The 2012 Dodge Durango is a mid-size SUV that blends truck-like capability with car-like comfort. Part of the Durango's third generation (2011-2024), it boasts a rugged yet refined design. Key trims include SXT, Crew, R/T, and Citadel. Its popularity stems from its powerful engine options, ample passenger and cargo space, and distinctive styling. New, prices ranged roughly from $29,000 to $45,000 depending on trim and options.
The Good

The 2012 Durango offers strong performance, especially with the V8, appealing to those seeking power. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior cater to families. The bold design makes an emotional statement, while its respectable towing capacity and available all-wheel drive fulfill practical needs. Overall, it provides a compelling blend of utility and style.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 Durango include lower fuel economy compared to some competitors, especially with the V8. What Problems Does the 2012 Dodge Durango Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Dodge Durango often revolve around electrical issues, particularly with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module). This module controls various electrical functions, and failures can lead to starting problems, stalling, and issues with lights and accessories. Some owners have also reported transmission problems, ranging from rough shifting to complete failure, although this isn't as widespread as the TIPM issue.
Recalls for the 2012 Durango have addressed issues such as faulty fuel pump relays (potentially causing stalling), brake booster problems (reducing braking performance), and issues with the cruise control system. Checking the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) is crucial to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability can be a concern if regular maintenance is neglected. The 5.7L Hemi V8, while powerful, requires diligent oil changes to prevent sludge buildup. Suspension components may also wear out over time, especially with frequent towing or rough road use. It's important to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential problems before buying a used 2012 Durango.

How long will the 2012 Dodge Durango last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Dodge Durango can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Regular oil changes (especially for the Hemi V8), transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system services are crucial for longevity. Many owners report exceeding 10 years of service. However, long-term durability can be affected by factors like driving habits and climate. Weaknesses over time may include suspension component wear, potential electrical issues (TIPM), and eventual engine or transmission repairs. Rust can also be a factor in colder climates where road salt is used.

The wife likes the design so that's what she got. She loves everything about this car. It now has 193,000 miles. At 175,000 it had check engine light and loss of power, took to dealer they said needed plugs wires etc. IT was better but still bad took to a mechanic and he found the head gasket blown and a recall. Took to a different dealer and it's all better. Our only complaint is no take off power with the AC running.

This car have met all my needs so far, it is definitely a big upgrade for me, its a vehicle that I can make my own and is looking to have for awhile..
Wendy
I have compared to other similar makes and the Durango far exceeded my expectations. I knew I was buying a nice car but once I drove it I was hooked. It has great leg space in all 3 rows. Its stable on the road and is just a perfect car. I couldn't have wished for better.
Negative Owner Reviews
JeffS
This car is the biggest piece of xxxx i have ever owned. I have spent more on repairing it than i have paying for it. we bought it for 14,000 with 40k on it and now we have spent more than that on front end drive train, transmission, and now starter and leaking oil cooler. Stay away from Dodge, run as fast as you can. We have had to have it towed 3 times and every time the tow drivers said the most towed vehicle is a Dodge
James Vien
My 2012 dodge Durango is a piece of crap and still owe $17000 for a vehicle i cant drive because i got sold a LEMON
Clinic Eye
It's heavy, not to stylish and too much gasoline. If you just want a vehicle to transport your family o a big group. This is a vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Dodge Durango offers a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time.
Tech and Entertainment: The base SXT trim features a basic Uconnect 130 system with AM/FM radio and a CD player. Higher trims like the Crew and R/T upgrade to Uconnect 430 with a touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and available navigation. The Citadel trim offers a premium audio system and advanced features. Rear-seat entertainment systems with DVD players were also optional.
Driver-Assistance: Standard driver-assistance features are limited to electronic stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Higher trims offer optional features such as a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring were not available on the 2012 model.

2012 Dodge Durango Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Dodge Durango ranged in price from approximately $29,000 for the base SXT to around $45,000 for a fully loaded Citadel. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Durango has depreciated significantly, reflecting its age and potential for higher maintenance costs. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (accident history, mechanical issues), trim level (Citadel and R/T hold value better), and geographic location (demand for SUVs). V8 models may command a slight premium.

2012 Dodge Durango Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Dodge Durango is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel economy, particularly with the V8, is below average, increasing fuel expenses. Maintenance costs can be average to slightly above average, but potential TIPM and transmission issues can lead to higher repair bills. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance and repair needs. It's not the most economical choice, but it offers capability and space that justify the costs for some buyers.

2012 Dodge Durango Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Dodge Durango is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Dodge Durango Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2012 Dodge Durango competes with the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot. In terms of performance, the Durango with the V8 engine often surpasses competitors like the Highlander and Pilot in towing capacity and acceleration. The Explorer offers similar performance with its EcoBoost engine. Feature-wise, the Durango is comparable, although the Traverse offers more cargo space. However, the Durango lags behind the Highlander and Pilot in terms of long-term reliability.
Price-wise, the Durango is generally competitive with its rivals in the used market. The Highlander and Pilot tend to hold their value better due to their reputation for reliability. The Explorer offers a more modern interior and available tech features, while the Traverse provides greater passenger and cargo volume.
Alternatives: If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot are better choices, though they may not offer the same level of performance or towing capacity. If cargo space is paramount, the Chevrolet Traverse is a strong contender. The Ford Explorer provides a blend of performance and modern features. Each alternative presents trade-offs depending on individual needs and priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Dodge Durango a Good Vehicle?

The 2012 Dodge Durango is ideal for families needing a capable SUV with strong towing ability and a bold design. It's worth buying used if a V8 engine and towing capacity are essential and the price is right. Prioritize models with a comprehensive service history, especially regarding transmission and TIPM maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial. Consider higher trims like the Citadel or R/T for added features. However, if reliability is paramount, alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot might be better choices. Be prepared for potentially higher fuel and maintenance costs.

I've had this car since Nov 2011

This car has had a lot of repairs. It had many things break and go wrong that feels unexpected even for routine maintenance. However, it has not left me stranded on the side of the road. I would not buy another Dodge vehicle after this experience. I have 172,000 and I'm just trying to keep it limping to 200,000. It is still very much in style and sleek in appearance. The interior is comfortable- all leather, DVD, sunroof. However, the engine, transmission, and manufacturing of the guts of this car is terrible.

Biggest piece of xxxx i have ever owned

This car is the biggest piece of xxxx i have ever owned. I have spent more on repairing it than i have paying for it. we bought it for 14,000 with 40k on it and now we have spent more than that on front end drive train, transmission, and now starter and leaking oil cooler. Stay away from Dodge, run as fast as you can. We have had to have it towed 3 times and every time the tow drivers said the most towed vehicle is a Dodge

I absolutely love this car

I have compared to other similar makes and the Durango far exceeded my expectations. I knew I was buying a nice car but once I drove it I was hooked. It has great leg space in all 3 rows. Its stable on the road and is just a perfect car. I couldn't have wished for better.
