What Problems Does the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu include issues with the electronic stability control system and the automatic emergency braking system, which have led to recalls. Some owners have also reported problems with the infotainment system freezing or malfunctioning. Transmission issues, particularly with the CVT paired with the 1.5L engine, have been noted, with some owners experiencing jerky shifting or premature failure. Certain model years, including the 2016-2018 models (although related to the same generation as the 2019), had recalls related to the brake system, so it's worth checking the VIN for any open recalls even on the 2019 model. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the potential for engine issues, particularly the turbocharger on the 1.5L engine, and the longevity of the CVT transmission. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is crucial to mitigating these potential problems. Check for any service records to ensure the vehicle has been properly maintained. The 2019 Malibu hasn't seen widespread major issues, but pre-purchase inspection is advisable.

How long will the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu last?

Based on owner data and typical maintenance habits, a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu can reasonably be expected to last 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years with proper care. Long-term durability can be affected by the frequency of oil changes and transmission fluid services. Weaknesses over time often include wear and tear on suspension components, potential for turbocharger issues on the 1.5L engine, and potential CVT transmission problems if not properly maintained. Rust can also be a factor in regions with harsh winters and road salt use. Regular inspections and addressing minor issues promptly can significantly extend the vehicle’s lifespan.

Terez Porter was the best salesman who promised and delivered A1 service from beginning to end. Kind courteous and patient. He answered all of our questions. Wonderful experience. I would recommend this place a thousand times over!! We enjoyed working with Terez Porter and Eric Duncan. They were very professional, and patient, and took care of all our questions/concerns. I highly recommend Hendrick Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and FIAT of Concord!!!

Buyer beware, these 1st gen CVT malibus have PROBLEMS. I purchased this car in 2020, to replace my old car, as I needed more space. What originally seemed like a great deal has turned into a nightmare. I purchased the car with 22k miles on it, and the transmission went out at 40k. I got the transmission warranty replaced, which took 2 months, just for it to fail again at 81k miles. Warranty replaced again, and it's slipping again at 90k. Transmission issues aside, it's not a terrible car. If you like the way these cars look, look at buying a 2016-2018 instead, as they have far less major mechanical problems.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu competes with popular mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Hyundai Sonata. In terms of performance, the Camry and Accord often offer slightly more engaging driving dynamics. The Malibu's 2.0L turbo engine provides decent power but isn't class-leading. Feature-wise, the Malibu is competitive, especially in higher trims, but some rivals offer more advanced technology or standard features. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Camry and Accord generally have better reliability reputations. The Malibu often undercuts rivals in price, making it a strong value proposition.

Alternatives to consider:
  • Toyota Camry: Known for its reliability and resale value.
  • Honda Accord: Offers a sportier driving experience and a well-rounded package.
  • Hyundai Sonata: Stylish design and a long warranty.

The Malibu offers a compelling blend of comfort and affordability. However, buyers prioritizing reliability or a more engaging driving experience may prefer the Camry or Accord. The Sonata is a good alternative for value and style.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Sedan?

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a comfortable and spacious mid-size sedan with decent fuel economy. It's worth buying as a used vehicle, especially if you can find a well-maintained LT or Premier trim. These trims offer more features and added comfort. Be sure to get a pre-purchase inspection, particularly focusing on the CVT transmission (if equipped with the 1.5L engine) and check for any outstanding recalls. If reliability is your top priority, consider alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. However, the Malibu can be a good choice for those prioritizing value and comfort.

Great Economy vehicle and spacious.

I bought my leased Malibu back in 2021 and haven't had a problem with it since then. A few things to know. I used to drive to another state for work every day. Now I only drive about an average of 6-7 miles daily. This, car for what I intended, has been good to me. I work in a chevy service department and see it all. If you're the type that is looking for your car to share some characteristics of vehicles like BMW, don't bother buying this. The CVT has a bulletin from GM that says trans may feel like it's slipping, you may feel hesitations in trans, and a list of other hard to swallow symptoms, but it's ok. The CVT is functioning normally and improve fuel economy these symtoms may appear but it is not a problem. I have had many people overreact and bring the vehicle to me after someone they paid to replace their transmission messed up. It worked fine for a bit but now the car is compromised. I almost overreacted too, but once you get used to the car you realize you're fine. If you believe there's an issue someone out there will take your money to "fix" your problem. My thoughts, it's a good car. I stay on top of my oil changes and recommended maintenance. My only regret is I need all wheel drive where I'm moving and may need to replace it.
