The 2000 Chevrolet Blazer is a compact SUV that was part of the second generation (1995-2005). It came in 2-door and 4-door body styles. Key trims included the base model, LS, and LT. New, the Blazer ranged roughly from $20,000 to $28,000 depending on the trim and options. Its blend of truck-like ruggedness with a relatively affordable price made it popular, as well as its capable 4x4 system.
The Good

The 2000 Chevy Blazer offers decent performance from its V6 engine and respectable off-road capability. Practically, it provided a good value for its size and features. Emotionally, its traditional SUV design and association with adventure appealed to buyers. While not the most refined, it offers simple, rugged dependability for the price.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2000 Chevy Blazer include potential issues with the fuel system (fuel pump failure), the automatic transmission, and rust, especially in areas with road salt. The interior plastics can be prone to cracking, and overall build quality is not always the highest. Watch for leaks as well.

2000 Chevrolet Blazer: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: 4.3L V6
  • Horsepower: 190 hp
  • Fuel Economy: 16 mpg city / 22 mpg highway (2WD models, estimates may vary)
  • 0-60 Times: Approximately 9 seconds (estimates may vary depending on drivetrain and condition)
  • Towing Capacity: Around 5,300-5,500 lbs (with proper equipment)

Trim-Level Features:
  • Base: Standard features included cloth upholstery, air conditioning, AM/FM radio, and basic instrumentation.
  • LS: Added features such as upgraded cloth upholstery, power windows and locks, cruise control, and sometimes alloy wheels.
  • LT: Typically included leather upholstery, premium sound system, automatic climate control, and other comfort and convenience features. 4x4 models often came standard with skid plates and other off-road enhancements.

4-wheel drive was an available option on all trims. Additional options packages offered things like sunroofs, upgraded audio systems, and various appearance packages. The 4.3L V6 was the primary engine offered, providing adequate power for daily driving and towing light loads. The Blazer's rugged construction and available 4-wheel drive made it a decent choice for off-road adventures, albeit not as capable as more purpose-built off-road vehicles.

What Problems Does the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer Have?

The 2000 Chevrolet Blazer, like many vehicles of its age, has a history of frequently reported problems. Fuel system issues, particularly fuel pump failures, are common. The automatic transmission (4L60E) can also be a source of trouble, with reports of slipping or failure, especially with higher mileage. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in areas where road salt is used. Body panels, brake lines, and the frame itself can be susceptible to corrosion.

Electrical issues, such as problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the climate control system, are also reported. Some owners have experienced problems with the intake manifold gaskets, leading to coolant leaks. Recalls for the 2000 Blazer addressed issues such as faulty windshield wiper motors and potential fuel leakage in certain conditions. These recalls should have been addressed by dealerships, but it's essential to verify any used Blazer's recall history.

Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the age of the vehicle. Components such as the starter, alternator, and various sensors are more likely to fail over time. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can help extend the Blazer's lifespan. Prior maintenance records are crucial when considering purchasing a used 2000 Blazer.

How long will the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer last?

With good maintenance, a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, reaching this milestone heavily depends on consistent upkeep, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs. Many Blazers of this vintage are showing signs of wear and tear, with owners averaging around 150,000 to 250,000 miles depending on care. Long-term weaknesses include rust (especially in colder climates), transmission wear, and electrical component failures. Neglecting maintenance accelerates these issues significantly.

bought this suv about 4 yrs ago and have been replacing parts every since the heater went out no ac it has the climate control system which makes every part you buy close to $200 or more manual system would be like $40 replaced distributor fuel pump all the sensors purge valve recently the radiator cracked replaced that now the driver door won't shut been trying to get it to a place where I can trade it off and get some money back but something is always coming apart. really liked the truck just to many problems.
Good if you like being nickel and dimed!!
had the car for two months, ball joints went, six months it locked itself in four wheel low and took the mechanics two weeks to knock it out. bad 4wd module, was told it was a typical problem. the governer chip made this thing terrible if ur in a hurry in the morning or try flooring it, the car sounds like it will bogg down if u do without letting it warm up, not a very settling feeling. tranny was slipping and leaking fluid out the pan. typical 4.3 liter. why do u think they changed to a 4.2 inline 6 in 02??? the engine has decent power, certainly not that of its rivals but was ok. i got rid of this demon before it really got bad, bad resale value and not reliable enough to keep. so yea i wouldnt touch another. also in the winter at about 15 degrees it took me 10 minutes to start this beast, ive seen things which are carburated start better. i liked the leather seats and the gas wasnt all too bad. nice big mirrors. and decent room in the cabin, unsafe feeling handling. looks old. too boxy with bad crash test ratings. owned it for 7 months and its gone because of too many problems and bought it with 75k and sold it with 81k!!!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Chevrolet Blazer's built-in tech was relatively basic by today's standards. Entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio with cassette or CD player, depending on the trim level. Higher trims might have offered a premium sound system. Driver-assistance features were limited; ABS was available, but more advanced features like traction control were not standard.

Safety features included front airbags, but side airbags were not available. Some models had daytime running lights. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA varied depending on the specific test, but generally, the Blazer received average marks for frontal impact protection. Rollover ratings were typically lower due to its SUV design.

Optional features varied by trim and included things like power windows and locks, cruise control, and a sunroof. Remote keyless entry was also an available option. Considering its age, the 2000 Blazer lacks the advanced safety and technology features found in modern vehicles. It's important to prioritize safety if considering this vehicle and ensure that all safety equipment is functioning correctly. Overall, the 2000 Blazer provided basic transportation with minimal technological frills.

2000 Chevrolet Blazer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer ranged from approximately $20,000 to $28,000 depending on the trim and options. Today, used market prices are significantly lower, typically ranging from $2,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been substantial due to age and advancements in automotive technology. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, mileage, rust presence, maintenance history, and whether it's a 2WD or 4WD model. 4WD models typically command a slightly higher price, especially in regions with inclement weather.

2000 Chevrolet Blazer Cost of Ownership

The 2000 Chevrolet Blazer is generally not economical to own compared to modern vehicles. Insurance costs can be moderate due to its age. Fuel economy is poor, averaging around 16-22 mpg. Maintenance and repair costs can be high due to the age of the vehicle and potential for breakdowns. Parts are generally available and relatively affordable, but labor costs can add up. Rust repair can also be a significant expense. Long-term, ownership can be costly if the vehicle is not well-maintained or requires significant repairs.

2000 Chevrolet Blazer Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2000 Chevrolet Blazer competed with vehicles like the Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee (XJ), Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V. In terms of performance, the Blazer's 4.3L V6 was competitive with the Explorer's V6 options. However, the Explorer often offered more powerful V8 options. The Cherokee (XJ) offered similar ruggedness but often felt more nimble. Compared to the RAV4 and CR-V, the Blazer was less fuel-efficient and lacked their modern design and features.

In terms of reliability, the Blazer's reliability record is mixed compared to its rivals. The RAV4 and CR-V are typically considered more reliable. The Cherokee (XJ) can be durable but also prone to rust. The Explorer had its own share of reliability issues. The Blazer offered a lower price point compared to some of its rivals, particularly when new. However, used prices reflect its age and condition.

Alternatives to the 2000 Blazer include the Toyota 4Runner (for greater reliability and off-road capability, albeit at a higher price), a newer, more fuel-efficient small SUV, or a well-maintained Jeep Cherokee (XJ) if looking for a classic, rugged SUV. If budget is a major concern, the Blazer can be a reasonable option, but it's essential to carefully inspect its condition and maintenance history.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2000 Chevrolet Blazer is best suited for someone seeking an inexpensive, basic SUV with some off-road capability. It can be worthwhile if purchased for a very low price and thoroughly inspected for rust and mechanical issues. It's ideal for someone who enjoys working on cars themselves and doesn't mind the potential for repairs. A well-maintained 4x4 model could be useful as a second vehicle for winter driving or light off-roading. It's generally not recommended as a primary family vehicle due to its age, safety features, and fuel economy. Avoid if possible and check alternatives.

I own a 2000 ZR2 Blazer 4.

I own a 2000 ZR2 Blazer 4.3 auto w/auto 4x4. So far, it's been a great rig. Solid. Nice to look at. A bit underpowered, but fine for me. Mine has 119k original miles and has been very well cared for. Gas mileage isn't great compared to newer rigs, but fine for me as I don't put a ton of miles on. It's very comfortable in the front and rear. The original Bose stereo system is surprisingly loud and clear with all the factory speakers still working fine. If you are looking for a fun, comfortable, solid rig, you can't beat it!
