The Good
The 2004 Tahoe offers strong V8 performance and decent reliability for its class. Comfort is a plus, especially on long trips, and its classic SUV design still appeals to many. For practical buyers, it boasts ample cargo space and towing capability. Emotionally, it represents a sense of ruggedness and capability, being a large and powerful SUV.
The Bad

What Problems Does the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe Have?
Recalls for the 2004 Tahoe have included issues related to the fuel system and brake hydraulic pressure modulator. Rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters (road salt), is another long-term reliability concern, affecting body panels and undercarriage components. Suspension components, like ball joints and tie rod ends, can wear out over time, requiring replacement.
While not specific to the 2004 model year, these issues are typical for vehicles of this generation and age. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, can help mitigate some of these problems. Checking the vehicle's VIN for recall history is recommended before purchasing.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and available side-impact airbags. Stability control (StabiliTrak) was also an available option, enhancing handling and preventing skidding.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the 2004 Tahoe were generally good. It typically received four or five stars for frontal crash protection and three to five stars for side-impact protection, depending on the seating position. Rollover ratings were lower, reflecting the higher center of gravity of SUVs. Keep in mind these ratings are relative to vehicles of that era and should be interpreted accordingly.

How Does the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Reliability is a key area where the Tahoe is comparable to its GM counterpart, the Yukon, but the Expedition had some reliability advantages in certain years. The Armada, while newer, also offered comparable reliability. Price-wise, the Tahoe was generally competitive, often slightly more affordable than the Expedition.
Alternatives to the 2004 Tahoe include the GMC Yukon (essentially the same vehicle with slightly different styling and features), the Ford Expedition (offers a more refined ride and potentially better reliability), and the Toyota Sequoia (known for its long-term reliability, but may be more expensive). If reliability is a primary concern, the Sequoia is a better choice, albeit potentially at a higher price point. The Expedition offers a similar blend of features and capability.

Bottom line best money i ever spent on a car

Best SUV to buy at high mileageBought my 2004 Tahoe Z71 (w/ 4WD) at 200,000 in 2017 and it was definitely a gamble but it has totally paid off. I have driven extensively in both city and highway and it is truly an enjoyable experience. The engine and transmission even with the high mileage still kicks and can burn some rubber (for a family SUV). I had to replace the 4WD at 223k miles and it ran be $2,700 for a brand new one, but I didn’t even notice it was broken until the signs became abundantly clear across the board. The Tahoe is just incapable of dying and was built to please whoever is lucky to drive it. It’s got a powerful engine and a super reliable transmission with interior comfort beyond what you’d expect. It really says something when after 4 years of ownership my only complaint is that it doesn’t have an AUX port but the Bose premium sound option is some of the best I’ve seen/heard from the manufacturer’s options for cars.

It was exactly what we were looking for.It is comfortable, has plenty of power, lots of room, and all the features we wanted. My wife wanted to be able to sit up higher than she could in a smaller car.

Best 2004 Tahoe EVER!!!16 yrs old. 65k miles. Nary a drop of oil used. Never been in shop for ANYTHING! I can afford a 2021 Corvette but why trade away the MOST RELIABLE vehicle I have owned in my 70 yrs. Thank you Texas Tahoe for such quality!!!

Probably my favorite vehicle I’ve ever ownedI enjoy my Tahoe a lot considering that a lot has been done to it like lift kit and etc. I highly recommend to anyone looking for the legroom or even the 4WD. The Tahoe hasn’t let me down yet. I love it, bumper to bumper. I wouldn’t own another vehicle. It fits my personality just right and I couldn’t picture myself driving a Ford Expedition or a Dodge Durango. This year model Tahoe, even the whole roundbody style trucks, have some of the best riding seats and some of the best interior. The 5.3L LS engine in the Tahoe is also extremely easy to modify and upgrade as well. I’m doing a camshaft swap on mine. Highly highly recommend
