Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Dodge Durango is a three-row SUV known for its muscular styling and impressive performance. It emerged as a capable alternative to traditional minivans and larger SUVs. Key trims include SXT, Rallye, Limited, Citadel, and R/T. New, it ranged roughly from $30,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. The Durango's unique blend of truck-like capability, comfortable interior, and distinctive Dodge styling makes it popular among families seeking both practicality and attitude.
The Good

The 2014 Durango offers powerful performance, especially with the V8 engine, and a comfortable ride. Its bold design appeals to emotional buyers, while the spacious interior and available all-wheel drive cater to practical needs. Reliability is decent, and the value proposition is strong compared to some competitors. The well-appointed interior adds to the comfort, making it suitable for long trips.

The Bad

Some 2014 Durangos have experienced issues with the electrical system, including the Uconnect infotainment system. Fuel economy, particularly with the V8, is not a strong point. Potential buyers should also inspect the vehicle for any signs of transmission problems and thoroughly check all electronic features. Premature wear on brake components has also been reported.

What Problems Does the 2014 Dodge Durango Have?

The 2014 Dodge Durango has seen its share of reported issues. One common concern revolves around the Uconnect infotainment system, with owners reporting glitches, freezing, and unresponsive touchscreens. Some drivers have noted electrical problems, including issues with the power liftgate and malfunctioning sensors. Transmission problems, such as rough shifting or slipping, have also been reported, although less frequently.
Recalls have been issued for various issues, including problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and airbag deployment. Potential buyers should check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with higher mileage examples. Owners should pay close attention to the vehicle's maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic. Issues related to the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) have been reported in Durangos from this era, which can cause a variety of electrical problems. Addressing any of these issues can be costly, so thorough due diligence is crucial.

How long will the 2014 Dodge Durango last?

A well-maintained 2014 Dodge Durango can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Regular oil changes, timely servicing of the transmission, and proactive maintenance of the cooling system are crucial. Durability is generally good, but weaknesses include potential electrical issues and wear on suspension components over time. Rust can be a concern in colder climates where road salt is used. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the lifespan of the vehicle. The Uconnect system may become outdated over time, requiring updates or replacement.
Positive Owner Reviews
JD
I really LOVE my new (used) car. We bought this vehicle so we can tow a travel trailer behind it. This will work perfectly for that.
Ron McC
The largest vehicle I've owned. It has more than enough room for me and my family to go on vacation or just to go to the park. I love it.
Durango
This SUV exceeded our expectations It was fun to drive on long road trips or daily commuting It's pretty to look at and nice once inside
Negative Owner Reviews
IHATEMYDODGE
We have had so many problems with this car. The ringing has broken so many times, and when it does, it sounds like a lawnmower. Thank goodness for the lifetime warranty or else we would be broke from all the money we would have to spend on it. We take a lot of road trips and it is very uncomfortable! There are also a lot of cosmetic problems in the interior. Things are always coming kisses or falling apart. A very unreliable car!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Dodge Durango boasts a range of tech and safety features. Standard features include a 5-inch touchscreen (upgraded to an 8.4-inch screen on higher trims), Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera (on Limited and above). The Uconnect infotainment system offers user-friendly navigation and entertainment options. Optional features include a premium audio system (Alpine or Beats by Dr. Dre), a rear-seat entertainment system with Blu-ray player, and a sunroof.
Driver-assistance features vary by trim level. Available features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning. These features enhance safety and driver confidence.
The 2014 Durango received good crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It earned a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. Safety features include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and multiple airbags.

2014 Dodge Durango Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Dodge Durango ranged from approximately $30,000 for the base SXT trim to around $45,000 for the top-tier Citadel or R/T models. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $20,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation is significant, as with most vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and trim level. V8-powered models and those with all-wheel drive tend to hold their value slightly better. High mileage and accident history will negatively impact resale value.

2014 Dodge Durango Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Dodge Durango is moderately costly to own. Insurance rates are average for its class. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engine. Maintenance is generally standard, but repairs can be expensive, particularly for electrical or transmission issues. Long-term ownership costs can be higher than some competitors due to potential reliability concerns and fuel consumption. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable. Regular maintenance is key to minimizing long-term expenses.

2014 Dodge Durango Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Dodge Durango is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Dodge Durango Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Dodge Durango competes with SUVs like the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, and Honda Pilot. The Durango stands out with its bold styling and powerful engine options, especially the V8. Performance-wise, it often surpasses the Highlander and Pilot, but fuel economy suffers. The Explorer offers a similar blend of performance and features.
In terms of reliability, the Toyota Highlander generally scores higher than the Durango. The Chevrolet Traverse offers more cargo space but may lack the Durango's sporty driving dynamics. The Honda Pilot is known for its practicality and reliability.
For those prioritizing reliability and fuel economy, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot are better alternatives. If performance and styling are paramount, the Durango remains a strong contender. The Ford Explorer offers a similar balance of features and performance, making it a worthy alternative. Consider the Mazda CX-9 for a more refined driving experience, although it's smaller than the Durango. Prices are generally comparable across these models, depending on trim and condition.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Dodge Durango a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Dodge Durango is ideal for families needing a three-row SUV with bold styling and available V8 power. It's worth buying if you prioritize performance and aren't overly concerned about fuel economy. Opting for the Limited or Citadel trims provides a good balance of features and value. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential, particularly checking for electrical and transmission issues. A well-maintained Durango can offer years of reliable service, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs compared to some competitors. Consider a newer model year if reliability is a primary concern.

Dodge durango

The Durango drive ability is very good, power is very adequate. But the cam shafts developed a ridge which caused a loud ticking noise. They had to be replaced. This was an expensive undertaking. In a low mileage vehicles. Dodge should pay me for my expenses.

Happy Camper!

I really LOVE my new (used) car. We bought this vehicle so we can tow a travel trailer behind it. This will work perfectly for that.

Most up to date and reliable vehicle I've owned

The largest vehicle I've owned. It has more than enough room for me and my family to go on vacation or just to go to the park. I love it.

Good vehicle with some design flaws

Great vehicle with everything you could ask for. The design flaws come from the rear track light allowing water in and causing light to go out and an expensive replacement. Engine has the two popular issues with hemi model. Had to replace exhaust manifold on mine.

Perfect family SUV

I purchased new and have had for 6 years. Only one mechanics issue at 80,000 miles. Other than that oil changes and new tires have been my only expense. Could not say enough great things about the Durango.

At 55,000 Miles it has been very good

I like this car very much. A couple of minor problems in 50,000 miles (a radiator leak which might have been from a rock bouncing up, and a thermostat replacement (under warranty), but overall, the V6 with the 8 speed transmission is very smooth and has been more than adequate including pulling a small trailer. The UConnect system is very intuitive and easy to use.
