Rating: 3.84
Based on 39 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu marked a significant redesign, moving to a larger platform. It was available as a sedan and, unusually, a sedan-based Maxx hatchback. Key trims included the base, LS, and LT. New, the Malibu ranged from roughly $17,000 to $21,000. Its spacious interior, available V6 engine, and focus on comfort made it a popular choice for families seeking an affordable and practical mid-size car.
The Good

The 2004 Malibu offered a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers. The available V6 provided adequate performance. It represented good value for the money, undercutting many rivals on price. The Malibu Maxx's hatchback versatility could appeal to those seeking extra utility.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2004 Malibu include some reports of electrical issues, particularly with the window motors and door locks. Suspension components, like struts, may wear out faster than expected. Check for rust, especially in areas prone to salt. The 4-cylinder engine can feel underpowered. Transmission issues have also been reported. Regular maintenance is key to minimizing problems.

What Problems Does the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu has been subject to recalls and has experienced some frequently reported issues. Common problems include electrical issues affecting power windows, door locks, and the ignition switch. Some owners have reported transmission problems, including hard shifting and slipping, particularly in models with higher mileage.
Suspension components, specifically struts and sway bar links, are prone to wear and may need replacement. Engine issues, while less frequent, can include oil leaks and sensor failures.
Some recalls were issued for the 2004 Malibu, addressing issues such as the ignition switch (potentially causing the engine to stall) and airbag deployment. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the age of the vehicle. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigating potential problems. Before purchasing a used 2004 Malibu, it is essential to check the vehicle's recall history and inspect for signs of the aforementioned issues.

How long will the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Average mileage for well-maintained examples typically ranges from 150,000 to 250,000 miles. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance. Weaknesses tend to emerge in the electrical system (window motors, locks), suspension components (struts, bushings), and potentially the transmission. Rust can also become a significant issue, particularly in colder climates where road salt is used. Consistent oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing issues promptly are crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

I’ve driven this car for 3 years and it still lasts me, it’s just now starting to crap out a bit. Not too great in snow but it does have a traction control button and a low gear. The cars got a good bit of punch to it but be careful as it destroys the tires, I’ve had numerous things in the car give out (brake fluid leak, horn hasn’t worked for years, vent valve solenoid has a very weak connection) but even through all the abuse I’ve put it through she’s still going stron.

This car got me through 16 years of driving. Me, and both kids, drive this car all over Michigan! Car runs good, body still looks good, extremely reliable! I just felt the need for a change.
Justina
This car is slightly older but it drives like it's brand new. It's a smooth, quiet ride. It's visually appealing as well. There are a could of dents and very tiny bits of rust, but overall it doesn't act or look it's age.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu offered a fairly basic level of technology for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio and, depending on the trim, a CD player. Higher trims offered features such as cruise control and remote keyless entry. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available.
Safety features included standard front airbags and optional side airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were also available, improving braking performance. The Malibu received generally good crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Keep in mind that safety standards have evolved since 2004.
Optional features could include OnStar, which provided emergency assistance and remote diagnostics. The entertainment system was relatively basic, with no options for navigation or advanced connectivity. Tech like Bluetooth was not standard. The focus was more on providing reliable and comfortable transportation than cutting-edge technology.

2004 Chevrolet Malibu Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu ranged from approximately $17,000 to $21,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Malibu has depreciated significantly due to its age and the general depreciation curve of cars. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's mechanical condition, the presence of rust, the mileage, and the availability of maintenance records. Models with lower mileage and a clean history command higher prices, while those with significant mechanical issues or high mileage sell for considerably less.

2004 Chevrolet Malibu Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu is generally considered economical to own, but age plays a factor. Insurance costs are typically lower than newer vehicles. Fuel economy is decent, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance costs can be moderate; however, repairs may become more frequent and potentially expensive due to the car's age. Parts are generally readily available and relatively affordable. Overall, the Malibu represents a budget-friendly option for transportation, but be prepared for potential repairs associated with an older vehicle. Budgeting for unexpected maintenance is recommended.

2004 Chevrolet Malibu Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu competed against vehicles like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Taurus, and Nissan Altima. Compared to the Camry and Accord, the Malibu generally offered a lower price point but didn't match their reputation for reliability. The Taurus was a similar domestic competitor, but the Malibu offered a more modern design. The Altima offered a sportier driving experience but potentially at the expense of long-term reliability.
In terms of features, the Malibu was competitive but didn't necessarily stand out. For buyers prioritizing reliability and longevity, a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord from the same year might be a better choice, although they typically command a higher price. A Ford Focus or Mazda 3 could be considered for buyers looking for something smaller and potentially more fuel-efficient. For someone on a very tight budget, a well-maintained 2004 Malibu could be a decent option, but thorough inspection and maintenance history are crucial.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable transportation. It's worth buying *if* you find a well-maintained example with low mileage and a documented service history. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. The LS or LT trims offer more features than the base model.
Avoid models with a history of neglect or significant mechanical issues. Given its age, don't expect cutting-edge technology or performance. If reliability and longevity are top priorities, consider alternatives like a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, even if it means paying a premium. Otherwise, the Malibu can be a cost-effective choice for basic transportation.

Great Mom Mobile

I bought my Malibu new after trading in my minivan, I was sick of minivans and have been very impressed with my Malibu. The car is large enough to fit everything I need, it accelerates quickly and still runs strong! I love how quiet the engine is and how smooth it drives. It rarely needs repairs and seems like it will run forever. The only ongoing issue it’s had that no mechanic can fix is that it has a tendency to die on me when I am backing out of parking spaces and my driveway. Sometimes after it dies I have to fight it a bit to get it started again and sometimes it starts right backup. I would highly recommend this car to anyone.

Good Overall, not in snow

I’ve driven this car for 3 years and it still lasts me, it’s just now starting to crap out a bit. Not too great in snow but it does have a traction control button and a low gear. The cars got a good bit of punch to it but be careful as it destroys the tires, I’ve had numerous things in the car give out (brake fluid leak, horn hasn’t worked for years, vent valve solenoid has a very weak connection) but even through all the abuse I’ve put it through she’s still going stron.

Most reliable car I've owned thus far

This car got me through 16 years of driving. Me, and both kids, drive this car all over Michigan! Car runs good, body still looks good, extremely reliable! I just felt the need for a change.

Just ok

The petal are to close together. Gas and brake petal a little to close. Didn’t know about all the recalls this car has on it. But there is a lot of them. Don’t know what’s been fixed and what hasn’t.

A Great First Car

When I bought this car, it had about 86K miles. It helped me in so many different ways, such as: helping me get to and from work, visiting family and even college! Unfortunately, this car was totaled at 95K Miles, may it rest in peace.

Great Car

This car is slightly older but it drives like it's brand new. It's a smooth, quiet ride. It's visually appealing as well. There are a could of dents and very tiny bits of rust, but overall it doesn't act or look it's age.
