Rating: 4.27
Based on 69 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Honda CR-V is a compact SUV that gained popularity for its practicality and reliability. Part of the second generation (2002-2006), it features a five-door wagon body style. Key trims include the LX, EX, and SE. When new, pricing ranged roughly from $20,000 to $23,000. Its blend of fuel efficiency, Honda's reputation for dependability, and a spacious interior made it a standout choice in the compact SUV market.
The Good

The 2005 Honda CR-V offers exceptional reliability and a comfortable ride. It boasts good fuel efficiency, making it practical for daily commutes. Emotionally, owners appreciate Honda's reputation for dependability and the peace of mind that comes with it. Its user-friendly design and spacious interior add to its appeal, offering great overall value.

The Bad

The 2005 Honda CR-V's weaknesses include a somewhat underpowered engine, especially when fully loaded or driving uphill. Some owners have reported issues with air conditioning compressor failure. Watch out for rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Also, inspect the condition of the rear differential if it's an all-wheel-drive model.

What Problems Does the 2005 Honda CR-V Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2005 Honda CR-V include issues with the air conditioning compressor. Failures are common, and repairs can be costly. Some owners have experienced issues with the power door locks malfunctioning. Premature rear differential wear and noise are also reported, particularly in AWD models. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, can help mitigate this.

Rust can be a concern, especially in regions with road salt. Check the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion. Some owners have reported issues with the catalytic converter failing over time, which can trigger the check engine light.

While the 2005 CR-V is generally reliable, it's essential to check the vehicle's history for any recalls. Recalls related to airbags or other safety components may have been issued. Long-term reliability is generally good if maintenance is performed on schedule. However, like any older vehicle, age-related wear and tear are inevitable. It is critical to examine maintenance records and perform a thorough inspection before purchasing.

How long will the 2005 Honda CR-V last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2005 Honda CR-V can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with proper care. The engine and transmission are generally durable. However, long-term weaknesses include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates. The rear differential in AWD models requires regular fluid changes to prevent premature wear. Air conditioning system components, particularly the compressor, are also prone to failure over time. Proper maintenance is crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

honda cr past and never again owner
Once my 2005 honda cr v was out of warranty I had a $2,500 repair. Worst part i rarely drove the vehicle due to working remotely. It only had 80,000 miles on it at 8 years old and the transmission went. NEVER AGAIN HONDA!!
love hondas
i had problems with the front drive shaft so they call it a cover up for honda!!! at 13.500 miles the car started to make a grinding noise i went to the dealer to check out problem. they said to me ! you have to change the drive shaft oil !! i said i have driven SUVS all my life and never heard that, so i did what the deler said cost me $165.00. car know has 13.500 miles on it. bouth in 2005 new 21.070.00 plus tax titel LX 4+4. one year later had sam problem. dealer said maryland is sever driving condion ! the real problem is that honda desined a bad suv . the drive shaft in front holds 1/2 oil back 3/5!!!! front oil does not hold up to the car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Honda CR-V's tech and entertainment features are relatively basic by modern standards. Standard features include an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims like the EX offer an upgraded audio system. There are no built-in navigation or advanced driver-assistance systems. Safety features include front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Side airbags were available on some trims.

The CR-V lacks modern tech features like Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone integration, or rearview cameras, which were not common in vehicles of this era.

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally show good performance for the 2005 CR-V. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating for frontal offset crash tests. NHTSA awarded it four stars for driver and front passenger protection in frontal crashes, and five stars for side-impact protection. Keep in mind that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2005, so newer vehicles may offer superior protection.

2005 Honda CR-V Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Honda CR-V had an MSRP ranging from approximately $20,000 to $23,000 depending on the trim level. Currently, used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The CR-V has depreciated significantly over the years, which is typical for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (rust-free examples command a premium), maintenance history, and trim level. The Honda name and reputation for reliability contribute to its relatively stable used market value compared to some competitors.

2005 Honda CR-V Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Honda CR-V is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower than those for larger SUVs. Fuel economy is decent for its class. Maintenance is relatively straightforward, and parts are readily available and affordable. While some repairs, such as A/C compressor replacement, can be costly, overall long-term ownership costs are reasonable due to Honda's reliability. Routine maintenance like oil changes, brake services, and tire rotations are essential to keeping ownership costs down.

2005 Honda CR-V Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Honda CR-V is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Honda CR-V Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2005 Honda CR-V's key rivals include the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and Ford Escape. Compared to the Ford Escape, the CR-V offers superior reliability and resale value. The Toyota RAV4 is a close competitor in terms of reliability, but the CR-V often provides a slightly more spacious interior. The Subaru Forester offers standard all-wheel drive, which is an advantage in snowy conditions, but the CR-V is generally considered to have better fuel economy than the Forester.

In terms of features, the CR-V is fairly basic compared to newer models of its rivals. If you prioritize advanced technology, a newer vehicle might be a better choice. However, the CR-V excels in reliability and practicality. A similar alternative would be the Toyota RAV4 of the same year. If all-wheel drive is a must and reliability is also important, the Subaru Forester is a strong contender, however, expect lower fuel economy. Overall, the CR-V represents a solid balance of reliability, practicality, and affordability in its class.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Honda CR-V a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2005 Honda CR-V is an ideal choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and practical compact SUV. It's particularly well-suited for those who prioritize dependability and fuel efficiency over cutting-edge technology. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a clean history and no signs of rust. Look for EX or SE trims for added features like alloy wheels and a sunroof. Avoid examples with excessive mileage or signs of neglect. Given its age, buying new is not an option, but a thorough inspection of a used model can yield a dependable vehicle for years to come. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic.

Bought a neglected 2005 CRV in 2020 with 150k miles on

Bought a neglected 2005 CRV in 2020 with 150k miles on it. Did most of the repairs myself (extensive YouTube videos) and cheap parts are available. I put in Royal Purple high mileage oil, changed out the transmission fluid (really easy) every 15k miles. New plugs and wires, rear differential fluid change, valve cover gasket, and vvt solenoid with O2 sensors. Believe it or not that's only $400 and I paid $2000. It runs like new. Only bad feature is the paint is terrible for this silver car in Florida. Going strong with 185k miles and I fully expect to get more than 220k.

I like Rhonda

Old car. 300k. Typical replacement items. Always starts. Perfect size and utility. Easy to work on. Kinda ugly. Drives great. Stereo is great. Mileage is notable. Add oil and keep on going

Very reliable

I purchased my 2005 Honda CRV new & I still have it. It is 15 1/2 years old. It's great if you want a small SUV. It's not really comfy for tall people though. That's the only drawback. I just had to change my back rotors for the first time & I have approximately 133K miles.

Love the 2005 style of the CRV

I love the height I get in the CRV, but not too high, so it is still easy to get in and out of. The design is also pleasing to the eye.
