The 2011 Dodge Durango marked a significant redesign, moving to a unibody construction and a more refined image. This three-row SUV offered seating for up to seven passengers. Key trims included the Express, Crew, R/T, and Citadel. New pricing ranged from approximately $29,000 to $43,000. It stood out for its bold styling, powerful engine options, and car-like handling, appealing to those who wanted SUV practicality with a performance edge. The design and available V8 made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2011 Durango offered strong performance, especially with the V8 engine, and a comfortable ride. Its distinctive design appealed to emotional buyers, while the spacious interior and towing capability attracted practical buyers. The value proposition was good considering its features, though fuel efficiency wasn't its strongest suit. Handling was surprisingly nimble for its size.

The Bad

Some owners have reported problems with the suspension and drivetrain. Watch out for excessive wear on brake components due to the vehicle's weight and towing capacity.

What Problems Does the 2011 Dodge Durango Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2011 Dodge Durango often revolve around the electrical system, particularly the Uconnect infotainment system experiencing glitches, freezing, or failing to connect properly. Some owners have noted issues with the climate control system, including inconsistent temperatures or complete failure. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or slipping, have also been reported, especially at higher mileages. Suspension components, specifically the shocks and struts, may wear out prematurely due to the vehicle's weight. There have been recalls related to the fuel system, specifically concerning fuel leaks that could increase the risk of fire. Long-term reliability concerns center around the lifespan of the electronic components and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. Some owners have also reported issues with the exhaust manifold bolts breaking, leading to exhaust leaks. Before purchasing, checking the vehicle history for any recalls or service records related to these common problems is highly recommended. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are also advisable.

How long will the 2011 Dodge Durango last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2011 Dodge Durango can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Regular oil changes, transmission services, and timely replacement of wear items are crucial. Long-term durability depends heavily on driving habits. Weaknesses often surface in the electrical system and drivetrain components as the vehicle ages. The suspension may also require more frequent attention. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the lifespan, while proactive care can extend it considerably. Rust can also be a factor in areas with harsh winters.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Dodge Durango offered a decent suite of technology and safety features for its time. Standard tech included a basic audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims featured the Uconnect infotainment system with a touchscreen display, navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity. Entertainment options included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with screens mounted on the headrests. Driver-assistance features were limited but included available features like a rearview camera and parking sensors.

Safety features included standard antilock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain). Optional safety features, depending on the trim, could include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-path detection.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally positive. The Durango received a four-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the Durango a "Good" rating in several crash tests. Some results may vary depending on specific testing criteria and model variations.

2011 Dodge Durango Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Dodge Durango ranged from around $29,000 for the base model to $43,000 for the top-tier Citadel trim. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim level, typically ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. The Durango has depreciated considerably due to its age and higher running costs compared to more fuel-efficient rivals. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident-free status, and the desirability of specific features like the V8 engine or upgraded technology packages. Higher mileage and any signs of neglect negatively impact the price.

2011 Dodge Durango Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Dodge Durango is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs can be moderate to high depending on coverage and driver history. Fuel costs, especially with the V8, are significant. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the vehicle's complexity and potential for electrical or mechanical issues. Long-term ownership costs can escalate as the vehicle ages, requiring more frequent repairs. It's not the most economical choice, particularly for budget-conscious buyers.

2011 Dodge Durango Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Dodge Durango is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Dodge Durango Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2011 Dodge Durango competed with SUVs like the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, and Honda Pilot. In terms of performance, the Durango, especially with the V8, offered more power than the Pilot and Traverse but was similar to the Explorer's available V6. Feature-wise, the Durango was competitive, offering similar tech and comfort features. However, the Honda Pilot and Chevrolet Traverse generally had better reliability reputations. Pricewise, the Durango was often similarly priced to its rivals when new, but used prices may be more attractive.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Honda Pilot: More reliable and fuel-efficient.
  • Chevrolet Traverse: More spacious third row and cargo area.
  • Ford Explorer: More modern styling and available features (especially in later model years).
  • Toyota Highlander: Known for its reliability and resale value.

If reliability is a top priority, the Pilot or Highlander might be better choices. If you need maximum space, the Traverse is a strong contender. If performance and bolder styling are key, the Durango remains a compelling option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Dodge Durango a Good Vehicle?

The 2011 Dodge Durango is ideal for those who prioritize performance and bold styling in a three-row SUV and are willing to accept potential trade-offs in fuel economy and reliability. It's worth buying used if you find one in good condition with a well-documented maintenance history and at a competitive price. The R/T trim is appealing for performance enthusiasts, while the Crew or Citadel trims offer more comfort and convenience features. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial to identify any potential issues. Be prepared for potentially higher running costs compared to more fuel-efficient and reliable alternatives. Consider a newer model if reliability is a top concern.

For starters I bought this car as a salvage title from a one owner off of Facebook market. First year the car ran like a CHAMP I was proud no complaints. After the year, things started getting worse. Started to get water inside the cabin, in the BATTERY component (that's located under the passenger seat) I'm not talking about a splash of water I'm talking about take a dip in the water! I'm at my wits end and I'm thinking about getting rid of durning tax time and let it be someone else's problem. This girl is over it!

Dodge Durango

Had the Durango in the shop of the water pump, I haven't had to many issues with the vehicle since I purchased it in 2011 brand new. The main problem that I dislike is the transmission of the first year if the third generation, and a few design changes that were made. But the changes in transmission and design weren't that much of a difference to purchase a new one. I really enjoy the Durango.

Reliable, Spacious Family vehicle

After test-driving many SUV's, the Durango stole our hearts - spacious leg and head room, comfortable (heated/cooling) seats, and a smooth and quiet drive. I'd recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a solid family SUV.

Love my Durango

The Durango has tons of versatile space. I own the Crew version with towing package. It's great looking, comfortable, and reliable. Best vehicle I have ever owned. Bought the 2011 in 2013, still works perfect and looks great. When I do trade in, it will be for another Durango.

Family Car

Met all my needs. A good family car because of the amount of space the car has. Seats 8 people. All backseats can go down for a larger trunk. Great on gas, use it for work commute and some social events but usually only need to get gas around every 2 weeks.
