Rating: 4.03
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025

The 2010 Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan, part of the seventh generation (2008-2012). It offers a comfortable and spacious interior, making it a popular choice for families and commuters. Key trims include the LS, LT, and LTZ. New, the pricing ranged roughly from $22,000 to $27,000. The Malibu stands out for its refined ride quality and relatively quiet cabin compared to some competitors. It was a strong contender in the crowded mid-size segment.

The Good

The 2010 Malibu offers a comfortable ride and a stylish, well-designed interior (appealing to emotional buyers). It's also known for its decent fuel efficiency and solid reliability for its age. Practical buyers will appreciate its spacious cabin, good value for money, and reputation as a dependable family sedan. Performance is adequate for daily driving.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2010 Malibu include potential issues with the transmission, particularly with the 4-speed automatic. Owners should watch out for electrical problems, such as issues with the power windows and door locks. Some models have also reported problems with the electronic power steering. What Problems Does the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu include transmission issues, particularly with the 4-speed automatic transmission found in some models. Owners have reported rough shifting, slipping, and premature failure. Electrical problems are also relatively common, with issues reported regarding power windows, door locks, and the car's computer system. Some drivers have mentioned issues with the electronic power steering, leading to a loss of power steering assist. Premature brake wear is another concern noted by some owners.

Recalls for the 2010 Malibu have included concerns related to the ignition switch (part of a larger GM recall affecting multiple models), which could cause the engine to stall and disable safety features like airbags. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the aforementioned transmission and electrical issues. Regular maintenance and careful inspection before purchase are crucial to mitigate these potential problems. While the 2010 model year isn't significantly worse than other years in the seventh generation, these issues are persistent across the generation.

How long will the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu last?

With good maintenance, a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu can realistically last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 12-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance habits. Owners who diligently perform oil changes, transmission services, and address repairs promptly will see a longer lifespan. Weaknesses over time often involve the aforementioned transmission issues and electrical problems. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters. Neglecting these issues will significantly shorten the car's lifespan.

Negative Owner Reviews
Worst car ever
Junk the worst car I have ever had never again chevy is best vehicle ever but the 2010 Malibu is junk everyone should get a replacement
Jo76fraz
This car is a nightmare. I've had it almost 3 years now and there's not a day that I don't regret it. Money pit. Poor wiring design. Gm won't fix what they already should have. Working people need dependable cars. There should be a class action lawsuit for this car. I'm not sure why there isn't already.
Sick of Chevys
This car is a piece of junk. Everything electrical goes wrong with it and is expensive to fix. NO dash lights. Blinkers quit. Rear brake light went out. the car has 75,000 miles on it. That is not a wore out car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Chevrolet Malibu offers a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include a basic AM/FM radio with CD player, auxiliary input jack, and air conditioning. Higher trims (LT and LTZ) add features like steering wheel audio controls, upgraded audio systems (Bose in some models), and remote start.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Cruise control was standard, but advanced features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, and a full complement of airbags (front, side, and curtain). Optional features included a sunroof and leather upholstery on higher trims.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally positive for the 2010 Malibu. It typically earned good overall scores, making it a relatively safe choice in its class. However, it's always recommended to check specific ratings for the model year and trim level on the NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most accurate information.

2010 Chevrolet Malibu Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu had an MSRP ranging from approximately $22,000 to $27,000 depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Malibu has experienced significant depreciation, as expected for a mid-size sedan of this age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, overall condition (especially concerning rust and mechanical issues), maintenance records, and trim level (LTZ models generally hold slightly more value). Clean title history is also crucial.

2010 Chevrolet Malibu Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Chevrolet Malibu is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance costs are average, but potential transmission and electrical repairs can increase expenses. Regular maintenance is critical to avoid costly repairs down the line. Overall, it's a relatively affordable vehicle to own, provided potential issues are addressed proactively.

2010 Chevrolet Malibu Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 Chevrolet Malibu competed with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima. In terms of performance, the Camry and Accord offered slightly more refined powertrains and better handling. Feature-wise, the Malibu was generally comparable, though some rivals offered more advanced technology options. Reliability is where the Malibu sometimes lagged behind the Camry and Accord, particularly concerning the transmission. Price-wise, the Malibu was often more affordable than the Camry and Accord, making it a value proposition.

The Ford Fusion offers a similar blend of value and features with arguably better styling and, in some trims, available all-wheel drive. The Nissan Altima provides a sportier driving experience but may have its own reliability concerns. Considering the age of these vehicles, a well-maintained Toyota Camry or Honda Accord might be a slightly better option for long-term reliability, but the Malibu offers a compelling alternative for budget-conscious buyers willing to accept potentially higher maintenance needs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Sedan?

The 2010 Chevrolet Malibu is ideal for budget-minded buyers seeking a comfortable and spacious mid-size sedan. It's worth buying *used* if you find one in good condition with a clean maintenance history and low mileage. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended, especially to check for transmission and electrical issues. The LT or LTZ trims offer more features, but the LS can be a good value if well-maintained. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Camry or Accord. However, the Malibu can be a solid choice for daily commuting and family use with proper care.

2010 Chevy LT xxx

This is the car that should have been recalled and junked. From the transmission failing 2x (crap design) to the BCM recall (issue keeps happening) the radio shorting out 2x and the nightmare to change the headlights. GM (Chevy) you screwed your customers over and as a big American corporation, you got away with it. May your company fail and someone that cares take your place. You only cost people more money with this poor design. I would use curse words but their isn't one that defines how pathetic your product and you are.

Pretty car, but….

I bought this car used 2 years ago and mechanically its fine, ive had no problems at all. I have the 2LT so the trim package caught my eye. Pretty chrome rims, sunroof, nice microfiber/vinyl interior, heated seats, satellite radio. The only things i dont like is that the turning radius is huge, it drives like a big car, so tight turns/u turns are difficult. Another thing, the cupholders in front. Whoever designed that should be fired. We are coffee drinkers, and cupholders are so close together its hard to fit 2 cups in there at the same time, plus the cupholder is wedged under the edge of the center console, so when we have 2 cups in there, i have to move my cup so they can pull theirs out. What were the designers thinking?! Other than that, i love it. I think its a pretty car.

Best Car I have ever owned!

I purchased this car with around 42,000 miles and it now has over 173,000. Other than regular maintenance, just presently replace passenger side front control arm and rear coil spring. Only had defective ball joint but with this vehicle the whole arm needs to replaced. The only complaint I have had with this car is the front bumper cover needs to come off to replace the headlight halogen bulb. This car is going strong take no oil leaks nowhere. Personally I would not be surprised if this car makes 300,000 plus.

Car Has A lot of Issues

Car Has A lot of Issues. Very Expensive to Keep up With or Even Due Some of the Maintenance and Buy Parts For. Lots of Problems With Lights and Electric Issues. Inside Part of Dashboard is Melting from the Heat of the Sun and Detaching now From the Main Part of Dashboard. Also Another Part of the Molding Inside Close to Windshield is Also Melting due to Heat. Really Starting to Look Bad. Like the Way Car Looks and Drives in the Snow. I’ve Tried Many Times to Get The Recall Things Fixed But Nothing Has Been Done. Would “NOT” Buy This Car Again or Maybe Even Chevy Again Due to The Way I’ve Been Treated By Them. This Car is a Nightmare!!!!

Looks good but has lots of issues

This car looks really good. Great exterior and interior. But the issues that comes along with it makes me want to buy a different type of car.
