What Problems Does the 2009 Honda CR-V Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Honda CR-V include excessive oil consumption, particularly in higher-mileage examples. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning compressor failing prematurely. Electrical glitches, such as issues with the power windows or door locks, have also been noted, although these are less common. There have been some recalls related to airbag inflators as part of the broader Takata airbag recall affecting numerous manufacturers. Check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to see if it's affected by any open recalls.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the automatic transmission. While generally reliable, proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes, is crucial to prevent issues. Rust can also be a concern, especially in regions that use road salt during winter. Inspect the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion. Engine mounts may also wear out over time, leading to increased vibration. While the 2009 CR-V is generally a reliable vehicle, addressing these potential issues proactively can help ensure long-term trouble-free ownership.

How long will the 2009 Honda CR-V last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2009 Honda CR-V can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone. Proper oil changes, timely replacement of fluids, and addressing minor repairs promptly contribute significantly to longevity. Long-term durability strengths include the engine and transmission, but weaknesses can emerge over time. These include suspension components wearing out, increased oil consumption as piston rings age, and potential rust issues in susceptible areas. Regular inspections and preventative maintenance are key to maximizing its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Honda CR-V features standard tech like a four-speaker audio system with a CD player on the LX trim. The EX trim adds a six-speaker system and steering wheel audio controls. The EX-L boasts a premium audio system with a subwoofer and available navigation.
Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern vehicles but include standard cruise control.
Safety features are more comprehensive, with standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), front airbags, and side airbags.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA are generally good, with the CR-V earning four or five stars in most categories. The IIHS also gave it good ratings in its crash tests. The EX-L trim offered an optional navigation system. While lacking advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking which are now common, the 2009 CR-V provides a solid foundation of essential safety features for its time. The VSA system is especially helpful in maintaining stability in slippery conditions. The standard airbags provide comprehensive occupant protection in the event of a collision.

2009 Honda CR-V Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Honda CR-V ranged from approximately $21,000 to $28,000 depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000. The CR-V has depreciated significantly, but its strong reputation for reliability helps it retain value better than some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and location. Models with lower mileage, clean titles, and documented maintenance records command higher prices. Demand for SUVs also keeps the CR-V's resale value relatively stable. The EX and EX-L trims, with their added features, generally hold their value slightly better than the base LX model.

2009 Honda CR-V Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Honda CR-V is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for its class. Maintenance costs are relatively low due to Honda's reliability and readily available parts. Repairs are also generally affordable. However, potential issues like AC compressor failure or increased oil consumption in higher-mileage vehicles can increase long-term costs. Overall, the CR-V is considered a cost-effective choice for budget-conscious buyers, especially when compared to some of its rivals.

2009 Honda CR-V Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Honda CR-V is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Honda CR-V Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Honda CR-V competes with the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Subaru Forester. In terms of reliability, the CR-V and RAV4 are generally considered top contenders, often surpassing the Rogue and Forester. The RAV4 offers slightly better performance, while the Forester provides standard all-wheel drive, which is an advantage in inclement weather. The Rogue often undercuts the CR-V in price, but this reflects its less stellar reliability record.
The CR-V's features are competitive for its time, but the newer models of these rivals often have more advanced tech. If reliability is paramount, the CR-V or RAV4 are excellent choices. If all-wheel drive is a must, the Forester is a strong contender. If budget is the primary concern, the Rogue might be considered, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. The Mazda CX-5, while newer, offers a more engaging driving experience but might be slightly more expensive to maintain. Ultimately, the CR-V strikes a good balance between reliability, practicality, and price, making it a solid choice for many buyers. The RAV4 is a very similar alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Honda CR-V a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Honda CR-V is ideal for individuals or small families seeking a reliable and practical compact SUV. It's a worthy purchase on the used market, particularly if it has been well-maintained. Look for models with lower mileage and a clean service history. The EX or EX-L trims offer more desirable features. Ensure a pre-purchase inspection to check for potential issues like oil consumption or AC problems. While it may lack the latest tech, its reputation for dependability makes it a smart choice for those prioritizing long-term value and peace of mind. If advanced features are a must, newer models might be a better fit, but at a higher price point.

Second SUV I've owned, it's the best!

So far my new SUV has ran fantastic! Tires are in great shape! Under 100k mileage!! Smooth comfortable ride! Clean, inside and out. I even invested in a Kenwood radio with backup screen, GPS, Bluetooth, and more. Love it even more now! Very happy with my purchase

What a EXCELLENT SUV

Purchased this 2009 LX CRV brand new. This vehicle has been super reliable, maintenance cost have been very reasonable. I only had one mechanical problem with this vehicle. As of June 28,2020 it has 166,000 miles on it. I shipped it off to Denver so that my brother can have a reliable car. My replacement vehicle is a 2019 Honda Ridgeline.

Reliable CRV on November 17, 2019

2014 Honda CR-V

This 2014 Honda suv has been reliable. Currently has 117,000 miles. I've owned Honda Civic, and Honda Accord. Both had over 300,000 miles. Definitely will buy another Honda. Looking at the Pathfinder or the Pilot, after my CRV hit 300,000 miles.

An All-Around Good SUV

I sold a 2019 Kia Sportage (Which I loved) because I had two newly licensed young drivers in my family. I needed something that I wouldn't be afraid to let them drive when they weren't driving my pick-up truck. I drove a Hyundai Santa Fe, VW Tiguan, Acura RDX and Ford Escape (all around $11,000 used). I settled on the Honda CRV because it felt like it had the best qualities of all these other cars rolled into one. And it was one-owner, and meticulously taken care of. There is something very subtle and almost indescribable about Honda vehicles. We have had 5 different Hondas (including a sweet 1995 Del Sol VTEC 5 speed (red)) and they all exude a sense of quality build, controlled handling, conservative but handsome design and a feeling of thoughtful execution. The 2009 CRV-EX that I found with 59K has that feeling. It's not the quietest and the engine is not the most powerful but everything, down to the feel of the knobs and the way the dash is laid out, just feels right. There is lots of space, the back seats are really ample, and folding down the rear seats gives room to haul over-sized things. The car is plenty quiet on the freeway and on smooth roads,. Things can get a little noisy on rough city roads and over highway bridge transitions but mostly driving is reasonably quiet. The suspension is sprung fairly tightly which makes the CRV handle really well but does contribute to some bumpiness. Steering is super, brakes are solid and acceleration is great from a standing start. A bit more HP (like I think they added in 2012 or 2012 ) would have been nice to have but not entirely necessary. I am really happy with my purchase and love driving the CRV, One thing, though. With my bright red 2019 Kia Sportage EX I was almost always the Only one in the parking lot with one. With the light blue CRV I am pretty anonymous and the car fades into a sea of similar SUVs . On the other hand, this beautiful SUV cost me way less than half the cost of the Kia and, though not as modern and eye-catching, it will serve me and my new drivers for many years.
