The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan, part of the seventh generation (2008-2012) of the Malibu. It offers a comfortable ride and a spacious interior. Key trims include the LS, LT, and LTZ. When new, the pricing ranged approximately from $22,000 to $27,000. The Malibu's sleek design and spacious interior attracted buyers looking for both style and functionality. It provided great value for its price, balancing features and affordability. Reliability was generally good.

The Bad

Some common weaknesses of the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu include potential issues with the transmission, particularly with rough shifting. The electrical system can also be prone to glitches. What Problems Does the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu has a few frequently reported problems. One common issue is with the transmission, where owners have reported rough shifting and hesitation. This can sometimes be addressed with software updates, but in some cases, it may require more extensive repairs. Another common complaint is excessive oil consumption, particularly in the 2.4L Ecotec engine. Owners should monitor their oil levels regularly.
There have been reports of electrical issues, including problems with the power windows, locks, and the car's computer system. Power steering failure has also been documented.
Recalls for the 2011 Malibu have included issues related to the transmission shift cable, which could potentially disengage, leading to a loss of gear selection. Owners should check the NHTSA website to ensure any recall work has been performed.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, especially with higher mileage models. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission servicing, is crucial to mitigate potential problems. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system over time. Overall, while the Malibu can be a dependable car, being aware of these potential issues is important for prospective buyers.

How long will the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu last?

With proper maintenance, a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners have reported getting 10-15 years of service out of their Malibus, assuming regular oil changes, timely servicing of the transmission, and addressing any issues promptly. However, weaknesses such as the aforementioned transmission issues, oil consumption, and electrical glitches can shorten the lifespan if not properly addressed. Rust can become a factor in colder climates. Long-term durability largely depends on how well the car was maintained by previous owners.

Bought used in 2013. Now has 302000 miles and runs fantastic. Original engine and transmission. Replace various parts here and there of course but best car I've ever owned.

Exceed my expectations, big room, good value for your money and good in gas 4 cylinder engine. Highly recommend this car. Common sense - change oil every 3000 miles

My Malibu has been nothing but worthless. I have been dumping money left and right and the thing still doesn't stay going longer than a day or 2 but now some esc crap came on and now it's a threat to drive and I don't have the money to go buy another car right now!!

2011 Chevy Malibu 2.4 liter. Last two headlights $110 apiece. Have to pull the bumper to change. Two water pumps installed. Pump attached to timing chain instead of belt. Money saving for gm. More complicated to repair. Actually have black tape on inside door handle because cut my finger opening door. Carry bandages.Power steering not hydraulic, electrically assisted. Had chip replaced three times. Once actually paid for by gm under recall. Quoted $1700 by Chevy dealer on ford rd in g,c Michigan. My guy, master mechanic fixed for $430. I actually once bought a car from g..c mi dealer. Gm people don’t like me. I don’t like them either. Gas mileage overall lucky to get 20 miles per gallon. Replaced 3 out of 4 tpms sensors. $78 out the door at tire store. Mechanic actually suggested I get a job there since this car is in the shop so often. Can’t check trans fluid, it’s a sealed system. Bought a spare tire donut since no spare came with car. Came off a Saturn aura, came in handy. Rim got cracked from potholes. Alunumim rims don’t hold up against potholes. Bought a tire and rim from junkyard and replaced, lackluster acelertion and well as gas mileage. Take it slow off the line so trans can survive, seat belt broke was recalled and fixed by dealer. Local dealer hates me because I only go in for warranty service, less profitable for them. Second gm car for me. Should I try for a third? Ahh let me think! I am stupid. Third time? Hopefully not. Emphatic NO. If trans blows I will admit defeat. This car was a learning experience. Oil changes $50:to 70, of course in 2011 gm switched to synthetic oil so more costly to change. Of course sun roof leaked. Easy fix though.

I bought this car with 98,000 miles on it. I had to put front struts and sway bar links on it. Then around 105,000 the power steering had to be replaced and an exhaust leak fixed. At around 110,000 the timing chain and guides had to be replaced. Around that same time the transmission started having issues going into "overdrive" too soon. Then at 116,000 while driving the car suddenly started missing and the check engine light came on it. Major internal engine damage was found and it needed a new engine. This was the most expensive car I ever owned.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu offers a decent array of tech, entertainment, and safety features for its time. Standard features include a six-speaker audio system with an AM/FM radio and CD player. Higher trims (LT and LTZ) offered features such as steering wheel-mounted audio controls and optional Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling.
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern vehicles. It included standard features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control.
Safety features include front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for both rows of seats.
Optional features, depending on the trim level, could include remote start, heated front seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Navigation was available as an option on some higher trims.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) generally show good performance, with the 2011 Malibu earning a "Good" rating in several crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also awarded the Malibu good overall safety ratings. It is important to verify specific ratings on the IIHS and NHTSA websites for this model year as ratings can change. It lacked some of the more advanced features available in newer cars such as lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring.

2011 Chevrolet Malibu Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu ranged from approximately $22,000 for the base LS trim to around $27,000 for the fully loaded LTZ. As a used vehicle, prices now typically range from $4,000 to $9,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.
The Malibu has depreciated significantly, which is typical for sedans in this class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the overall demand for used sedans. Lower mileage, a clean title, and documented maintenance history will command a higher price. The LTZ trim generally holds its value slightly better due to its more desirable features.

2011 Chevrolet Malibu Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, particularly with the 2.4L engine. Maintenance costs are also generally average, with readily available parts and straightforward repairs. However, potential transmission issues and oil consumption could lead to higher repair bills. Regular maintenance is key to keeping long-term ownership costs down. Overall, it presents an affordable option for budget-conscious buyers.

2011 Chevrolet Malibu Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu competes with mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima. In terms of reliability, the Camry and Accord generally have a better reputation. The Malibu's performance is adequate, but the Fusion and Altima offer more engaging driving experiences. Feature-wise, the Malibu is competitive, but some rivals offer more advanced tech features.
In terms of price, the Malibu typically offers a slightly lower entry point, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
Alternatives to the Malibu include:
  • Toyota Camry: Known for its reliability and longevity.
  • Honda Accord: Offers a good balance of performance, reliability, and features.
  • Ford Fusion: Provides a more stylish design and a more engaging driving experience.
  • Nissan Altima: Offers a comfortable ride and a spacious interior.
If reliability is a top priority, the Camry or Accord would be better choices. If you prefer a sportier driving experience, the Fusion or Altima might be more appealing. If budget is a primary concern, the Malibu remains a competitive option. If similar value is desired with enhanced features, a well-maintained Ford Fusion of the same year might be considered.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu is a solid choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a comfortable and reasonably fuel-efficient mid-size sedan. It's ideal for commuters and small families who prioritize affordability over cutting-edge technology or sporty handling. It's worth buying as a used car, especially if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history. Look for LT or LTZ trims for added features. Be sure to have a mechanic inspect the car, paying close attention to the transmission and checking for oil leaks. Avoid models with a history of significant problems. If reliability is paramount, other alternatives might be more suitable.

Save your money! You will thank me later I promise

My 2011 Chevy Malibu is by far my worst vehicle purchase. At 87,000 miles transmission went out and cost $5,400 to be replaced then again at went out at 105,00 went out again and had to have the replaced transmission replaced thankfully it was still under warranty and didn't cost me. I have never had any transmission problems with any of my vehicles except this one so I know it's not a fault of mine but a major fault of the manufacturer. Vehicle has poor power performance went taking off so be careful before you pull off an interstate exit because it takes much longer to pick up and go in this car putting you in danger of being smashed by oncoming cars. It takes a ovet an hour to replce a headlight bulb due to the design of car and can cost up to $200 to have it done for you! The key fob worked for about a year and has never worked again. The interior is very very poorly made and very cheap. The cup holders are to close together to hold 2 cups at once and not deep enough to hold most large cups so only choice is to hold between your legs. The cup holders in the doors are completely useless as they are shallow and won't fit a cup only a soda can that sits at an angle and liquid gets everywhere while driving. The dash is made cheaply and fades quickly no amount of quality shine spray makes it look better its just dull and can not be revived. The middle console has a pull up accordion curtin type thing that covers the cup holders and it's by far the most flawed design ,all it does is catch dirt in the deep folds and it's useless and very ugly. Front seats are cheap quality and don't recommend sitting for long periods. The back seat is very small and uncomfortable. The ulpostery is the worst and any drop of liquid leaves large water mark and the whole seat needs cleaned because if you try to wipe it, it only makes it worse. When I drive down the road my locks will be locking up and down lock and unlocking by their self. Its so annoying, distracting and imbarassing! When parked if I hit my overhead interior lights my doors lock on their own. My rear speakers don't work but once in a while they kick on sometimes while driving sometimes while parked then go out again. The manufacturer should be ashamed for putting their name on such a poor quality vehicle because I am now Anti-Chevy and I will never waist my hard earned money on anything they offer again!

Avoid at all cost

This car's transmission is terrible, needed a rebuild at 80k. Power issues every couple months, steering included. Not a fun or great handling car. Noisy. After around 130k miles things just started failing one by one. After thousands spent on fixing this car over a couple years, the car finally sits with a dead engine at 200k miles. It is going to the junkyard. Absolutely worst experience I've had with a vehicle.

Very good vehicle

I bought a 2011 w/ 7k miles and now have 163k miles. Very few issues new water pump 5 years ago, 2 brake jobs, synthetic oil changes every 3k miles, replaced windshield wiper motor. Very good vehicle for the $. Buying slightly used saved me $7k.

Disposable car, substandard mpg and quality.

Best car

Bought used in 2013. Now has 302000 miles and runs fantastic. Original engine and transmission. Replace various parts here and there of course but best car I've ever owned.

Best American Car

Exceed my expectations, big room, good value for your money and good in gas 4 cylinder engine. Highly recommend this car. Common sense - change oil every 3000 miles

It seems to be a reliable car

This is has nearly 150,000 miles but it seems to have been cared for. It drives pretty good and I’m content and it can with a decent warranty that I paid for of course.
