like the Crew and Citadel added an 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and remote start. Optional features included navigation, a premium audio system, a sunroof, and rear-seat entertainment system with DVD player.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles but available options included rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring. Safety features included standard stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and multiple airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally positive. The 2013 Durango received an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Durango good ratings in several crash tests. However, it's important to check specific ratings for the model year and trim level, as they can vary. The availability of safety features depended heavily on the trim level and optional packages chosen at the time of purchase. The Citadel trim offered the most comprehensive suite of safety technologies available.

2013 Dodge Durango Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Dodge Durango ranged from approximately $30,000 for the base SXT trim to $45,000 for the fully loaded Citadel. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on the trim, mileage, condition, and location. The Durango has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and higher running costs compared to more fuel-efficient SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and whether it has the preferred V8 engine. Models with lower mileage and a clean accident history command higher prices.

2013 Dodge Durango Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Dodge Durango is generally considered more costly to own than some of its rivals. Insurance costs are moderate, but fuel costs, especially with the V8, can be significant. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential electrical issues and the complexity of some components. Long-term ownership requires diligent maintenance to avoid costly repairs. Overall, it's not the most economical choice, particularly when considering fuel consumption and potential repair bills.

2013 Dodge Durango Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Dodge Durango is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Dodge Durango Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Dodge Durango competes with SUVs like the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, and Honda Pilot. In terms of performance, the Durango, particularly with the V8, offers a more powerful and engaging driving experience than many of its competitors. However, the Highlander and Pilot tend to be more reliable. The Traverse offers more cargo space, while the Explorer focuses on a blend of fuel economy and features.

Feature-wise, the Durango is competitive, offering a good range of tech and comfort options. However, some rivals offered more advanced safety features at the time. The Durango's price point was generally similar to its rivals when new, but depreciation has made used models more affordable.

Alternatives to the 2013 Durango include:
  • **Toyota Highlander:** For superior reliability and resale value.
  • **Honda Pilot:** For a practical and fuel-efficient family SUV.
  • **Ford Explorer:** For a blend of features and fuel economy.
  • **Chevrolet Traverse:** For maximum cargo space.
For someone prioritizing performance and towing capacity on a budget, the Durango is a decent option. However, for those seeking ultimate reliability and lower running costs, the Highlander or Pilot might be better choices.

The 2013 Dodge Durango is ideal for buyers who need a capable SUV with good towing capacity and don't mind sacrificing some fuel economy. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you prioritize performance and space over long-term reliability and are willing to keep up with regular maintenance. The R/T trim offers a sporty driving experience, while the Citadel provides more luxury features. However, it's essential to get a pre-purchase inspection to check for potential issues, especially regarding the TIPM and electrical system. Consider models with well-documented service history and no outstanding recalls. If reliability is paramount, explore alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot.

In 2020, I purchased my 2013 durango citadel used with 94k on it. It still had the window sticker folded in the glove compartment, it was somebody's baby! (Or so I thought..) They upgraded to rear captain seats, entertainment package, towing package, mopar running boards, awd, all the options! It looked great! First issue, LOUD buzzing coming from the windshield area when going fast. The black plastic at the bottom is warped and let's air through, and the seal around the windshield flaps. Fast. So loud! That was corrected. Next issue, the video tape on the inside of the drop down movie screen for the back went bad, kept showing a black screen, and needed replaced. Next issue, someone put a cheap battery in the car that couldn't keep up with all of the electrical upgrades, fried the computer, had to replace the computer, battery, and alternator. Next issue, check engine lights for evap system. Had to replace a canister and some other thing associated with that code. Next issue, being AWD, some type of sensor or electrical part was glitching out and causing my car to go into LOW gear by itself! And it would stay in low gear until it was ready to come out. Final issue, a gasket around the back door hinge is not sealed properly and will allow water to leak inside when it rains or going thru a car wash. Man oh man. This car has costed me so much money in the short time I have had it. I will not be buying another dodge after this.

Most reliable AMERICAN made car I've ever owned

I put 100,000 miles on this car (117K total). This 6 seater car has given me very little problems. Besides replacing tires and brakes a few times and keeping up on my daily oil changes, the only other problems I've had with this car was the replacement of the transmission radiator and radiator. There were also a few recalls on their fuel pump relay switch. Other than that, no engine problems or interior/exterior cosmetics. I highly recommend this vehicle. Especially people with children.

Smoothest ride I've ever owned

Leg room is no problem at all, more grip than you would expect from an SUV, great stock speakers, no mechanical issues, great car overall

Great mid-full size SUV for the money

We leased our 2013 Durango V8. It was our first and only lease so far. At the time, gas was relatively expensive, so they had a great deal on V8 leases. The V8 was not impressive. It was bigger and had to haul more weight than our Toyota 4Runner V8. But, it was more efficient. However, it didn't deliver any improvement in performance. I was expecting the 375 HP to be much quicker. It wasn't. It was also Sounded unrefined and coarse. However, the car did handle well in the corner and on the HW. And it was fairly quiet. Our version had the captains seats in the middle row that reduced seat count to 6. If I had to do it again, I would absolutely choose the regular bench seat and have room for 7. That way, we could have the in-laws and the kids (6total) onboard while still being able to fold down one of the third row seats for luggage. As it was, with 6 onboard, luggage space was tight, and on vacations, people had to have some bags in their lap. Dodge also introduced an 8 speed auto a couple years later that improved acceleration as well as fuel economy. I wouldn't mind buying a used version of that.

Great car! Especially for the money!

I've only had one problem in which I had to change the oil pressure sensor. It wasn't a big deal. Reliable and is just a great car all around!

Very reliable and fun to drive

This car is perfect for a family who likes going on trips. It is very comfortable and has plenty of safety features that makes me feel comfortable driving. It is also very strong with the 5.7L V8 engine that allows us to tow. I also like the fact that it has a dipstick on the transmission which allows me to check the level and perform the service instead of taking to a dealer.

My first car

Our family needed a second car and I saw this dodge Durango on their website and I was set on getting it. It's reliable and comes in handy when our family car needs work done.

The Hemi engine is amazing for power!

Although I have had many Jeeps, this is the first Dodge I have owned. I was very surprised by the leg room, the ride is awesome, and the 3rd row seating worked great for the grandkids. The biggest surprise was the transmission. It has a low range just like the Jeep. ( Dodge & Jeep are made by the same Co. ) Also has the tow package & the Hemi engine. Actually bought it to pull a travel trailer but never bought one.
