The Good
The 2003 Dodge Durango's advantages include strong V8 engine performance (appealing to emotional buyers), offering confident acceleration and towing. Practically, its spacious interior provides comfort for passengers and cargo. While not the most fuel-efficient, its rugged design and relatively affordable price point on the used market present good value for buyers needing a capable SUV.
The Bad
Known weaknesses of the 2003 Dodge Durango include potential issues with the automatic transmission, particularly with higher mileage. Fuel economy is poor compared to modern SUVs. Rust can be a problem in areas with road salt. Watch out for electrical issues and ensure regular maintenance has been performed, especially regarding fluid changes.

What Problems Does the 2003 Dodge Durango Have?
Recalls for the 2003 Durango have addressed issues like faulty airbags and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns include the longevity of the suspension components, particularly the ball joints and control arms. The 4.7L V8 engine is generally considered reliable, but proper maintenance is crucial. Regular oil changes and cooling system flushes are essential to prevent premature wear. Earlier model years (1998-2000) had some reported issues with the front differential, but these were largely addressed in later years. However, checking the condition of the four-wheel-drive system is still recommended. Overall, while the 2003 Durango can be a capable SUV, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and thoroughly inspect any vehicle before purchase.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Optional features included power-adjustable seats, cruise control, and rear air conditioning. Four-wheel drive was also an available option, enhancing its off-road capability and traction in inclement weather.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2003 Dodge Durango generally showed moderate performance. While it performed adequately in frontal crash tests, side-impact protection was less impressive. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings were not particularly high either. These crash-test results should be considered in the context of other vehicles of that era; safety standards have improved significantly since 2003. Keep in mind that newer vehicles typically offer superior crash protection.

How Does the 2003 Dodge Durango Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Price-wise, the Durango was often competitively priced when new, and on the used market, it can be a more affordable option than the 4Runner. However, the potential for higher repair costs should be considered. If reliability is a top priority, a Toyota 4Runner from the same era would be a better alternative, although it will likely command a higher price. If budget is a primary concern and you need similar towing capacity, the Durango can be considered, but a thorough inspection is crucial. Alternatives like the GMC Envoy (similar to the Trailblazer) offer a similar blend of features and performance but may also share similar reliability concerns.

Final Verdict: Is the 2003 Dodge Durango a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

2003 Durango SXTI've got a 2003 SXT with the 4.7 and it's a great SUV. It burns a little oil if I let it sit and idle for too long, only because the valve stem seals tend to go bad on the SOHC 4.7s at an early mileage. It's not a hard fix to do, but I think I read somewhere that it can get a little costly due to labor. But otherwise it's a good truck, I've yet to be left stranded on the side of the road for a mechanical failure, and most of the maintenance I've done was easily addressed at home with the proper tools.

A great family SUV!I actually have 2 Durango's A 2002 5.9L FWD, and a 2003 4.7L 4WD, I love them both, although admittedly I drive the 2003 more often as it gets better milage with the 4.7L. Although the body style is not as flashy as the newer ones, the mechanical workings of the pre 2005 were a LOT more reliable, the 2003 is currently sitting at 197,680 mi (I bought it at around 140,000) and I have only done minimal routine upkeep/maintenance like fluid changes, tires, brakes, etc. The third row seating is nice, mine has the split bench seat in front, and seats 8, or the rear seats both fold down for plenty of cargo room, so taking road trips with or without passengers is no problem. Towing capacity is also better than average for an SUV, and the ride is comfortable. Overall I can't really think of any complaint I have had about this rig since I have had it, other than after 17 years of weather exposure it could do with a fresh coat of paint.

Good strong SUV!I just bought a 03 Dodge Durango from Auto Empire in Brooklyn, N.Y. from one of the owners Eddie. Eddie took care of me with a good price and completed all the paperwork and had me out of there in no time with keys in hand. Eddie is a very professional business man and I would highly recommend his company if you are looking for a reliable vehicle to take home. I just can't say enough good things about Eddie and Auto Empire!!!!!
