2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Review: Reliable Year For The Strong Full Size SUV

Rating: 4.37
Based on 59 Owner Reviews â–¶
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV, part of the GMT900 platform generation that ran from 2007-2014. It's known for its truck-like capabilities combined with passenger comfort. Key trims include the LS, LT, and LTZ. New, the Tahoe's price ranged approximately from $34,000 to $45,000. Its popularity stems from its spaciousness, towing capacity, and availability of features for both work and family needs.
The Good

The 2008 Tahoe boasts strong performance with available V8 engines and impressive towing capacity, appealing to practical buyers. Comfort is a highlight, with a spacious cabin and available luxury features. Its classic SUV design and road presence evoke a sense of security and capability, enticing emotional buyers. Its reliability (with proper maintenance) and good value for money further solidify its appeal.

The Bad

The 2008 Tahoe's weaknesses include lower fuel economy compared to newer SUVs. Potential issues to watch out for are transmission problems, particularly with the 4L60E transmission in earlier models, and potential AFM (Active Fuel Management) issues on some V8 engines leading to oil consumption. Interior plastic quality can also be a concern.

What Problems Does the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe include transmission issues, specifically with the 4L60E transmission. Some owners report slipping or hard shifting, especially at higher mileages. The Active Fuel Management (AFM) system on the 5.3L V8 is also a common source of complaints, leading to excessive oil consumption. This can result in fouled spark plugs and potential engine damage if not addressed.

Other reported issues include problems with the stabilitrak system and electrical glitches, such as malfunctioning door locks and windows. Some owners have reported issues with the instrument cluster. Recalls for the 2008 Tahoe have addressed concerns such as faulty airbags and fuel system components.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for AFM-related engine problems. Rust can also be an issue in regions with harsh winters. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and transmission fluid services, can mitigate some of these risks. However, the potential for these issues to arise at higher mileage remains a concern for potential buyers.

How long will the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report years of service exceeding 15 years with regular upkeep.

However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or transmission services can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. The primary weaknesses that emerge over time are transmission wear, AFM-related oil consumption (if equipped), and potential rust in areas with road salt. Suspension components, like shocks and struts, will also require replacement over time. Consistent care is crucial to maximizing longevity.

Purchased a 2008 LTZ a couple of years ago from my husband's boss with less than 70,000 miles on it. WE LOVE IT. Very roomy for all of my grandkids, love the DVD player and all the extra room. Drives like a dream and for someone who dislikes driving in the snow, I feel completely safe on the road. The towing is amazing and the handling is as smooth as butter. This has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. Hope to have it many more years.

I've always own Ford truck...gave Chevy a try I've always wanted to own a Tahoe so I bought 08 Tahoe worst car I've own...at 120,000 miles I put in a brand new rear differential , another tranny after the new rear differential...now I think it needs a new engine?no power at all... should've bought another expedition...

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included air conditioning, basic audio system (often with CD player and auxiliary input), and power windows/locks. Higher trims like the LT and LTZ added features such as a Bose premium sound system, rear-seat entertainment system (DVD player with screen), and leather upholstery.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but options included rear parking sensors and stability control (StabiliTrak). Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and front and side airbags. Optional features like Autoride suspension (on LTZ) enhanced ride comfort and handling.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good performance, with mostly four- and five-star ratings in frontal and side-impact crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings varied, but the Tahoe generally received good marks for frontal offset crash tests. Keep in mind that safety technology has improved significantly since 2008, so comparing these ratings to modern vehicles isn't directly equivalent. The available OnStar system provided emergency assistance and vehicle diagnostics. The key is to consider the available features in the context of the vehicle's age.

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe ranged from approximately $34,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location, but generally range from $6,000 to $15,000.
The Tahoe has depreciated significantly, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition (especially regarding rust), mileage, service history, and whether it has desirable options like four-wheel drive or the rear-seat entertainment system. Tahoes with documented maintenance and low mileage command higher prices.

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are moderate, but fuel costs are high due to its relatively poor fuel economy. Maintenance can be moderate if kept on a maintenance schedule, but repairs can be expensive, especially regarding transmission or AFM-related engine issues. Long-term ownership costs will likely be higher compared to more fuel-efficient and reliable vehicles. Budgeting for potential repairs is crucial.

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe competes with other full-size SUVs like the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada. In terms of performance, the Tahoe offers comparable engine power and towing capacity to its rivals. Features are generally similar across the class, with each offering various trim levels and options. However, the Toyota Sequoia is often regarded as having better long-term reliability.

In terms of price on the used market, the Tahoe is often competitively priced. However, the Ford Expedition offers similar capabilities and features, and might be a worthwhile alternative to consider. The Nissan Armada also offers a similar experience. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual needs and priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Sequoia is a strong contender. If you need maximum towing capability, research all choices and their respective towing packages and ratings. While the GM trucks are very capable, the Active Fuel Management system in this era may lead to long-term maintenance headaches and should be taken into consideration. A later-model Tahoe without AFM, or a different brand entirely, could be superior choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is ideal for buyers needing a spacious SUV with strong towing capacity and truck-like capabilities. It can be worth buying on the used market if found in good condition with documented maintenance history. Look for models with lower mileage and minimal rust.

It's best to avoid models with a known history of AFM-related oil consumption. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Consider the LT trim for a balance of features and value. If towing isn't a major concern, newer, more fuel-efficient SUVs might be a better option. Be prepared for potentially higher long-term maintenance costs.

Not as economical as the 2 wheel drive Tahoe

Had a 2wheel drive prior to this and wish I had another just like it. Far more economical that this newer one. Would definitely love another 2 wheel drive.

Owned 2, but never again

I have owned 2. This one is beautiful...,but when something needs repaired, it will cost a fortune. In one year, I have replaced rear end, timing gear, all sorts of computer issues. Spent over $8000 ..only repaired it because it was paid for. Never own another one...

I Love My Tahoe!!

I have the Tahoe LTZ and am absolutely in love with it! It’s currently over 150,000 miles, the only thing I’ve had to replace was the serpentine belt (air conditioning belt) and tension belt, it’s not an expensive fix and it is required to be replaced every 100,000 miles. It has plenty of room and is very luxurious, my kids love the DVD player. Definitely recommend this suv.

Always something to get fixed at high cost.

Very cheaply made. Door handles came loose, had to glue them back on. Stabilizer bars rusted thru. Ball joints had to be replaced. Poor gas milage compared to my 2006 Suburban. Seatbelt got hung up and wouldn’t work. Warning light to service battery charging system. Chevy dealers cannot replace faulty airbags made by Tacata because they are not available. This is on a vehicle with less than 100k miles. Trade in value at reputable dealers is a lot lower than Kelly blue book.

Very unreliable car. Wish I could list issues!

Terrible! Expensive. The car was only years’ old when the suspension broke. The right, driver’s-side wheel collapsed, while turning. We were driving and the car went crazy: lock buttons started going up and down, the speedometer was possessed, the car literally started to slow down and change speeds on its own. The tailgate stopped working, the handle on the back passenger side fell apart and my husband had to duct tape it together. I cut my hand on the inside handle because they use a plastic finish that gets super sharp with time,. The light from the radio and GPS control box, stays on all the time and it doesn’t dim or turn off, so in snowy weather or heavy rain, the bright blue light blinds you. We have to cover it with a coat so that we can see better when driving. Would never buy this car again. Nothing but problems. There are more items, but too much to list.
