2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Review: Very Reliable Large SUV With Reasonable Ownership Costs

Rating: 4.70
Based on 93 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV, part of a lineage tracing back to the Blazer. It's a body-on-frame SUV known for its spaciousness and towing capabilities. Key trims include LS, LT, and Premier. The 2018 model year continued the fourth generation. When new, prices ranged from around $48,000 to $68,000+. Its popularity stems from its ability to haul large families and cargo while offering a comfortable ride and truck-like capabilities.
The Good

The 2018 Tahoe offers a blend of practical and emotional appeal. Its strong V8 engines provide ample power for towing and hauling (performance), while its spacious cabin offers comfort for long trips. It's known for decent reliability (reliability) for a large SUV. The Tahoe's classic SUV design (design) gives it a commanding presence. While not the most fuel-efficient (efficiency), it provides good value (value) for buyers needing its capabilities.

The Bad

The 2018 Tahoe isn't without its drawbacks. The third-row seat is cramped for adults, and cargo space behind it is limited. Fuel economy is below average for the class. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and transmission. The body-on-frame construction can result in a less refined ride compared to some crossovers. Watch for potential AFM (Active Fuel Management) issues.

What Problems Does the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe include issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which can lead to excessive oil consumption and potential engine damage. Some owners have reported transmission problems, including rough shifting and hesitation, particularly with the 6-speed automatic. Infotainment system glitches, such as freezing screens and connectivity issues, are also common complaints.
Recalls for the 2018 Tahoe have included issues with the third-row seat belts and potential problems with the brake assist system. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the AFM system's potential for failure, requiring costly repairs. The body-on-frame construction, while durable, can contribute to rattles and squeaks over time. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system and power windows. Checking the vehicle's history for performed recalls and addressing any AFM-related concerns proactively can help mitigate potential long-term issues. Furthermore, paying close attention to transmission performance during a pre-purchase inspection is recommended.

How long will the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe can reasonably be expected to provide 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system maintenance are crucial for long-term durability. The AFM system remains a potential long-term weakness, and some owners choose to disable it to prevent future problems. The body-on-frame construction is generally durable, but bushings and suspension components may require replacement over time. Rust can also be a concern in colder climates where road salt is used. Paying attention to these areas and addressing issues promptly can significantly extend the lifespan of the vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe features a user-friendly infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and multiple USB ports. Higher trims offer navigation and a premium Bose audio system. Driver-assistance features include a rearview camera (standard), available parking sensors, lane keep assist, forward collision alert, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. Safety features include standard airbags, stability control, and traction control.
Optional features include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and a head-up display. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show a 4-star or 5-star overall safety rating, depending on the configuration. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary, but the Tahoe typically receives good scores in most crashworthiness tests. The available enhanced driver alert package included features such as low speed forward automatic braking. The MyLink infotainment system is relatively easy to use, and the available Wi-Fi hotspot provides added convenience for passengers.

2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe had an MSRP ranging from approximately $48,000 to $68,000+, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2024, used market prices generally range from $25,000 to $40,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Tahoe depreciates at a moderate rate for a full-size SUV. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and the presence of popular options such as 4WD and the 6.2L V8 engine. Models with clean titles and documented service records tend to command higher prices. Higher trim levels like the Premier also hold their value better.

2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe is generally considered costly to own. Insurance rates are moderate to high, reflecting its size and value. Fuel costs are significant due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, especially if issues arise with the AFM system or transmission. Regular maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, is essential but adds to the overall expense. Long-term ownership costs can be mitigated with proactive maintenance and addressing issues promptly, but it remains a relatively expensive vehicle to own compared to smaller SUVs or crossovers.

2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe competes with the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada. Compared to the Expedition, the Tahoe's interior space is slightly smaller, particularly in the third row and cargo area, but its styling is often preferred. The Expedition offers a more modern turbocharged engine with better fuel economy and a more refined ride. The Sequoia is known for its exceptional reliability but lacks the Tahoe's modern features and fuel efficiency. The Armada provides good value for its size and features but trails the Tahoe in terms of overall refinement and brand reputation.
In terms of performance, the Tahoe offers strong V8 power but lags behind the Expedition's turbocharged engine in fuel economy. Feature-wise, the Tahoe is competitive, especially in higher trims. Reliability is generally good, but the Sequoia is arguably more reliable. Price-wise, the Tahoe falls in the middle of the pack. Alternatives to consider include the GMC Yukon (essentially a more upscale Tahoe) or the Ford Expedition if fuel economy and third-row space are priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Sequoia is a strong contender. However, if you prefer the styling and features of a Chevrolet product, the Tahoe is a solid choice.

Ranks #847 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe a Good Wagon?

The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe is ideal for families needing a spacious SUV with strong towing capabilities. It's a worthwhile purchase if you prioritize V8 power, a comfortable ride, and traditional SUV styling. However, be prepared for below-average fuel economy and potentially higher maintenance costs.
Buying used is generally recommended due to depreciation. Consider the LT or Premier trims for their added features and value. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial, paying close attention to the AFM system and transmission. If third-row space is a top priority, explore alternatives like the Ford Expedition. Overall, the Tahoe offers a compelling blend of practicality and comfort for those who need a full-size SUV, provided potential issues are addressed proactively.

Transmission slips at 75000, GM changed fluid and filter

Transmission slips at 75000, GM changed fluid and filter at my expense, still slips. No advice on next steps. Touch screen don’t work, Gm replaced at my expense, still don’t work. They don’t know what to do about it. Trying to sell me another Tahoe, why the xxxx do I want another one with problems like this that GM don’t know how to fix? I understand that these are known problems on millions of GM cars and trucks but there are no recalls. Sucks!!!

My Tahoe exceeded my expectations.

I needed a vehicle to accommodate my 5 grandchildren. The WIFI is a must for school pickups, and traveling. The safety features exceeded my expectations. Safety comes first, it's my upmost priority. However, the luggage accommodation could be improved. That's definitely not a deal breaker for me. I learned to use the top rack and add a trailer for luggage. The Onstar features gives me more confidence when on the road. I love it.

Mansion on Wheels!!!

I’ve had an 2002 Ford Explorer, 2007 Nissan Murano, 2010 Infinity FX 45, 2011 Ford Edge, 2013 Tahoe LT and a 2015 Yukon Denali…none gave me the ride, comfort, luxury and feel like the 2018 Tahoe Premier.

absolutely hate this thing

It's been in the shop way too many times, the fit and finish is horrible. Hood won't line up on either side of the fenders. Bumpers flap. Was told by a body shop that's now normal on these. Seriously?! a $40,000 vehicle and the fit and finish is about as horrible as a 20 year old car. Come on GM. A/C stopped working shortly after I got it, the bumper sits out, nothing lines up. Supposedly this was a certified GM used demo. Awful. I hate all the technology. The radio won't even search stations until it's done telling you "Wi fi connected". Don't care. The back up camera is useless and distracting. I want my '80's Suburbans back. Those were awesome. I heard from Scotty Kilmer that most of the components are made in Mexico, including the A/C unit that goes out and the rear differential. Also the handling is horrible. I feel like I'm being pulled left then right. Dealership of course says, "normal". The transmission slips until warm. Once again, GM says, "that's normal". Well, I will not be purchasing a GM vehicle ever again. I thought my Dodge Charger had problems until I got this thing. Never again. Never, never, never. I hate it. And for you techy junkies out there who insist on this safety and driver stuff? You can use it as a suppository. Again, I want my buttons and knobs of the '80's back. NOW. Until GM gets their head out of their arsh, I will not ever be back.

Very dependable and looks good but has Issues

We bought the midnight edition because it looked “tough” since my husband drives it too. I didn’t realize it would be so rough riding but I understand now it’s because it’s 4WD and meant to be “off road” and rugged. For a woman, I should have chosen a regular Tahoe. Also, the carpet is not glued down at the back seat feet area nor at the 3rd row seating and comes up and shows insulation when vacuumed. It is a major tripping hazard so I wouldn’t recommend it for kids or elderly people.

Best Full size SUV I’ve owned

Like my Tahoe very much, second one I’ve owned. Not too happy with the magnetic suspension system, 45,000 miles and they require replacing. Otherwise, I enjoy my ride.
