The 2009 Dodge Dakota is a mid-size pickup truck that offered a compelling alternative to larger trucks. Dodge produced Dakotas from 1987 to 2011. The 2009 model was available in extended cab and crew cab configurations. Key trims included ST, Big Horn, TRX, Sport, and Laramie. Pricing ranged roughly from $20,000 to $30,000 when new. Its unique selling point was its size; larger than compact trucks, but smaller and more maneuverable than full-size pickups, making it a practical choice for many.
The Good

The 2009 Dodge Dakota offered decent performance from its V6 and V8 engine options. It had a rugged, truck-like design that appealed to those seeking a traditional aesthetic. For practical buyers, it provided a useful blend of cargo capacity and maneuverability. Emotionally, its bold styling and towing capability gave it a "can-do" attitude.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2009 Dodge Dakota included relatively poor fuel economy, especially with the V8 engine. Some owners reported issues with interior plastics and fit and finish. Rust can be a concern, particularly in areas with road salt. Suspension components and electrical systems should be inspected carefully before purchasing a used model.

What Problems Does the 2009 Dodge Dakota Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Dodge Dakota often revolved around electrical issues, including problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). This could lead to various electrical malfunctions. Owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly compressor failure. Rust was a concern, especially in regions with heavy road salt usage, affecting body panels and undercarriage components. While not a widespread issue, some owners reported transmission problems, especially with higher mileage vehicles. Check engine lights were also a common complaint, often linked to sensor failures or emissions system issues. Recalls for the 2009 Dakota were issued for potential issues with the fuel tank and airbags; verifying that recall work has been completed is crucial. Long-term reliability concerns generally center on the lifespan of the electrical components and potential rust development. Regularly inspecting and maintaining the vehicle can help mitigate some of these issues, but the Dakota doesn't have the reputation for bulletproof reliability that some of its competitors enjoy.

How long will the 2009 Dodge Dakota last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Dodge Dakota could reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially providing 15+ years of service. However, actual lifespan heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting routine servicing like oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses primarily involve rust, electrical component failures (as highlighted with the TIPM), and potential transmission issues at higher mileages. Regular rustproofing treatments, diligent electrical system maintenance, and transmission fluid changes are crucial for maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Dodge Dakota's built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might have offered an upgraded sound system with satellite radio. Navigation was not a common feature in this model year. Driver-assistance features were limited, with no advanced systems like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning available.

Safety features included standard front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC) on some trims. Side-curtain airbags were available as an option. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2009 Dakota varied depending on the specific test and cab configuration. It generally received mixed scores, with some tests showing marginal performance, especially in side-impact protection. Optional features included remote keyless entry, power windows and locks, and cruise control. Overall, the 2009 Dakota prioritized basic functionality over advanced technology, reflecting its design and target market at the time.

2009 Dodge Dakota Prices and Market Value

The 2009 Dodge Dakota had a starting MSRP of around $20,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $30,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Dakota has depreciated significantly over time, typical for older trucks. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition (rust-free examples command a premium), mileage, engine (V8 models tend to hold slightly more value), and trim level. Regular maintenance records and a clean title also positively influence resale value. High-mileage examples or those with known mechanical issues will sell for considerably less.

2009 Dodge Dakota Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Dodge Dakota isn't particularly economical to own. Insurance costs are moderate, similar to other mid-size trucks. Fuel economy, especially with the V8, is poor. Maintenance and repair costs can be average to slightly above average, particularly as the vehicle ages and parts become less readily available. Potential issues with electrical components and rust can lead to unexpected expenses. Overall, long-term ownership costs are moderate but can escalate if preventative maintenance is neglected or significant repairs are needed.

2009 Dodge Dakota Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Dodge Dakota is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Dodge Dakota Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck?

The 2009 Dodge Dakota competed with the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Ford Ranger. In terms of performance, the Dakota's V8 offered competitive power, but its fuel economy lagged behind rivals. Feature-wise, the Dakota was generally less refined than the Tacoma, offering fewer available tech and convenience options. Reliability was a weak point for the Dakota compared to the Tacoma and Frontier, which have historically demonstrated better long-term durability.

Price-wise, the Dakota was often positioned competitively, offering a lower entry price than the Tacoma, but similar to the Frontier and Ranger. If reliability is a primary concern, a used Toyota Tacoma is a superior choice, though it will likely command a higher price. The Nissan Frontier offers a similar blend of capability and price as the Dakota, with arguably better reliability. The Ford Ranger, while smaller, offers a more economical option. For buyers prioritizing V8 power and a lower initial purchase price, the Dakota might be appealing, but potential reliability issues should be carefully considered.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Dodge Dakota a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck?

The 2009 Dodge Dakota is ideal for buyers seeking a mid-size truck with V8 power at a lower price point than its more reliable competitors. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with comprehensive service records, ideally rust-free. Opting for a higher trim like the Laramie can provide more desirable features, but carefully inspect the electrical system. Given its age, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection to identify potential issues. If reliability and resale value are paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier. The Dakota represents a budget-friendly entry into the truck market but requires due diligence before purchasing.

The eighth Dodge Truck, and one of the best!!

I had my 04 dakota advertised for sale, still very reliable, but I wanted four doors. While I waited to sell it, I kept my finger on the pulse of the "Dakota Market" by monitoring, Cars.com. I had two or three of these located not far away for over eight months. When the time came I sold with confidence, made a 300 mile road trip on the fourth of July, and purchased the Dakota on the fifth. Great value! More power than the 04 (same engine), better mileage, better handling, handles my camper trailer better, I love this truck!!
