The 2008 Honda CR-V is a compact SUV, part of the model's third generation (2007-2011). It's known for its reliability and practicality. Key trims include the LX, EX, and EX-L. The original MSRP ranged from around $20,000 to $25,000, while current used prices vary based on condition and mileage. Its popularity stems from its fuel efficiency, comfortable ride, and Honda's reputation for dependability.
The Good

The 2008 Honda CR-V boasts legendary Honda reliability, providing peace of mind for practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior appeal to those seeking a family-friendly vehicle. Fuel efficiency is a key advantage, and its reputation for holding its value makes it a smart buy, both emotionally and financially.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2008 Honda CR-V include its somewhat bland styling and modest engine power. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning compressor. Rust can be a problem in areas with road salt, so inspect the undercarriage. The rear differential noise, sometimes requiring repair, is also a known issue to watch out for.

What Problems Does the 2008 Honda CR-V Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Honda CR-V include issues with the air conditioning compressor failing prematurely. This can be a costly repair. Some owners have also reported excessive oil consumption, although this is less common than the AC issue. Rear differential noise is another relatively common complaint, particularly in AWD models, sometimes necessitating a differential fluid change or, in more severe cases, a replacement.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls related to your specific vehicle's VIN. Some potential recall issues may have involved airbag inflators (a widespread issue across many manufacturers, including Honda), or fuel pump failures.

Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around corrosion, especially in areas that use road salt. Regularly washing the undercarriage can help mitigate this. While generally reliable, the 2008 CR-V, like any vehicle, requires diligent maintenance to prevent major problems over time. Early signs of AC trouble, unusual noises from the rear, and regular oil level checks are all advisable.

How long will the 2008 Honda CR-V last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Honda CR-V can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 15+ years of service. Hondas are renowned for their longevity. Good maintenance habits, including timely oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing minor issues promptly, are crucial.

Long-term durability can be affected by rust, particularly in northern climates. Weaknesses over time may include gradual degradation of suspension components, requiring replacement of shocks, struts, and bushings. The air conditioning system can also be a point of concern as it ages, requiring potential repairs or replacement of components.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Honda CR-V's built-in tech is relatively basic by today's standards, but adequate for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input jack. Higher trims (EX and EX-L) offered an upgraded audio system with more speakers, and the EX-L trim had an optional navigation system.

Driver-assistance features were limited; it did not offer modern features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning. Safety features were more comprehensive, including anti-lock brakes (ABS), vehicle stability assist (VSA) with traction control, and side curtain airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally good. The 2008 CR-V received good ratings in most IIHS crash tests. NHTSA gave it 5-star ratings in several categories, including frontal and side crash protection for both driver and passenger.

Optional features included a navigation system (EX-L), heated front seats (EX-L), and a sunroof (EX & EX-L). Overall, while lacking in modern driver-assistance tech, the 2008 CR-V offered a solid suite of safety features for its time.

2008 Honda CR-V Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Honda CR-V ranged from approximately $20,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and location.

The CR-V has depreciated significantly over the years, but it has held its value relatively well compared to some competitors, thanks to Honda's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition (maintenance records, accident history), mileage, trim level (EX-L models generally command higher prices), and whether it's a front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive version.

2008 Honda CR-V Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Honda CR-V is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is good for its class. Maintenance costs are relatively low, thanks to Honda's reliability and readily available parts. Repairs can be more expensive if major components like the AC compressor or rear differential fail, but overall, long-term ownership costs are reasonable. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues early can help prevent costly repairs down the line.

2008 Honda CR-V Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Honda CR-V is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Honda CR-V Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Honda CR-V competed with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Ford Escape. The CR-V excelled in reliability compared to the Ford Escape, which had more reported issues. The Toyota RAV4 offered slightly more powerful engine options but the CR-V often wins regarding ride comfort.

In terms of features, the Nissan Rogue offered a more modern interior design, but the CR-V had better crash test scores. Price-wise, the CR-V was often competitively priced, although specific deals varied.

Alternatives to the 2008 CR-V include: the Toyota RAV4 (for more power), the Subaru Forester (for standard AWD), and the Mazda CX-7 (for a sportier driving experience, but at the cost of reliability). If reliability is paramount, the Toyota RAV4 is a similar, though sometimes more expensive, alternative. If you need better gas mileage and a smaller size is acceptable, consider a newer Honda HR-V but you will sacrifice interior space. The CR-V's blend of reliability, practicality, and comfortable ride made it a strong contender in its class.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Honda CR-V a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Honda CR-V is ideal for individuals and small families seeking a reliable and practical compact SUV. It's a great choice for those prioritizing fuel efficiency and a comfortable ride over sporty performance. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price, condition, and maintenance history of the specific vehicle.

Given its age, buying used is the only option. An EX or EX-L trim offers more features than the base LX, but the LX still provides essential functionality. Have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a trusted mechanic to check for common issues like AC problems or rear differential noise. If you find one in good condition with a clean maintenance record, it can be a worthwhile purchase for dependable transportation.

Great car but...

Over all good car but 4 cyl engine lacks power. A 6 cyl should have been an option. Door locks (actuator) not reliable. Transmission ,breaks , and suspension are great.

Great car!

I have owned my CRV since 2008. Other than normal wear and tear, I have had no issues. My only regret is not buying the EX or EXL. The wheels on the LX are ugly.

Just what you would expect from Honda

Not a sexy high performance sport Ute but a very practical vehicle that is just about bullet proof in terms of reliability. It does all things well but not really exceptional in any area.

Best Car I've Owned

This car was perfect for me. It was classy and cute with the luggage rack, practical and reliable, and got good mileage. If it was clean it looked like new!

Most Reliable and the Most Spacious Small SUV

Size is right, not too small enough for a small SUV and definitely not large. I looked lot of SUV in this segment and year. Rav4 trunk is larger but by couple cubic inches. This trunk is larger than BMW X5 and it's contemporaries. Most reliable car, love the 2 tone blue interior. not sure how the AWD performs since mine is not equipped with it. 2007-2011 Most reliable years for CRV

Best car I ever owned

this has been a great little car , maintenance free almost. I am the original owner and now I have 165K+ miles on her. Its getting about time to trade her for a new Babe but I keep thinking perhaps one more year after all she's not costing me any money other than normal maintenance? I'm on my 3rd set of tires! I've been eying a new Acura RDX which is a souped up Honda actually? Or maybe a 2021 CRV EX-L AWD this fall after this crazy election passes into History?

Surprisingly Fun To Drive and Excellent Value

I had to get rid of my 2008 Mercedes ML350 because it was beginning to cost me too much money. Thought I would get something more economical and newer. Wound up getting a CR-V that was the same year as my Mercedes (2008) because the very low mileage on it was very attractive to me. I expected this purchase might be a let down and, therefore, I probably wouldn't own it for long. The CR-V is no Mercedes when it comes to a quiet cabin and quality of interior materials but it more than makes up for those shortages with reliability and fun-to-drive quotient. While the ML350 was lumbering and sluggish, the CR-V is peppy and easy to maneuver in traffic. What I thought was going to be a temporary purchase, I can now see myself driving for years thanks to its' legendary record of reliability. I'm very happy with my choice.
