The Dodge Durango, a mid-size SUV, has been a staple in the Dodge lineup since 1998. The 2023 model continues the third generation, offering a blend of muscle-car aesthetics and SUV practicality. It comes in various trims, including SXT, GT, R/T, Citadel, and the high-performance SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat (limited availability). The pricing ranges from around $40,000 to upwards of $80,000 depending on the trim and options. Its standout feature is the available V8 power and impressive towing capacity, making it a popular choice for those needing both passenger space and workhorse capabilities.
The Good

The 2023 Dodge Durango boasts powerful engine options for exhilarating performance, appealing to emotional buyers seeking thrills. Its comfortable and spacious interior suits families. The rugged design and impressive towing capacity offer practical benefits. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provides a solid value proposition for those needing a capable and stylish SUV. Reliability can vary, but regular maintenance helps ensure longevity.

The Bad

The 2023 Dodge Durango's weaknesses include below-average fuel economy, especially with the V8 engines. The infotainment system, while functional, may feel dated compared to rivals. Some owners report issues with electrical components and the Uconnect system. The ride can be firm, particularly on models with larger wheels. Potential buyers should also be aware of the Durango's higher price point compared to some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2023 Dodge Durango Have?

While the 2023 Dodge Durango is a generally reliable vehicle, some owners have reported certain issues. Common concerns include problems with the Uconnect infotainment system, such as freezing, lagging, or connectivity issues. Some owners have also reported minor electrical glitches, such as malfunctioning sensors or issues with the power windows and locks.

Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with the higher-performance V8 engines, if they are not properly maintained. Issues such as oil leaks, cooling system problems, and transmission issues have been reported in older Durango models and might appear in the 2023 over time.

Recalls can vary and it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information specific to the 2023 model year. Past Durango models have had recalls related to issues such as faulty fuel pumps, airbag systems, and electrical components.

Specifically, potential buyers should pay attention to the proper functioning of the Uconnect system during a test drive, and ensure that all electrical components are working correctly. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial for long-term reliability, especially for models with the more powerful engines. Checking for any open recalls before purchasing is also highly recommended.

How long will the 2023 Dodge Durango last?

With proper maintenance, a 2023 Dodge Durango can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles, translating to 10-15 years of service for the average driver. Excellent maintenance habits, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing minor repairs promptly, can extend this lifespan. However, neglecting maintenance can lead to premature wear, especially in engine and transmission components. Durability weaknesses may arise in the electrical systems and Uconnect infotainment, requiring attention over time. Rust can also become a concern in regions with harsh winters and salted roads, so rustproofing is advisable.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 Dodge Durango features a Uconnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available navigation. Entertainment options include a premium sound system (Harmon Kardon available), rear-seat entertainment system with Blu-ray player (optional), and multiple USB ports.

Standard driver-assistance features often include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Optional features may include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system.

Safety features include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and traction control. Crash-test ratings from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for the most up-to-date information. Historically, the Durango has performed well in crash tests, earning good ratings in several categories. However, specific ratings can vary, so checking the latest reports is critical.

The available advanced safety technologies, combined with the robust build of the Durango, contribute to a safe and secure driving experience. The Uconnect system, while sometimes criticized for being dated, offers a user-friendly interface and a decent suite of connectivity features.

2023 Dodge Durango Prices and Market Value

The 2023 Dodge Durango's new MSRP ranged from approximately $40,000 for the base SXT trim to over $80,000 for the SRT Hellcat. Current used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and trim level, typically ranging from the mid $30,000s to the high $60,000s. Depreciation is affected by factors such as mileage, condition, and the overall demand for SUVs. High-performance trims like the SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat tend to hold their value better due to their rarity and desirability. Lower mileage and well-maintained vehicles command higher resale prices. The Durango's depreciation is fairly typical for its class.

2023 Dodge Durango Cost of Ownership

The 2023 Dodge Durango is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums can be higher, especially for high-performance trims. Fuel costs are significant, particularly with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are average, but can increase with age and mileage. V8 models often require more frequent and expensive maintenance. Long-term ownership costs, considering depreciation, fuel, insurance, and maintenance, make the Durango a less economical choice compared to some competitors, especially those with smaller engines.

2023 Dodge Durango Insurance

Insurance for a 2023 Dodge Durango is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 Dodge Durango Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 Dodge Durango competes with SUVs like the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade. In terms of performance, the Durango stands out with its powerful V8 engine options, surpassing most rivals. However, the Ford Explorer ST offers a strong turbocharged V6. Feature-wise, the Durango offers a decent array, though some competitors boast more modern infotainment systems. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Toyota Highlander and Kia Telluride generally score higher. Price-wise, the Durango is often positioned higher than the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, offering less value for money in base trims.

Alternatives depend on priorities. For performance enthusiasts, the Ford Explorer ST is a worthy contender. For those prioritizing reliability and value, the Toyota Highlander and Kia Telluride are excellent choices. The Hyundai Palisade offers a similar blend of features and value as the Telluride. If maximum towing capacity and V8 power are essential, the Durango remains a strong option. However, for most buyers, the Highlander or Telluride offer a better balance of features, reliability, and price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Dodge Durango a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 Dodge Durango is ideal for buyers who prioritize performance and towing capacity over fuel efficiency and budget. It's a good choice for families needing a three-row SUV with muscle-car DNA. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities. A used Durango can offer good value, especially if you find one with lower mileage and a comprehensive service history. Consider higher trims like the R/T or Citadel if you want the V8 engine and more features. If fuel economy and budget are primary concerns, alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Kia Telluride are better options. The SRT trims are only worthwhile for those truly seeking high performance.

Durango SRT HC Does Not Disappoint!

This is my 3rd Hellcat vehicle but first as a Durango. Always wanted this vehicle since it was announced some years ago. It does not disappoint. My dealer, Dodge of Burnsville has/is always taking great care of my needs and always works out a deal that works for me. The only improvement I can think of is the have more space in the 2nd row seating. I am tall and eat of almost all of the legroom behind me.
