The Good
The 2001 Jeep Cherokee offers a blend of performance and reliability. Its 4.0L engine provides ample power for off-roading and daily driving, appealing to the adventurous spirit. Its simple design contributes to ease of maintenance and repair, a plus for practical buyers. It's also surprisingly comfortable for its age, and represents excellent value for money given its capabilities.
The Bad
Common weaknesses of the 2001 Jeep Cherokee include rust, particularly in the floorboards and rocker panels. The 4.0L engine can develop oil leaks as it ages. The automatic transmission can also be a point of concern if not properly maintained. Check for signs of excessive wear and tear, especially if it was used heavily off-road.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2001 Jeep Cherokee Have?
Electrical problems, including malfunctioning power windows and door locks, can occur. Vacuum leaks can cause poor engine performance. There have been some recalls related to airbag systems and brake components in earlier XJ models, but the 2001 specifically had fewer recalls compared to older years. Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance and how the vehicle was used. Cherokees that were frequently used for off-roading are more likely to have suspension and drivetrain issues. Properly maintained Cherokees can last well over 200,000 miles, but neglected ones can become money pits.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features include standard front airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available as an option on some trims. Power steering and power brakes were standard. The Cherokee lacks modern safety technologies like electronic stability control or traction control. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA are available, but they are not particularly impressive by today's standards. The Cherokee received mixed ratings, with concerns about side-impact protection. Optional features included air conditioning, power windows and locks, cruise control, and upgraded audio systems. The focus was primarily on practicality and off-road capability rather than advanced technology. The simplicity of the design means fewer things to go wrong, but also fewer safety and convenience features compared to newer vehicles. For its time, it was adequate but definitely lacking compared to modern standards. The Limited trim offers the most features, but even then, the tech is quite dated.

How Does the 2001 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other Wagon?
Reliability is comparable across these models, but the Cherokee's 4.0L engine is renowned for its longevity. Feature-wise, the RAV4 and CR-V offer more modern amenities and better fuel economy. Price-wise, the Cherokee is often more affordable on the used market, offering excellent value. Similar alternatives include the Jeep Wrangler (for more dedicated off-roading), the Toyota 4Runner (for greater reliability and longevity, albeit at a higher price), and the Nissan Pathfinder (for a balance of off-road capability and on-road comfort). If off-road prowess is not a priority, the RAV4 or CR-V offer a more practical and fuel-efficient option.

The most reliable vehicle I have ever ownedI have a 1999 and a 2001 jeep Cherokee sport and both have over 200,000 miles the 2001 has 297,000 miles and sounds and runs like it's brand new has never failed to start even when it's the closest outside best vehicle I have ever owned

Best auto I have ever ownedMy 2001 Cherokee Sport has over 249,000 miles, does not use oil and has never let me down. I have owned it for over 19 years. It gets routine maintenance, which is essential. I have a Mercedes and a BMW and would not trade the Jeep for either of them. The Jeep is my every day drive. I can take it anywhere. It gets 30 mpg when I keep the speed below 60 miles per hour on the highway.

Extremely reliable car for the price.you can do anything with this vehicle the mods are never ending. The i6 4.0 jeep motor is indestructible it will take any abuse. I would say it could fit 6 at the most anymore just gets sketchy. The interior is very simple but the seats are like a recliner very comfortable. Now even though mine was supercharged and straight piped it wasn't the fastest suv on the market but it would hit 140 if you have it floored but even stock they aren't to bad they just have a lot of torque.

Most powerful car I've owned! This car is simply the best in the snow. I have never been stuck in the snow using its 4x4 capabilities. It is also capable of towing alot of weight. There is also room for the family and friends!

Rust bucket Money PotMoney Pitt rust bucket. My husband bought a 2001 Jeep in March 2019 advertised as “clean†“ runs great†The first issue is that it needed inspection which the merchant said he would reimburse, he did reimburse us but it needed work to even pass. The Mechanic told us that his car has many issues. The car looks beautiful at first glance but if you look close you can see the rust underneath the paint job. The passenger door not lock unless you use the key and the rust is eating away at the doors which are falling apart. We had antifreeze leaking and had to replace the radiator. The air condition does not work The stereo is great. We paid $6000 for a car stereo. We were stupid to jump into this purchase. Buyer beware.
