The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro is a modern muscle car inspired by its iconic heritage. This fifth-generation Camaro, offered as a coupe or convertible, spans the 2010-2015 model years. The 2012 model's original pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $55,000 depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2012 Camaro boasts thrilling performance, especially in SS and ZL1 trims, appealing to emotional buyers. Its bold design turns heads. More practically, it offers reasonable reliability, comfortable front seats, and decent fuel economy (depending on the engine). It represents good value for its performance class.

The Bad

The 2012 Camaro's weaknesses include limited rear visibility and a cramped back seat. Some owners have reported issues with the electrical system and paint quality. What Problems Does the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro include issues with the timing chain in the V6 engine, which can lead to costly repairs if not addressed. Some owners have also reported problems with the automatic transmission, particularly in earlier model years (2010-2011). Paint quality issues, such as chipping and peeling, have also been noted. Electrical system glitches, including problems with the infotainment system and power windows, are also fairly common complaints.
Recalls for the 2012 Camaro have addressed issues such as potential ignition switch problems (though this was more prevalent in other GM vehicles), and in some cases, issues with the side airbags.
Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the timing chain issue in the V6, potential transmission failures, and the durability of the paint. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and inspections, can help mitigate some of these concerns. It's also advisable to check the vehicle history report for any prior recall repairs or significant maintenance records before purchasing a used 2012 Camaro.

How long will the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro can easily exceed 150,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring warning signs can significantly shorten its lifespan. Key weaknesses over time include the aforementioned timing chain issues in the V6, potential transmission wear, and deterioration of interior components like seat upholstery and dashboard materials. Rust can also become a concern in regions with harsh winters. Regular servicing and preventative maintenance are crucial for maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro offers a range of tech, entertainment, and safety features. Standard features include keyless entry, air conditioning, and a basic audio system. Higher trims offered the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with a touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone integration.
Driver-assistance features were limited in the 2012 Camaro, primarily consisting of standard anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control. Rear park assist was available as an option.
Safety features include front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags. The 2012 Camaro received generally good crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). NHTSA awarded it an overall score of 4 out of 5 stars.
Optional features included a premium audio system (Boston Acoustics), a sunroof, heated seats, and leather upholstery. The ZL1 trim featured performance-oriented technologies like Magnetic Ride Control suspension for improved handling and ride comfort. Overall, the 2012 Camaro's tech and safety features were competitive for its time, but lacked some of the more advanced driver-assistance systems found in newer vehicles.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ranged from approximately $23,000 for a base LS model to $55,000+ for a ZL1. Current used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Expect to find LS and LT models in the $10,000-$18,000 range, while SS models command $18,000-$30,000. ZL1 models can still fetch upwards of $35,000, potentially more for well-maintained examples with low mileage.
Depreciation is influenced by factors like mileage, condition, and trim level. The high-performance SS and ZL1 models tend to hold their value better than the base trims. A clean title, complete maintenance records, and desirable options also positively impact resale value.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums can be higher, especially for younger drivers or those with the SS or ZL1 trims. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine, with the V8 models consuming significantly more fuel. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs, especially for engine or transmission issues, can be expensive. Overall, it's not the most economical car, but the ownership experience can be rewarding for those seeking performance and style.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro's key rivals include the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. In terms of performance, the Camaro SS and ZL1 are highly competitive, often matching or exceeding the Mustang GT and Challenger SRT8. However, the Mustang often offers slightly sharper handling.
Regarding features, all three offer similar levels of equipment for their respective trims, though the specific infotainment systems and available options may differ. Reliability is a mixed bag, with each model having its own set of potential issues. The Challenger is often perceived as having slightly better long-term reliability, but it lags in fuel economy and handling compared to Camaro.
In terms of price, the Camaro typically falls in line with the Mustang and Challenger. A similar alternative to the Camaro could be a used BMW 335i coupe for those seeking a more refined driving experience, or a Nissan 370Z for a sportier feel. However, for pure American muscle, the Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger are the primary contenders. The best choice depends on individual priorities regarding performance, styling, and overall driving experience. The Mustang is often considered a better all-around choice due to its sharper handling and better visibility. However, if you prefer aggressive styling and raw power, the Camaro remains a compelling option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro a Good Hatchback?

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro is ideal for those seeking a stylish and powerful muscle car experience. It's worth buying if you're aware of its potential weaknesses, like limited visibility, and prioritize performance and aggressive styling. Buying used is generally recommended due to depreciation.
The SS trim offers the best balance of performance and value. Thoroughly inspect any used Camaro, paying particular attention to the timing chain (V6), transmission, and paint condition. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended. If you need rear passenger space or prioritize fuel economy, other options may be better suited.

Amazing car to drive what a blast

What a great car to drive. I beat on this 2ss constantly with absolutely no problems ever. As far as Evelyn and the blend door, you never have door issues if you don't drop pens or mascara and stuff down from the dash and jam it up. I haven't had one problem in 100,000 very very hard miles and 4 or 5 sets of tires. Overall an amazing fun car

2012 45th Anniversary Edition Cameo

I purchase this car new in March of 2012. I currently have only 6782 miles. It's the 45th Anniversary Edition Cameo. It's great! Lighted door panels and cup holders. Monogram seats, door seals and Matt's. Red and grey striped hood and trunk lid. 20 inch weeks. I love my car!

Blend door blues

My 2012 Camaro SS is my dream car. At 42,000 miles my blend door is broken. There needs to be a recall on this for the amount of money put into this car or there should be a discount on the cost to have it replaced. When will it go out again once its replaced? A cheap plastic part in an expensive car. This is my 3rd Camaro,my last.I think in the future a better and stronger material should be used for the blend door and just maby this will prolong the life of the piece itself.

LOVE this car!

LOVE this car! Has the older Γ’β‚¬Λœ67 or Γ’β‚¬Λœ68 look with a modern style upgrade. I get so many compliments on it. It’s a 2012 2SS convertible, burgundy color with black stripes down the hood and trunk. Bought it with 16k miles and it looks brand new. It’s a toy for me and plan to drive it cross country and back for 2 to 3 months. Looking forward to cruising with my sunglasses on, the top day and radio turned all the way up and drive down any road that looks interesting with no real agenda or plan.

Fast and Fun !

I've owned my 2012 RS since aug.2015 and without a doubt this car is reliable ! All I've ever needed to do is regular oil changes(Mobile 1 5W30) every 7500 miles with new oil filter and that's it. It's smooth, quiet, comfortable and crazy fast for a V-6. I get 30+mpg because it has 22inch IROC wheels so the engine does'nt rev as much to get the same speed. And now they make a 2021 ZL1 front facia for it, hint hint !
