Rating: 4.51
Based on 100 Owner Reviews â–¶
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan, part of the eighth generation (2013-2016) of the Malibu line. Key trims included the LS, LT, and LTZ. It was known for its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and respectable fuel economy. Its popularity stemmed from being a well-rounded family sedan that offered a good balance of features and affordability. New, it ranged approximately from $22,000 to $30,000.
The Good

The 2015 Malibu offers a comfortable and quiet ride, appealing to emotional buyers seeking a relaxed driving experience. Practically, it provides good fuel efficiency and a spacious interior, making it suitable for families. It strikes a good balance between affordability and features, offering strong value for money, and relatively decent reliability for its class.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2015 Malibu include a somewhat uninspired interior design and engine options that, while adequate, may not provide thrilling acceleration. Some owners have reported issues with the MyLink infotainment system and potential for excessive oil consumption in certain engines. It's essential to check for these issues during a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu include issues with the MyLink infotainment system, such as freezing, slow response times, and connectivity problems. Some owners have reported excessive oil consumption, particularly with the 2.5L engine, which can lead to engine damage if not monitored and addressed. Transmission issues, like rough shifting or hesitation, have also been noted, though less frequently.

Recalls for the 2015 Malibu have addressed concerns such as potential brake issues (vacuum pump) and problems with the seat-mounted airbags.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the aforementioned oil consumption and transmission problems. The electronic components, including sensors and the infotainment system, can also be points of failure as the vehicle ages. It's crucial to review the vehicle's maintenance history and conduct a thorough inspection before purchasing a used 2015 Malibu to check for any signs of these common issues. Checking for past recalls is also highly recommended.

How long will the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu last?

With regular maintenance, a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years. Proper oil changes, timely servicing of the transmission, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly are crucial for maximizing its lifespan. However, the longevity is heavily dependent on maintenance habits and driving conditions. The potential for oil consumption in the 2.5L engine and the reliability of the infotainment system are weaknesses that can impact long-term durability. Rust can also be a factor in regions with harsh winters.
Positive Owner Reviews

It's a great car for getting around town. Mine is used - but I did own one of these new. Not a luxury sedan by any stretch but a good, solid, nimble vehicle. Excellent fuel economy. Nice features for a middle of the run sedan. Spacious trunk. Excellent handling. Excellent visibility through windows. Blind spots are there but not horrific. Overall a really good value for the dollar with good overall quality.

Leg room is excellent, huge trunk capacity, tinted windows-locking lug nuts on the rims, leather seats, highway miles, brand new brakes, recent oil change-hate to sell it

This is my fav car. I have owned four Malibu vehicles. They’re reliable, smooth ride, tight wheel base, great a/c that doesnt pull power from your engine, six air bags. I feel safe and its a good looking car! Pearl color.

Broke down a few days after driven off dealer. Dealer fixed it some electrical problems. About a week after having some more electrical problems but dealer didn't fix this time.

I wish every day that I had not bought this car! Only three years in and the driver seat control has to be replaced to the tune of $600! The heat controls is miserable. And whenever you mention a concern or issue during service, the dealership either deny there is a problem or identify some expensive repair.
TJG
Numerous repairs to the hvac system on this car and fighting to get gm to honor the certified warranty has convinced me to buy a different brand in the future. I learned the hard way that GM Certified is just a marketing tool.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu offers a reasonable suite of tech and safety features for its time. The base LS trim includes Chevrolet MyLink with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker audio system. Higher trims like the LT and LTZ add features such as satellite radio, remote start, and optional navigation.

Driver-assistance features, while not as advanced as modern systems, include available blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning on higher trims. A rearview camera was also available.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a full complement of airbags. OnStar services were also available, providing automatic crash notification and emergency assistance.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally positive for the 2015 Malibu. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in most crash tests, and the NHTSA awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. Optional features included advanced safety packages that improved overall safety.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu ranged from approximately $22,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location.

The Malibu has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and the high volume of these cars produced. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has a clean title. The presence of desirable features like leather seats or a sunroof can also positively impact its resale value. High mileage and reported reliability issues contribute to faster depreciation.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate for a mid-size sedan. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 2.5L engine. Maintenance costs are average, but potential repairs related to oil consumption or transmission issues could increase long-term expenses. Routine maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, are affordable. However, unexpected repairs can make it more costly compared to some of its more reliable competitors.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu competes with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima. In terms of reliability, the Camry and Accord generally outperform the Malibu. The Fusion offers a more stylish design and engaging driving experience, while the Altima provides good fuel economy.

The Malibu's performance is adequate, but the base engine is less powerful than some rivals' offerings. Features are comparable, but the MyLink system is not as user-friendly as some competitors' infotainment systems.

Price-wise, the Malibu is often more affordable on the used market, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, considering long-term reliability and potential maintenance costs, a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord might be a better choice, despite being potentially more expensive upfront. The Ford Fusion presents a similar alternative, with a slightly more refined driving experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is a decent choice for budget-minded buyers seeking a comfortable and spacious mid-size sedan. It's ideal for families needing a reliable daily commuter, as long as they are aware of potential issues like oil consumption and infotainment glitches.

Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A well-maintained example with a thorough pre-purchase inspection is key. Given its age, buying used is the only option. The LT trim offers a good balance of features and value. Consider alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord for better long-term reliability, if the budget allows. Prioritize vehicles with complete maintenance records and evidence of addressed recalls.

This is a great looking car that performed great at high

This is a great looking car that performed great at high speeds and on curvy, hilly roads as well as had awesome pick up! Started having some real issues with I believe the ecodrive. Brought it several places and got no real answers. Everything would work correctly, then when I would get to a set of lights or a stop sign and the car would go to stall out. If i would put my foot on the brake and drop it into neutral and race it up a bit so my rpm's would catch it before it stalled out, I could drop it back into drive and it would go but if it stalled, it was over!!! I would need to jump start it! I put a new battery in it, a new alternator and nothing changed. So i brought it to mechanics and they couldn't figure it out. Well I drove it from New Hampshire all the way to Arizona with the issue it had and we thank God went a way that didn't have lights or stop signs and it was a decent trip! We didn't have to mess with it much and the engine ran great! So anyways, where we ended up moving in Arizona has lots of lights and stop signs so I brought it to a mechanic in Arizona. I explained what the issue it was having and left the car there suddenly the mechanic says the engine is no good and it needs either a new engine or a ring job. So yeah. I cannot really complain about the car. But I can completely complain about the problems I've had with shops in the state of Arizona!!!!

It's A DON'T FOR ME

The 2015 Chevy Malibu looks good But the seats are to low and are not built to last . My driver's seat thread is coming apart and I am the only driver and I have seat covers . The front end of the car ' the bumper area' always takes a beating as it is extremely low and and any low dip to enter a parking lot etc, you're sure to scrub the underneath rubber ,I guess spoiler? The 2015 Malibu also doesn't have any get up and go about it and it takes a minute for it to shift. Again I like the look of the car but I hate I chose it ! My car was only 3 yrs old and only had 30,000 miles on it.

2015 Malibu LT

Since I bought this car in May of 2018 I have had it in for an airbag problem 5 times, and it’s going in again for the 6th time on 4/18 for the same problem. In the last 2 months the airbag warning light and bell has come on 52 times. It’s annoying that I have to go sit there for hours to get it fixed but it never stays fixed! In the past 2 days another problem showed up now the trunk won’t open. The eco boost fuel saver doesn’t work anymore either. I think my car was a lemon from the start!

Good used car. Cheaper than competition

It's a good car. Bought it used. I bought it with 84000 miles, now has 111,000 miles. Main computer had to be replaced, and was done under warranty. I replaced the brakes myself at 104,000 miles, and they were the original OE GM brakes the car was born with. Seats lack support, but I bought a leather cushion that helps. The back seat is really tight, ok for small kids. My fuel economy in the city can get to 23 mpg if I don't use the AC. It gets worse city mileage in the winter too. Highway mileage, the car does well, 34-35 if I drive it right. I think for a reliable used car, it's ok. They are cheaper than the Japanese competition. Rides and handles well.

Dont buy!

Ever since we drove off the lot we have had nothing but problems. The seal around the trunk and back glass is defected. And its not just my car this is a pretty common issue one of sales guy told us when we brought in to TRY to get it fixed under warranty which of course doesnt cover seals. Mold everywhere and trunk is starting to rust.
