Rating: 4.41
Based on 32 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2002 Dodge Dakota is a mid-size pickup truck that offered a compelling alternative to smaller compact trucks and larger full-size models. Produced by Dodge from 1987 to 2011, the Dakota stood out with its intermediate size. The 2002 model came in various configurations, including Regular Cab, Extended Cab (Club Cab), and Crew Cab, with trims like Base, Sport, SLT, and SLT Plus. Original pricing ranged from around $16,000 to $28,000, depending on configuration and options. Its unique size made it popular, offering more capability than smaller trucks, but with better maneuverability and fuel economy than full-size trucks.
The Good

The 2002 Dodge Dakota offered a good balance of performance and practicality. Its available V8 engine provided ample power for towing and hauling, appealing to those needing capability. Its bold, truck-like design was attractive. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offered reasonable value for its size and performance. It's generally considered to be reliable when properly maintained, and the interior offered a decent level of comfort.

The Bad

The 2002 Dodge Dakota has some known weaknesses. Rust can be a significant issue, particularly in areas with road salt. The automatic transmissions in some models can be prone to problems. Some owners have reported issues with the 4.7L V8 engine, including sludge buildup if oil changes aren't performed regularly. Check for worn suspension components and ball joints.

What Problems Does the 2002 Dodge Dakota Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2002 Dodge Dakota include rust, particularly on the frame and body panels, especially in areas where road salt is used. Transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmissions, are common complaints, ranging from slipping to complete failure. The 4.7L V8 engine, while powerful, is known for potential oil sludge buildup if regular maintenance is neglected, leading to engine damage. Some owners have reported issues with the heating and air conditioning systems, including blower motor failures. Suspension components, such as ball joints and control arms, can wear out prematurely, leading to handling issues. Recalls for the 2002 Dakota mainly concerned issues with the airbag system and possible fuel leakage. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the aforementioned rust, transmission, and engine issues. Electrical problems, such as issues with the instrument cluster and power windows, are also occasionally reported. Before purchasing a used 2002 Dakota, it's essential to thoroughly inspect the vehicle for rust, check the transmission fluid condition, and listen for any unusual engine noises.

How long will the 2002 Dodge Dakota last?

Given proper maintenance, a 2002 Dodge Dakota can reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching these milestones with regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely repairs. However, long-term durability is heavily influenced by maintenance habits and environmental factors. Dakotas in regions with harsh winters and salted roads are more prone to rust-related issues. Weaknesses over time include potential engine sludge buildup in the 4.7L V8 if oil changes are neglected, transmission problems, and wear and tear on suspension components. Preventative maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for maximizing the lifespan of a 2002 Dakota. Ignoring rust spots will lead to extensive and expensive repairs down the line.

Bought this Dakota Quad 4x4 new. It has the 4.7 V8. The absolute Best Truck I've ever owned. It's still lookin and running like new with 250.000 miles on it. Never had any problems with it. It's sitting in the drive way right now.

Bought my SXT model new in 2002, Traded my 1994 Dakota. Still driving the 2002 daily. It has been an excellent truck. The only problem I had was when I was a mobile technician and drove a company van so my Dakota was mostly parked for about 4 years, the rubber hose on the evaporator canister deteriorated and the check engine light came on. since replacing that, no problems. 156,000 miles and still going strong.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Dodge Dakota's built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic by today's standards. Standard models typically included an AM/FM radio, while higher trims offered a cassette or CD player. Optional features included a premium audio system with multiple speakers. Driver-assistance features were limited; anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available, but features like traction control or stability control were not offered. Safety features included standard airbags for the driver and front passenger. Optional features included fog lamps and a security system. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary depending on the cab configuration. The Dakota generally received decent scores for frontal crash protection, but side-impact protection was typically lower. Given its age, the 2002 Dakota lacks many of the advanced safety and technology features found in modern vehicles. Features like rearview cameras, blind-spot monitoring, and advanced infotainment systems were not available. While reliable transportation, its tech and safety are significantly outdated compared to modern trucks. Consider these limitations when evaluating its suitability for today's driving environment.

2002 Dodge Dakota Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Dodge Dakota had a price range of approximately $16,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim level, cab configuration, and options. Current used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $8,000, but this is highly dependent on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition of the truck, the presence of rust, the engine type (V8 models generally command higher prices), and the mileage. A well-maintained Dakota with low mileage and minimal rust will fetch a higher price than one with high mileage and rust issues. The truck's history of accidents and maintenance records also play a crucial role in determining its resale value.

2002 Dodge Dakota Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2002 Dodge Dakota are generally lower than newer vehicles due to its age and depreciated value. Fuel costs can be moderate to high, depending on the engine and driving habits, with the V8 models being the least fuel-efficient. Maintenance and repair costs can be unpredictable. While some parts are readily available and relatively inexpensive, unexpected repairs can add up. Rust repair can be particularly costly. Overall, the 2002 Dodge Dakota is not the most economical vehicle to own, particularly if it requires extensive repairs or suffers from significant rust. Budgeting for potential maintenance is important.

2002 Dodge Dakota Insurance

Insurance for a 2002 Dodge Dakota is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Dodge Dakota Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2002 Dodge Dakota competed with trucks like the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S-10/GMC Sonoma, and Toyota Tacoma. In terms of performance, the Dakota's available V8 engine gave it an edge over some of its rivals, offering better towing capacity and acceleration. However, the Tacoma was generally considered more reliable. Features were comparable across the class, with similar levels of standard and optional equipment. The Dakota's pricing was generally competitive. The Ford Ranger offered a more compact and fuel-efficient option, while the Tacoma boasted superior reliability. The Chevrolet S-10/GMC Sonoma were also reliable options but lacked the Dakota's V8 power. Similar alternatives to the 2002 Dakota include the Nissan Frontier, which offered a good balance of price and features. For those prioritizing reliability above all else, the Toyota Tacoma is a better choice, despite the higher price point. If fuel economy is a major concern, the Ford Ranger would be a superior option. The Dakota excels in offering V8 power in a mid-size package but trades some reliability for it.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Dodge Dakota a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2002 Dodge Dakota is ideal for someone seeking a capable mid-size truck with V8 power at an affordable price. It's worth buying *used* if you find one in good condition with minimal rust and a well-documented maintenance history. Specifically, a V8-equipped SLT or SLT Plus model in good condition offers the best blend of features and performance. However, be prepared for potential maintenance costs and prioritize vehicles that have been well-maintained. It's not recommended for those prioritizing fuel efficiency or ultimate reliability. Carefully inspect any potential purchase for rust and transmission issues. If you need a work truck on a budget and can do some maintenance yourself, it could be a good option.

Excellent sized small pickup

I have owned my Dakota since 2009 and have maintained it on a regular basis. I use it on a regular basis for pickup truck type work. Right now, it has 165k mles, has been lifted 4.5 inches including 285x75x16 Goodyear Duratracs. I do take it off-roading as it's narrower than the 4 dr Wrangler and only 3" longer. I would recommend one to any person looking for a small truck.

Reliable and Well-maintained

This truck has been extremely reliable and never given me any major headaches. It's turbo-charged and has great pickup for a pickup. It's not too big so it's easy to park in the city and handy for hauling stuff of course. Beware letting your friends know you have it or you will constantly be doing moving favors for them.
