The 2005 Dodge Durango is a full-size SUV, part of the second generation (2004-2009). It offers three rows of seating and truck-like capabilities. Key trims included the ST, SLT, and Limited. New pricing ranged from around $30,000 to $40,000. Its spacious interior and powerful engine options, especially the HEMI V8, made it a popular choice for families needing both passenger and cargo space, plus serious towing capacity.
The Good

The 2005 Durango offers strong performance, especially with the V8 engines, appealing to those seeking power. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior make it practical for families. The rugged design and commanding presence attract buyers looking for a tough, capable SUV. It provides a good value proposition for its size and capabilities, though reliability can be a concern.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2005 Durango include fuel economy, which is poor, especially with the larger engines. Reliability can be spotty, with potential issues including electrical problems, transmission issues, and suspension wear. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with road salt. Careful inspection and a thorough pre-purchase inspection are crucial.

What Problems Does the 2005 Dodge Durango Have?

The 2005 Dodge Durango has several frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission, are common, including slipping and rough shifting. Electrical problems, such as issues with the power windows, door locks, and instrument cluster, are also frequently reported. Suspension components, especially ball joints and tie rod ends, are prone to wear and require replacement. Rust can be a significant issue, especially in areas where road salt is used. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and sensor failures, are also reported, particularly in higher-mileage examples.

Recalls have been issued for various issues, including potential problems with the fuel system and airbags. Long-term reliability concerns include the aforementioned transmission and electrical issues, as well as the potential for rust and engine wear. It's critical to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls and to have a thorough pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic. Earlier model years of this generation (2004-2005) tend to have more reported issues compared to later years.

How long will the 2005 Dodge Durango last?

A well-maintained 2005 Dodge Durango can reasonably be expected to reach 200,000 miles or more. With consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing issues promptly, it can last for 15-20 years. However, neglect can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses include rust, transmission problems, and electrical issues. The suspension components also tend to wear out over time, requiring replacement. Regular maintenance and careful attention to these potential problem areas are crucial for maximizing its lifespan.

Vehicle is reliable at 236085 miles but bad gas mileage with 5.3 Hemi v8. Every feature works the only thing that need replacement was the fule pump.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Dodge Durango's built-in tech was fairly basic for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems, including a premium Infinity sound system. Optional entertainment features included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. It offered standard features like power steering and brakes. No advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking were available.

Safety features included standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Side curtain airbags were available as an option on some trims. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied depending on the specific test. Some tests resulted in 4-star ratings, while others were lower. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings were not consistently high, with some areas showing marginal or poor performance. It is important to research the specific crash test ratings for the 2005 model year to fully understand its safety performance relative to other vehicles.

2005 Dodge Durango Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Dodge Durango ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Durango has depreciated significantly due to its age, fuel economy, and reliability concerns. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, whether it has the desirable HEMI V8 engine, and the presence of any major mechanical issues. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage command higher prices.

2005 Dodge Durango Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Dodge Durango is generally considered costly to own. Insurance costs are moderate, but fuel costs are high due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially as the vehicle ages, due to potential issues with the transmission, electrical system, and suspension. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential repairs and higher fuel consumption. It is not an economical vehicle compared to more modern or smaller SUVs.

2005 Dodge Durango Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Dodge Durango is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Dodge Durango Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2005 Dodge Durango competed with SUVs like the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Ford Explorer, and Toyota 4Runner. In terms of performance, the Durango, especially with the HEMI, offered comparable or superior power to some rivals. Feature-wise, it was generally competitive, though some rivals offered more advanced tech even back then. However, reliability is where the Durango often fell short compared to the Toyota 4Runner, which is known for its long-term dependability. The Ford Explorer had its own share of issues, but the TrailBlazer was generally considered more reliable than the Durango.

Price-wise, the Durango was often competitively priced, particularly on the used market. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota 4Runner is a better alternative, albeit often at a higher price point, even used. The Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon are similar in size and capability and might be worth considering. However, careful inspection and maintenance records are critical when considering any used SUV of this age.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Dodge Durango a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2005 Dodge Durango is ideal for buyers who need a spacious, capable SUV with strong towing capacity and aren't overly concerned about fuel economy or potential reliability issues. It's worth buying *used* only if the price is right and a thorough inspection reveals it to be in good condition. Opting for a later model year within the second generation (2006-2009) might mitigate some of the earlier reliability concerns. A mechanically sound example with the HEMI engine could be a good value for those who prioritize power and space over long-term dependability. However, buyers should be prepared for potential repairs and higher running costs.

Surprisingly Good...

I bought the Limited version new in 2005 with every available option, and have to say that it's virtually been without fault from day one. I am considering selling it because I just picked up a 2011 Lexus 460, but have serious reservations about letting this vehicle go at current market prices. The same Lexus GX 460 from the same year would command almost 3 times the price of a fully outfitted Durango from that year. Granted, Lexus reliability is in a class of it's own, but this vehicle is "highly" underrated when standing against it's most common competitors. Compare any other US or European equivalent in terms of size (body on frame), towing ability, true 4 wheel drive capability, reliability, etc. and this vehicle is far closer to a Lexus than a Tahoe or Expedition when it comes to overall longevity and driving satisfaction. Yes, the Hemi is thirsty, but it provides effortless acceleration, and sounds just as strong as the day I bought it. Niggly little things like the driver's seat shroud, which can crack after a hundred-K, or the little plastic shield that covers where the seatbelt enters the seat frame can break over time - all things which don't quite make it a Lexus - but which are all very small repair details that can be fixed easily and inexpensively. On the whole, I see many of these vehicles being sold by original owners with 180 to 250k on them - that's saying something when most Mercedes or BMW full size SUV's of the same vintage are often on the market at half that mileage with 3 or more owners, and costing only slightly more (talk about depreciation). I think the Hemi Durango vehicle is by-and-large one of the best little unknown gems out there when it comes to a very reliable full sized body-on-frame SUV at an incredible price.

Amazing Vehicle

Reliable, Comfortable, Fast, Great Looking, what more do you need? This thing is a tank, goes everywhere and never skips a beat. I think this is the best kept secret for a great reliable family hauler.

Awesome for the fall & winter weather

This car can go thru a snowstorm with no problems. Never had to be shoveled out or anything. Just takes off right from.parking spot even if snowed in
