The 2003 Dodge Durango is a full-size SUV offering a blend of truck-like capability and family-friendly space. As part of the Durango's first generation (1998-2003), the 2003 model boasted rugged styling and a spacious interior. Key trims included the SLT, SLT Plus, and R/T. New pricing ranged approximately from $27,000 to $35,000. Its powerful engine options and towing capacity made it popular among those needing a capable SUV.
The Good

The 2003 Dodge Durango's advantages include strong V8 engine performance (appealing to emotional buyers), offering confident acceleration and towing. Practically, its spacious interior provides comfort for passengers and cargo. While not the most fuel-efficient, its rugged design and relatively affordable price point on the used market present good value for buyers needing a capable SUV.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2003 Dodge Durango include potential issues with the automatic transmission, particularly with higher mileage. Fuel economy is poor compared to modern SUVs. Rust can be a problem in areas with road salt. Watch out for electrical issues and ensure regular maintenance has been performed, especially regarding fluid changes.

What Problems Does the 2003 Dodge Durango Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2003 Dodge Durango often revolve around the automatic transmission. Slipping or hard shifting, especially in higher-mileage vehicles, is a common complaint. Rust is another significant concern, particularly in areas where road salt is used extensively. The undercarriage, body panels, and brake lines are susceptible to corrosion. Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors or faulty wiring, can also occur.
Recalls for the 2003 Durango have addressed issues like faulty airbags and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns include the longevity of the suspension components, particularly the ball joints and control arms. The 4.7L V8 engine is generally considered reliable, but proper maintenance is crucial. Regular oil changes and cooling system flushes are essential to prevent premature wear. Earlier model years (1998-2000) had some reported issues with the front differential, but these were largely addressed in later years. However, checking the condition of the four-wheel-drive system is still recommended. Overall, while the 2003 Durango can be a capable SUV, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and thoroughly inspect any vehicle before purchase.

How long will the 2003 Dodge Durango last?

A 2003 Dodge Durango, with proper maintenance, could potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report vehicles lasting well over 15 years with diligent care. However, longevity is heavily dependent on maintenance habits. Neglecting fluid changes, ignoring warning lights, or delaying repairs will significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses include rust, transmission issues (as previously noted), and potential wear in the suspension and steering components. Regular servicing and addressing problems promptly are crucial for maximizing the Durango's lifespan.

I've got a 2003 SXT with the 4.7 and it's a great SUV. It burns a little oil if I let it sit and idle for too long, only because the valve stem seals tend to go bad on the SOHC 4.7s at an early mileage. It's not a hard fix to do, but I think I read somewhere that it can get a little costly due to labor. But otherwise it's a good truck, I've yet to be left stranded on the side of the road for a mechanical failure, and most of the maintenance I've done was easily addressed at home with the proper tools.

exhaust manifold bolts rotted off, master window contol is passing away, needs new front brakes after only 85k; I traded off a Chevy Suburban with 230k miles on it, and want my Suburban back. Hope you have lots of money for repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2003 Dodge Durango's tech features were fairly basic for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM radio with a cassette or CD player. Upgraded trims might offer a premium sound system with a CD changer. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, with no advanced safety technologies like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available. Standard safety features included front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS).
Optional features included power-adjustable seats, cruise control, and rear air conditioning. Four-wheel drive was also an available option, enhancing its off-road capability and traction in inclement weather.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2003 Dodge Durango generally showed moderate performance. While it performed adequately in frontal crash tests, side-impact protection was less impressive. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings were not particularly high either. These crash-test results should be considered in the context of other vehicles of that era; safety standards have improved significantly since 2003. Keep in mind that newer vehicles typically offer superior crash protection.

2003 Dodge Durango Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2003 Dodge Durango's prices ranged from approximately $27,000 to $35,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Durango has depreciated significantly over the years due to its age, fuel economy, and the availability of newer, more efficient SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has desirable options like four-wheel drive. A clean title and well-documented service records will also improve its resale value.

2003 Dodge Durango Cost of Ownership

The 2003 Dodge Durango is generally considered costly to own. Insurance costs may be moderate, but fuel consumption is high due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially as the vehicle ages. Replacement parts might be readily available, but labor costs can add up. Due to potential issues like rust and transmission problems, long-term ownership can involve unexpected expenses. It's not an economical choice compared to more modern, fuel-efficient SUVs.

2003 Dodge Durango Insurance

Insurance for a 2003 Dodge Durango is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2003 Dodge Durango Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2003 Dodge Durango competed with SUVs like the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Toyota 4Runner. In terms of performance, the Durango offered comparable engine power and towing capacity, particularly with the V8 options. However, its fuel economy was generally worse than its rivals. Feature-wise, the Durango was competitive, offering similar amenities in its various trim levels. In terms of reliability, the Toyota 4Runner generally outperformed the Durango, while the Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Trailblazer had mixed reliability records.
Price-wise, the Durango was often competitively priced when new, and on the used market, it can be a more affordable option than the 4Runner. However, the potential for higher repair costs should be considered. If reliability is a top priority, a Toyota 4Runner from the same era would be a better alternative, although it will likely command a higher price. If budget is a primary concern and you need similar towing capacity, the Durango can be considered, but a thorough inspection is crucial. Alternatives like the GMC Envoy (similar to the Trailblazer) offer a similar blend of features and performance but may also share similar reliability concerns.

Final Verdict: Is the 2003 Dodge Durango a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2003 Dodge Durango is ideal for someone needing a capable and relatively affordable SUV for occasional towing or hauling, and who isn't overly concerned about fuel economy. It's generally not worth buying as a primary family vehicle due to its age and potential reliability issues. If considering a purchase, it's only worthwhile on the used market at a low price, and after a thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic. Look for well-maintained examples with detailed service records, preferably with the 4.7L V8 engine. Avoid models with excessive rust or signs of transmission problems. Be prepared for potential repairs and higher running costs.

A great family SUV!

I actually have 2 Durango's A 2002 5.9L FWD, and a 2003 4.7L 4WD, I love them both, although admittedly I drive the 2003 more often as it gets better milage with the 4.7L. Although the body style is not as flashy as the newer ones, the mechanical workings of the pre 2005 were a LOT more reliable, the 2003 is currently sitting at 197,680 mi (I bought it at around 140,000) and I have only done minimal routine upkeep/maintenance like fluid changes, tires, brakes, etc. The third row seating is nice, mine has the split bench seat in front, and seats 8, or the rear seats both fold down for plenty of cargo room, so taking road trips with or without passengers is no problem. Towing capacity is also better than average for an SUV, and the ride is comfortable. Overall I can't really think of any complaint I have had about this rig since I have had it, other than after 17 years of weather exposure it could do with a fresh coat of paint.

Good strong SUV!

I just bought a 03 Dodge Durango from Auto Empire in Brooklyn, N.Y. from one of the owners Eddie. Eddie took care of me with a good price and completed all the paperwork and had me out of there in no time with keys in hand. Eddie is a very professional business man and I would highly recommend his company if you are looking for a reliable vehicle to take home. I just can't say enough good things about Eddie and Auto Empire!!!!!
