The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan, part of the ninth generation of the Malibu line (2016-present). Key trims include L, LS, 1LT, 2LT, and Premier. Known for its comfortable ride and spacious interior, the Malibu offers a blend of practicality and style. Pricing ranged from approximately $22,555 to $31,850 when new. Its available hybrid powertrain and user-friendly technology make it popular with a wide range of buyers.
The Good

The 2018 Malibu offers a comfortable and quiet ride, appealing to those prioritizing comfort. Its fuel-efficient engine options and reasonable price make it a practical choice. The redesigned exterior provides a stylish look, while the available technology features cater to the desire for modern convenience and connectivity. Reliable engines offer piece of mind.

The Bad

Some common complaints for the 2018 Malibu involve the transmission, particularly rough shifting in some models. The base engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. What Problems Does the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu has faced a few frequently reported issues. One common concern revolves around the 8-speed automatic transmission, particularly in models equipped with the 2.0L turbo engine. Some owners report rough shifting, hesitation, and occasional hard shifts. Software updates have been released to address these concerns, but results vary.
Another area of concern involves the electronic stability control system. There have been reports of issues with the system malfunctioning or triggering erroneously. The engine start-stop system, designed to improve fuel economy, has also been a source of complaints, with some owners experiencing rough restarts or system failures.
Recalls for the 2018 Malibu have included issues related to the power steering assist, which could potentially lead to a loss of steering control. Additionally, some vehicles were recalled for potential fuel leaks due to faulty fuel injectors. Long-term reliability data suggests that the Malibu, while generally decent, can experience issues with its electrical system and drivetrain over time. Checking the vehicle history report for recall completion and addressing any reported issues is crucial before purchasing a used 2018 Malibu.

How long will the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles, or 10 to 13 years of service. However, reaching these milestones heavily depends on consistent upkeep. Regular oil changes, timely fluid replacements, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly are critical. Weaknesses can emerge over time, including potential transmission issues (especially with the 8-speed automatic), gradual wear and tear on suspension components, and potential for increased oil consumption in higher-mileage engines. Careful monitoring and preventative maintenance are key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

Over the years I have driven different cars. I had Malibus in 1974, 1977 and came back to the Malibu in 2014 and now have a 2018. It is my favorite car and is just the right size for me and family members. Drives nice and is good on gas. I get compliments on my 2018 model. I call myself malibu Man.

My Malibu Premier is a nice designed car with good styling, performance. The 2.0 L so far runs terrific. No issues with the park drive errors. I am not letting a marginally designed micro switch to crater how nice the cars is. I lived my Cruze also. My last Chevelle was a 1967 SS 396. That turned some heads. I have always bought GM and will continue. My best GM purchase was a 2005 GMC Sierra extended cab with the 5.3 engine. I still have it and is in great shape. The LS 1 series is one of the best engines ever built.

This is by far the worst vehicle I've purchased, the 2015 was much better. I will not buy from or have work done from OBX Chevrolet ever again!! Done with chevrolet !!!
Wasted money
Afraid of it, last night while on the freeway I kept smelling something burning, I was smelling it for a long time , until my sister told me to get off the freeway at which I had difficulty accelerating
Malibu Junk
I have a 2018 Malibu it has two major problems the put in park light stays on when the car is off even though the car lever is in park. The power assist shuts of down power to car and you have to pull over and shut the car off for a few minutes before you can get full power.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu offers a solid suite of tech and safety features. Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation. Entertainment options include satellite radio and a premium Bose audio system.
Driver-assistance features vary by trim. Available options include: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision alert, and automatic emergency braking. These features enhance safety and convenience, making driving easier and reducing the risk of accidents.
Safety features include a standard rearview camera and multiple airbags. The 2018 Malibu performed well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the 2018 Malibu a "Top Safety Pick" rating when equipped with optional front crash prevention. These ratings demonstrate the Malibu's commitment to safety and provide peace of mind for drivers and passengers.

2018 Chevrolet Malibu Prices and Market Value

The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu had a starting MSRP of around $22,555 for the base L trim, climbing to approximately $31,850 for the top-tier Premier trim when new. As of late 2023, used market prices range from approximately $12,000 to $20,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Malibu has experienced moderate depreciation. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (accident history, maintenance records), trim level (Premier trims hold value better), and overall market demand for mid-size sedans. Color and optional features can also slightly influence resale price.

2018 Chevrolet Malibu Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu generally offers reasonable ownership costs. Insurance rates are typically moderate for a mid-size sedan. Fuel economy is a strong point, especially with the 1.5L turbo engine or the hybrid variant. Routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations) is affordable. However, potential transmission issues and other repairs could increase costs over time. Overall, the 2018 Malibu can be considered an economical car to own, especially if well-maintained and major repairs are avoided.

How Does the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu competes in the mid-size sedan segment against rivals like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima. In terms of performance, the Camry and Accord generally offer more engaging driving experiences, while the Malibu's base engine can feel underpowered compared to some competitors. Feature-wise, the Malibu is competitive, offering a user-friendly infotainment system and available advanced safety features.
Reliability is where the Malibu faces a tougher challenge. The Camry and Accord consistently score higher in reliability ratings. The Fusion offers a similar level of reliability, while the Altima's reliability is comparable to the Malibu's. Price-wise, the Malibu is often competitively priced, potentially offering a better value proposition than some rivals.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry for its excellent reliability and resale value, the Honda Accord for its sporty handling and spacious interior, and the Mazda 6 for its stylish design and refined driving experience. If reliability is a top priority, the Camry or Accord are generally better choices. However, if price and features are the main considerations, the Malibu could be a worthwhile option, especially if found in good condition with a thorough maintenance history.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Sedan?

The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu is a decent mid-size sedan suitable for budget-conscious buyers seeking a comfortable ride and user-friendly technology. It's worth considering if you prioritize value and don't need the absolute best performance or reliability. A used 2018 Malibu can be a good option, especially if thoroughly inspected and maintenance records are available. Opting for a trim with the 1.5L turbo engine or the hybrid version can enhance fuel efficiency. However, be mindful of potential transmission issues and factor in potential repair costs. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.

I have had a 2018 Malibu for 3 years.

I have had a 2018 Malibu for 3 years. I’m trying to keep it as long as I can to get my money out of it but I will not buy another one. The auto shut-off is annoying and no way to turn it off, but you get used to it. Like mentioned above, the “Engine power reduced” happens a lot until you get it fixed. It will go into limp mode and is dangerous when driving and impedes acceleration drastically. It turned out replacing the pedal fixed this issue but fact of the matter is, there should be a recall on this and there’s not apparently. GM doesn’t care it seems. After about 100k miles, I had another issue with VVT solenoid actuators which also made it go into a limp mode but not as severe. I fixed this as well with no further issues. Car seems to be running fine now but had to jump thru some hoops to get here. Also, experienced the issue with shifting into park not being recognized by the computer. There’s a popping noise coming from the rear end somewhere I have yet to find out what that is…On the pro side of this car, they look nice, interiors not too bad. Seems to get pretty great MPG. I like the stereo and the room and comfort isn’t bad for a small family. Drives and rides good and pretty comfortable to drive around. Not a whole lot that any other car can’t do really. Overall, I’d stay away and try something else really.

My experience with GM has been disappointing. For Starters my engine ihas failed and I only have 82, 000 miles on the vehicle. The power tran warranty ended at 60,000 miles. Even though there have been several recalls on this particular vehicle the company isn't being helpful and never notified me

My 2018 Chevrolet Malibu LT power train went out with less than 3300 miles. I bought this car brand new . The dependability is most certainly in question. .

The 2018 Chevy Malibu, excellent vehicle! Love it!

I have owned BMW, Jeep, and GMC, I decided I didn't want to pay $60,000 plus for a vehicle anymore, I'm over it, lol, so I bought a 2018 Malibu Redline and I have to say...hands down my favorite vehicle I've ever owned! I constantly get compliments when I'm at the gas station on what a great looking car it is. I have the Redline pkg and blacked out the windows, it does look great! I love all the extras they put in the Malibu, drive asst, backup cameras, info center....etc. I have never had a problem, it's never let me down! A simple recall, easy fix, is all. This car is so comfortable, we travel a lot! I would highly recommend this vehicle!

WARNING: LOSS OF POWER RISK FOR ACCIDENT

Many issues with this car. Filling car with gas takes forever. Gas flow has to be very slow even then fuel handle will still pop off very annoying. Check engine light on after 15,000 miles taken in to Chevy and 1 mile down the road check engine light back on again, engine power reduced light turns on often sometimes reduced power happens & sometimes it doesn't. 2 of the times power was reduced it nearly caused a very tragic accident 1 time barely missed a t-bone collision on side where my 9 year old was sitting. Most fearful moment in my life. On 2 occasions I was locked out of vehicle doors would not unlock. After a few hours the car unlocked the doors on its own. I live in Yuma temp reaches 120 & higher. Being locked out of car for no reason was horrible. Occurs randomly sometimes it often sometimes its once in a while car won't register its in park. Shifter is in park but it doesn't register so car will not turn off. Its very annoying. Also has glitches with the electric system phone connecting etc. I use to be able to tell the car to call a contact but that feature no longer works. My dome light only works if i use the switch. It no longer turns on when door is open. It sucks trying too gather all your things when getting out of car at night. I tried everything to get the dome light to work when door is open been unsuccessful. 5 times car has just shut off. 4 out of the 5 times it stalled when I went to accelerate when light turned green. Then it takes about 10 seconds or more to start back up again. Also sometimes gas mileage is good then sometimes its not and sucks it down fast. Interior may look nice but the quality of it is very poor. All the silver lining is made out of a thin plastic & starts to chip away after a couple years. Looks like crap. Car is hard to get out of. Visibility is poor. Car has blind spots all around you. I have read numerous reviews from many owners complaining about the issues above. Do not purchase a 2018 Chevy Malibu you will live to regret it. Any good reviews you read are most likely from owners that hadn't had the car for very long. The car is a mess and Chevy doesn't care. Most important THE REDUCED POWER ISSUE VERY DANGEROUS. YOU ARE AT RISK FOR A DEADLY ACCIDENT!!!
