The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan that has been part of Chevy's lineup for decades. It offers a comfortable ride and a spacious interior. Key trims for 2021 include L, LS, RS, and Premier. The Malibu stands out as a value-oriented option in a competitive segment. The pricing range generally falls between $23,000 and $34,000, depending on the trim and options. Its popularity stems from its blend of affordability, practicality, and fuel efficiency for daily commutes.
The Good

The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu boasts a comfortable ride and spacious cabin, appealing to practical buyers seeking a reliable family sedan. Its fuel efficiency is a key advantage, saving money at the pump. The sleek design and available sporty RS trim add emotional appeal, while the competitive pricing delivers excellent value for money.

The Bad

The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu's weaknesses include a somewhat uninspired base engine and a less engaging driving experience compared to some rivals. The infotainment system, while functional, isn't the most modern. Potential buyers should watch out for transmission issues reported in earlier model years, although these appear less common in the 2021 model.

What Problems Does the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

While the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu is generally considered reliable, some owners have reported issues. One area of concern can be the transmission, with reports of hard shifting or hesitation, although this is more prevalent in older model years. The 2021 model seems to have fewer complaints but it is something to consider. Some owners have also noted issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing or slow response times. It's crucial to check the vehicle history for any recalls or technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to these issues.
Long-term reliability can be affected by regular maintenance. Neglecting scheduled services like oil changes and transmission fluid replacements can lead to problems down the line. Premature wear on suspension components and brake systems are also potential concerns. There have been some recalls related to airbag sensors and fuel pump issues on similar Chevrolet models which may indirectly relate to the 2021 Malibu, so a thorough check of recall history is always advised. Owners should be diligent about addressing any warning lights or unusual noises promptly to prevent minor issues from escalating into major repairs. Checking online forums and owner reviews can provide further insights into common problems and potential preventative measures.

How long will the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 Chevrolet Malibu can easily last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Consistent oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and adherence to the recommended service schedule are crucial. Long-term durability depends heavily on driving habits and environmental conditions. Weaknesses may appear in the form of minor electrical issues, gradual wear of interior components, and potential corrosion in regions with harsh winters. Keeping the car clean and protected from the elements can significantly extend its lifespan. Proper care for the transmission is also critical to its longevity.

This car is a LEMON!!!! Do not buy!!! A/C system is so bad, people in backseat can not get air when hot, and not even 14,000 miles??? It dies in middle of street with all linds of lights going off, says no gas when had full tank, starts back up, get it home, barely, dealership has had for almost 2 months after a month of sitting at home, and cant find anything.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer a premium Bose audio system. Driver-assistance features include a standard rearview camera, with optional features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert available on upper trims.
Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and traction control. The 2021 Malibu received good crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), although specific ratings can vary based on the model year and testing criteria. Optional features also included a sunroof, wireless charging, and heated seats for enhanced comfort. The Premier trim offers the most advanced technology, including a larger driver information display and enhanced safety systems. The infotainment system, while user-friendly, lacks some of the more modern features found in competing vehicles, such as a fully digital instrument cluster. The availability of advanced safety features depends heavily on the chosen trim level and optional packages.

2021 Chevrolet Malibu Prices and Market Value

The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu had a starting MSRP around $23,000 when new, with higher trims reaching up to $34,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $16,000 to $25,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Malibu experiences average depreciation for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (Premier models hold value better), and overall market demand for used sedans. A clean vehicle history and documented maintenance records can also improve resale value.

2021 Chevrolet Malibu Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate, and fuel efficiency is a strong point, especially with the 1.5L turbo engine. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively affordable. While major repairs can be costly, the Malibu's reliability helps minimize unexpected expenses. Overall, long-term ownership costs are lower compared to some of its competitors, making it a budget-friendly choice.

2021 Chevrolet Malibu Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Chevrolet Malibu is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu competes with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Hyundai Sonata. In terms of performance, the Malibu's base engine is less engaging than some rivals, while the 2.0L turbo provides decent power. The Camry and Accord generally offer better handling and more refined powertrains. The Malibu's features are competitive, but some rivals offer more advanced technology. Reliability is comparable to the Altima and Sonata, but the Camry and Accord have a stronger reputation.
Price-wise, the Malibu often offers a more affordable entry point. If reliability and resale value are top priorities, the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord are better choices. If you want more features for the money, the Hyundai Sonata is a strong contender. The Nissan Altima is a similar alternative, offering a balance of features and value. The Malibu is a good option for buyers seeking an affordable and comfortable mid-size sedan, but those prioritizing performance or advanced technology might prefer one of its rivals.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu is a solid choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a comfortable and fuel-efficient mid-size sedan. It's ideal for commuters and families who prioritize value and practicality over sporty performance or cutting-edge technology. Whether it's worth buying depends on your needs. A used 2021 Malibu, particularly an LS or RS trim, offers excellent value. The Premier trim is worthwhile if you desire more power and advanced features. Consider a thorough inspection and vehicle history check before purchasing to ensure reliability.

2021 Malibu Epic Fail

I purchased a brand new 2021 Chevrolet Malibu RS. In under 3 years I have experienced mechanical problems, electrical problems and frequently replacing tires. The transmission completely went out and I am beyond disappointed and frustrated that the car has failed to hold up in such a short time. I would never recommend anyone to purchase a Malibu. JDPower will be notified about my experience

Frequent car renter on September 8, 2023

Universal Rent-A-Car

I've had this car as a rental for a couple of weeks now, put 1500 miles on a LT model. With 59k miles, it's not aging well. The left side of the bottom seat cushion is sinking in by the hard plastic trim, and the seats have cheap, thin cushion found in economy cars. The carpet is pulling up by the driver's side door sill. Pairing my Android phone was very easy, as well as customizing vehicle features to my liking. It does have a fairly comfortable ride (Altima and Camry are softer, Accord is firmer), gets 32mpgs mixed driving, the CVT is smooth and responsive without the jerky "faux shifting" that made me dislike the Nissan Altima rental I had before (loved everything else with that car). The stupid stop/start feature is the WORST one I've ever experienced by far, it's a lurching and jerky ordeal that prompts me to turn it off every time I start the car. The 5amp fuse for the tail lights burned out for no reason, makes me concerned about electrical issues, at least it's not my car, lol. For the price of the Malibu, there's much better choices for a large sedan, I would doubt these are reliable cars to own. GM needs to step up the game and start over with a whole new design if they want to continue selling the Malibu to consumers and not fleets.
