What Problems Does the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu has had some frequently reported problems. Several owners have complained about issues with the infotainment system, including freezing, lagging, and difficulty connecting to smartphones. Transmission problems, such as harsh shifting or complete failure, have also been reported, particularly with the 6-speed automatic transmission. Some electrical issues, including problems with the battery and various sensors, have surfaced as well.
Recalls for the 2016 Malibu have addressed issues like seatbelt cable separation, which could increase the risk of injury in a crash, and potential brake light malfunction. Long-term reliability concerns mainly revolve around the aforementioned transmission and infotainment issues. It is recommended to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls and to have a thorough inspection performed by a qualified mechanic before purchasing, paying close attention to the transmission's condition and the functionality of all electronic systems.

How long will the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu last?

With good maintenance habits, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu can easily reach 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Proper oil changes, timely transmission fluid replacements, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability can be affected by the transmission issues mentioned previously, as well as potential wear and tear on suspension components. The infotainment system's longevity can also be a concern. Rust can become a factor in regions with harsh winters.

Positive Owner Reviews
Country music fan.
The Malibu is a great highway or local roads car. It is so safe and comfortable. Interior is very nice and comperable to higher priced cars.
Lindsey
I keep getting error messages when my car is already in park stating that I need to shift to park to turn off my car. Apparently this is a common issue for this model and there should be a recall.
Crystal Carter
I think this is the best vehicle I ever owned. It is very roomy. It fits my needs. I love the body style and color of the vehicle.

This was the most expensive and the worst car I ever owned. Shift to Park problem, engine power reduced, leaking trunk, mold growing inside car, infotainment system failure. In less than 3 years I experienced all of these problems. The infotainment system and the shift to park problem happened more than once. GM won't acknowledge these known issues. Their mechanics are a joke. The service manager had an attitude and expected me to be without my car for more than a week before he would look at it although it was under warranty and he refused to issue me a loaner vehicle. As a result of the endless stress of owning this xxx, I sold the car and bought a much older Acura that at least is reliable. Stay away from all GM vehicles.

Literally the worst car I have owned EVER. I despise this car with every fiber in me with the problems it gives. If it’s not one problem it’s another. The entire time I had this car I was afraid of driving it. Due to me not being rich I couldn’t get rid of the car right away but I’m finally getting rid of this xxx and I feel like a million pounds being lifted off my shoulders. Here are only some problems I had to deal with. Assistant steering always turns off, bad oil leak, over heating due to broken gasket, leaking trunk, when I shift to R it’s very bad can’t quite describe it but the whole car shakes, and it completely turned off as I was going up a hill with cars behind me!!! Def ONE of the MANy times I had a break down (crying) with this car.

BEWARE!!!! i purchase a used 2016 vehicle from this dealership on 09/05 and it was by far the worse experience every. I was sold this vehicle while it was in the middle of its inspection, to have it break down on me 35 days later. After going back and forth with the service team about the warranty I had, I mysteriously had a special warranty that covered it after being told I had to pay $400 to fix it. Remind you it had only been 4 1/2 weeks since I bought it, and hadn't even made one car payment on the vehicle. This past Friday, 11/01 it broke down on me AGAIN!! And was told by the service team that it would cost me over $1000 to fix it, and my warranty I have doesn't cover it . There OWN Salesman Al even mention to me in a phone conversation on 11/02 that he was convinced my car was a LEMON when it was sold to me. To have him say that and them completely ignore it is horrible. So it was towed to them from my home and was told by Al to come into the dealership yesterday and he'd help me get into another car. Get there , he wasn't there, spent 5 hrs in this place, missed a whole day of work and two hours of driving for them to tell me there was nothing they can do to help me. Sold me this car with preexisting issues is against the law whether it was used/as is or not. Within 60 days this car has broken down on me twice and now I'm left with nothing AND a car payment. This isn't right at all and I hope no one else gets trapped into the big whoha of how popular they are SUPPOSE to be, they used that against people, and I'll make sure this goes way beyond just a review.

When new, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu ranged from approximately $22,500 to $31,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2023, used market prices generally range from $10,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Malibu has experienced moderate depreciation. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and trim level, with the Premier trim generally holding its value better due to its features and more powerful engine. 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu competes with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, and Hyundai Sonata. In terms of performance, the Malibu's 2.0L turbo engine offers competitive acceleration, but the base engine can feel lacking compared to rivals. Feature-wise, it offers comparable tech and safety options. Reliability is where the Malibu falls slightly behind the Accord and Camry, due to the aforementioned transmission and infotainment issues. Price-wise, it's generally competitive.
Alternatives to consider are the Honda Accord, known for its reliability and resale value; the Toyota Camry, praised for its dependability and comfortable ride; and the Ford Fusion, which offers a more engaging driving experience and available all-wheel drive. The Hyundai Sonata provides excellent value with its long warranty and features. If reliability is a top priority, the Accord or Camry are better choices. If you prioritize style and value, the Malibu is worth considering, but a thorough inspection is recommended.

Ranks #2 RV

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is ideal for budget-conscious buyers looking for a stylish and fuel-efficient mid-size sedan. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if thoroughly inspected for transmission and infotainment issues. Opting for the 2LT or Premier trim provides more desirable features and the stronger 2.0L engine. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to ensure long-term reliability. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, but the Malibu offers a compelling package for the right buyer.

GASOLINE SENSOR MAlFUNCTION

My engine light is on when my gas tank is not full because of the fuel sensor . It just hit the 5 year mark! 78k miles. Chevy wants 180.00 to look at it! This also happened to my last Malibu! My 2005 had the same problem!

The 2016 Chevy Malibu isnt a good choice vehicle

I got this car back in 2016 by 17-18 I was already taking it to the shop and I have spent a lot of money on this car. Then the mechanic tells me that the car's with the turbos on them your motor want last to 150k to 200k the engine will malfunction. I paid the car off about a month later the engine went out. And I took my car to get serviced everytime it was time to and look what that got me I feel like Chevy or GM should be held responsible for that because they should know about what the turbos do to there motors

Very Solid Purchase

I purchased my Malibu LT (1.5L) new in August 2016 and have absolutely loved it ever since. It has a quiet and refined ride, roomy interior with ample leg room for rear seat passengers, power adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, clear and easy-to-use infotainment system, fold-down rear seats, and some nice ambient interior lighting. While the 1.5L turbo engine won’t win a drag race, it’s still peppy enough to allow confident expressway entrances, and fuel economy is excellent for a 5-passenger sedan. Typically, with combined city/highway driving, I’ll see an average of 34 mpg (low of 24 to high of 44+). Driving at 50-55 mph on our flat So. Florida expressways will easily get 45+ mpg, while cruising at 70-75 will still get in the high 30's. The 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes are good and inspire confidence. At 108,700 miles, aside from regular oil changes, I’ve replaced the battery twice, replaced a tail brake light bulb (warranty), had a cooling system flush, a fuel system/throttle body repair ($200+), and got a new set of tires. I’ve only been stranded 3 times (flat tire from expressway debris, and twice with dead battery) over 6+ years of ownership, so reliability gets high marks. This car is ubiquitous for a reason – it’s a very solid purchase.

You will regret it

Solid Car.

Solid American transportation. Good fuel economy and enough room. Treats me quite well and I'm very happy with my purchase. I even went ahead and got an extended warranty.

I See A lot of Repairs In Your Future

I purchased my 1.5L Chevy Malibu in July of 2016 with 54 miles on it. I absolutely love the look and feel of the car but unfortunately I haven’t been impressed. I’ve always taken care of the required maintenance on my vehicle and seemed to have issues. At 15k miles the rear suspension knuckle was causing a popping sound when accelerating after a stop that took multiple times in the shop for them to figure out. Some where between 15k and 52k miles I had the shift to park issue in which they had to replace the shifter/sensor. At 52k miles the transmission would slip upon accelerating. Took it into the dealership and they did a flush and reprogrammed the computer and it has been fine since. At 54k miles I was driving down the freeway and the car went into limp mode and threw a check engine light. Was able to get to work that day and planned to take it after but had a close call when it went into limp mode after accelerating from a stop sign nearly causing an accident. The dealership diagnosed this as a bad pedal position sensor and they had no idea when it would be in stock since it was after the strike. They refused to put me in a loaner vehicle although it was a safety issue. Called a dealership in a small town and they were able to order it and install it within 3 days. At 68k miles the headliner and trunk started leaking and had to take it to the dealership to get it repaired. Two weeks ago at 78k I noticed a small oil leak on my garage floor. Took it into the dealership to find that it is a bad head gasket and upper oil pan gasket. They wanted 3700$ for the repair. After talking to the CEM they were able to get it down to 1100$. It’s currently in the shop being repaired and then after that I’m selling it and getting something else. Haven’t been too impressed with GM and most likely won’t ever own one ever again. 2016 was the first year that GM’s power train warranty went from 100k to 60k miles so repairs such as this head gasket would’ve been covered.
