2007 Chevrolet Tahoe Review: Unreliable Year To Avoid For The Popular Large SUV

Rating: 4.63
Based on 100 Owner Reviews â–¶
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV, part of the third-generation Tahoe produced from 2007-2014. It offers a spacious cabin and truck-like capabilities. Key trims include LS, LT, and LTZ. The Tahoe is popular for its ability to haul passengers and cargo comfortably, while also providing a robust towing capacity. Original pricing ranged from approximately $33,000 to $45,000. Its blend of utility and relative affordability made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2007 Tahoe provides strong V8 performance and comfortable seating for up to nine passengers. Its traditional SUV design appeals to those seeking a rugged aesthetic. Practical buyers appreciate its towing capacity and cargo space, while emotional buyers value the sense of security and commanding presence it offers. It is considered reasonably reliable for its class.

The Bad

The 2007 Tahoe's weaknesses include lower fuel economy compared to modern SUVs and some reported issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which can lead to oil consumption. Potential buyers should also inspect for transmission issues and electrical problems. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters. Interior plastics can feel cheap.

What Problems Does the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe include issues related to the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system. This system, designed to improve fuel economy by deactivating cylinders, can lead to excessive oil consumption and carbon buildup. Some owners have reported transmission problems, including hard shifting or complete failure, particularly at higher mileage. Electrical issues, such as problems with the instrument panel, door locks, and power windows, have also been noted. Recalls for the 2007 Tahoe have addressed issues such as faulty airbags and potential brake assist malfunctions. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of the suspension components, particularly the autoride system on higher trims. Rust can be a problem, especially in areas with road salt. The 2007 model year, being an early year of the third generation, may exhibit more of these issues compared to later model years within the same generation. Regular maintenance and addressing minor problems promptly can help mitigate some of these potential issues.

How long will the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone and beyond with consistent oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely repairs. However, neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. The AFM system, if not properly maintained, can lead to engine problems over time. Transmission issues are also a common concern as the vehicle ages. Suspension components, especially on models with Autoride, may require replacement over time. Durability largely depends on how well the vehicle was cared for throughout its life. Vehicles with diligent maintenance records tend to last longer and perform better.

The car met all my needs, it's roomy, plenty of space and has not had any issues with its engine or transmission. I would buy this again in the future.

Worse nightmare vehicle we have ever purchased!!!!! Sooo many problems!!! We were lied too!! Nightmare of epic proportions regret this purchase!! Giant LEMON and they knew it when they sold it!!!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe offered a range of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard features typically included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player, while higher trims offered options such as a Bose premium sound system and a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but included available features like rear parking sensors. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, and front airbags. Side-impact airbags were optional on some trims.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show good performance in frontal and side-impact tests. However, rollover ratings were typically lower, which is common for SUVs of this era. It's important to note that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2007. The Tahoe didn't offer modern driver-assistance systems like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning.
Optional features varied by trim and could include navigation systems, sunroofs, and upgraded interior materials. While the technology is dated by today's standards, the 2007 Tahoe provided a reasonable set of features for its time, with a focus on occupant safety and entertainment.

2007 Chevrolet Tahoe Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe had an MSRP ranging from approximately $33,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today's used market, prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Tahoe has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and high production volume. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance records, mileage, and the presence of desirable features like leather seats or a premium sound system. Models with lower mileage and clean titles command higher prices. The demand for full-size SUVs also influences resale value.

2007 Chevrolet Tahoe Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typically average for a full-size SUV. Fuel costs can be high due to its relatively low fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially as the vehicle ages. Common repairs, such as transmission work or AFM system issues, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits. Regular maintenance can help prevent costly repairs, but overall, the Tahoe is not the most economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2007 Chevrolet Tahoe Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe competes with other full-size SUVs such as the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada. In terms of performance, the Tahoe offers comparable V8 power and towing capacity to its rivals. Feature-wise, it's fairly similar, although some competitors might offer slightly more advanced tech for the time.
Reliability is a mixed bag; the Tahoe has its known issues (AFM, transmission), and some competitors like the Toyota Sequoia tend to be more reliable in the long run. Price-wise, the Tahoe is often competitive on the used market, making it an attractive option for budget-minded buyers.
Alternatives to the Tahoe include:
  • Ford Expedition: Offers similar capabilities and features.
  • Toyota Sequoia: Known for its reliability and longevity.
  • GMC Yukon: Essentially a mechanically identical version of the Tahoe, but often with slightly more upscale styling and features.

If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Sequoia might be a better choice, even if it comes at a slightly higher price point. However, if budget is a primary concern and you're willing to address potential maintenance issues, the Tahoe remains a viable option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe is ideal for buyers needing a full-size SUV with substantial passenger and cargo capacity, along with decent towing capabilities. It's a worthwhile purchase on the used market if you find one in good condition with well-documented maintenance records. Consider the LT trim for a balance of features and affordability. Be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs and lower fuel economy compared to newer vehicles. It's best suited for those who understand its potential weaknesses and are willing to address them proactively. Avoid models with known problems or those that haven't been properly maintained. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended.

Tahoe too Pricey

I’ve owned a Tahoe for the past 15 years. 4 different Tahoe’s. The price has gone to HIGH . My current Tahoe just had the front tire literally fall off. It was in the shop along time getting fixed. While waiting I bought a used Silverado 2500. I’m now about to order a new vehicle and this loyal Tahoe driving WOMAN is switching to the new Silverado 2500 it does More and looks Great at waaaay lower price.

Most comfortable car I’ve owned.

I love this car. It is very comfortable to ride in and very easy to maneuver in and out of parking spaces. It has been great for long road trips. The only reason I am selling is because I am handicapped and it is getting hard for me to get in and out of this car.

By far the best car I have had

This car is a great one to own. You can use it for almost anything and is one of the most reliable cars out there, I mean why do you think police officers use them? In this car you can tow, fit a whole family of 8, take a long road trip, turn into a drag racer, and even make into an off road vehicle. Chevy did a fantastic job with this car and it will always have a special place in my heart.
