What Problems Does the 2004 Nissan Sentra Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 Nissan Sentra include issues with the catalytic converter, which can fail prematurely, triggering the "check engine" light and requiring costly replacement. Rust is also a common concern, particularly in areas with road salt. Owners should inspect the undercarriage, wheel wells, and rocker panels for signs of corrosion.

Automatic transmission problems, such as slipping or rough shifting, have been reported, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. Regular transmission fluid changes can help mitigate this risk. Some owners have experienced issues with the mass airflow sensor (MAF), which can cause poor engine performance.

Recalls for the 2004 Nissan Sentra have addressed issues like potential fuel leaks due to faulty fuel pump brackets. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the automatic transmission and the potential for rust. The 2.5L engine in the SE-R models, while offering more power, has been known to consume oil at a higher rate than the 2.0L engine.

How long will the 2004 Nissan Sentra last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Nissan Sentra can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service with regular oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing issues promptly. However, long-term durability is heavily influenced by maintenance habits and driving conditions. Weaknesses over time include rust, particularly in colder climates. The automatic transmission can also become a point of failure if not properly maintained. The 2.5L engine in the SE-R models can develop oil consumption issues, requiring more frequent monitoring and top-offs. Overall, diligent care is essential for maximizing the lifespan of a 2004 Sentra.

This vehicle is superior in terms of performance with over 100k miles on it. The car drives as if it was a sports car on the highway. I'm very surprised with this vehicle. The price seems reasonable taking in factor age and mileage.

Everything functioned fine and was my reliable transportation from work and home for several years. It is a comfortable ride and does great on gas. The cruise control is also a great feature.
Negative Owner Reviews
Sentra Wrecker
This was my first car back in 2008, when gas was ridiculous. The main reason I got it was because of the 30+ miles/gallon. It turned out to be an OK car. Car was purchased with 86,000 miles on it. First, the reliability wasn't the greatest. The first thing that happened was not too long after the car was purchased was the engine belt broke and the car shook a lot. Replaced it. Then, about 5,000 miles later, the thermometer broke and the car overheated, blowing the head gasket. This forced the car the drive very odd, like flooring it and not accelerating at all, and the engine would miss. Anyways, that was a nice $1300 to replace. About 20,000 miles past with no problems. Then, at about 100,000 miles, the internal computer over-heated while driving and the car shut off. I would pull it over, but the car wouldn't start. Had to wait for it cool down and drive another 5 miles before it happened again. Got the internal computer replaced for $500. Then, I totaled it about 1,000 miles after that happened. Even though it wasn't the most reliable car, I loved it and was very upset when it was gone. The sound system was awesome, plus you have a jack to hook your iPod up to. A/C worked well and had astounding handling and control. Not to mention the 30 miles/gallon. The sunglasses compartment was a nice feature, too. But I hated those dang cup holders. Anything taller than a can of coke would block access to A/C control. So, I just mostly used the rear cup holders which were actually easy to reach. The trunk had a good amount of space for such a small car. Overall, a good, Eco-friendly car with a few nice features. But reliability is a concern. But, it might have just been the people who serviced it. I would recommend this spite somewhat lower-tier ratings.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Nissan Sentra offered relatively basic tech and safety features for its time. Entertainment features typically included a standard AM/FM radio, with options for a CD player and cassette player on higher trims. There were no built-in navigation or advanced infotainment systems available. Driver-assistance features were limited to standard power steering and anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option.

Safety features included standard front airbags. Side-impact airbags were optional on some trims. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional on most trims and standard on the SE-R models. There were no electronic stability control systems available.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary. The 2004 Sentra generally received decent ratings for frontal and side-impact protection, but these ratings should be verified on the NHTSA website for specific configurations. IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings are also available and provide further insight into the vehicle's crashworthiness.

Overall, the 2004 Sentra focused on providing essential features at an affordable price point, with limited emphasis on advanced technology or driver-assistance systems compared to modern vehicles. Optional features could enhance safety, but many contemporary tech features were absent.

2004 Nissan Sentra Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Nissan Sentra had a starting MSRP of around $13,000 for the base model, with higher trims like the SE-R reaching towards $19,000. Currently, used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending heavily on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to age and the introduction of newer models. Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition, documented maintenance history, and the presence of desirable features like ABS or the SE-R performance package. Rust-free examples command a premium, while neglected vehicles sell for considerably less.

2004 Nissan Sentra Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Nissan Sentra is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its age and classification. Fuel economy is decent, especially with the 2.0L engine. Maintenance is relatively straightforward, and parts are readily available and affordable. However, potential repairs like catalytic converter replacement or transmission issues can increase costs. Long-term ownership costs are heavily influenced by maintenance habits; neglected vehicles will likely incur higher repair bills. Overall, it's considered a cost-effective option if properly maintained.

2004 Nissan Sentra Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Nissan Sentra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Nissan Sentra Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Nissan Sentra competed against rivals like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda 3. In terms of reliability, the Sentra is generally comparable to the Corolla and Civic, though some argue the Corolla has a slight edge. The Civic and Mazda 3 offered more engaging handling and a more refined interior. Feature-wise, the Sentra was typically less equipped than the Civic and Mazda 3, especially in base trims. Price-wise, the Sentra was often slightly more affordable than the Civic and Corolla when new.

For performance, the SE-R trims gave the Sentra a competitive edge against base models of its rivals, but the sporty trims of the Civic (Si) and Mazda 3 (Mazdaspeed3 - later years) offered superior performance overall. If reliability and affordability are paramount, the Toyota Corolla is a strong alternative. If driving enjoyment is a higher priority, the Honda Civic or Mazda 3 might be better choices. The Sentra SE-R offers a decent balance of sportiness and value for those on a budget but comes with potential oil consumption concerns.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Nissan Sentra a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Nissan Sentra is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and fuel-efficient compact car. It's a good choice for students, commuters, or anyone needing basic transportation. Whether it's worth buying depends on the specific vehicle's condition and price. A well-maintained example with a clean title and no major rust can be a worthwhile purchase. The base models are generally the most reliable, while the SE-R offers a sportier experience but with potential drawbacks. Avoid examples with significant rust or signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended before committing to a purchase.

Very Reliable Car If Taken Care Of..

My 2004 Nissan Sentra S1.8.. Bought this Car with 157,000 miles.. At 1st this Car was Amazing. It was like driving A little Sport Car. Everywhere I go it turn heads. Good Handling, When I hit the Gas pedal it Goes This Car Hates to Be stuck in Traffic, Very Zippy. 5 to 6 months later I had to do A lot of Repair Work. Parts are Easy to get. Mechanic Said Car will Run for a long time. My Sentra Seen Mechanic Shops Every other 3 Months. It Never Let me and Family down. Always Start any Weather. Took the Car 162,000 + miles. Then I noticed Suspension was wearing, Slow Oil leak. Then transmission was Slow to get in right gear. At Red lights & Traffic felt like it wanted to shut off Never did. This Car Uses Oil like Crazy. Need Regular Repairs was Needed. It was time to let it go.. I will miss my Nissan..

Get what you pay for

Haven’t had many problems in the year I’ve had my 1.8L. The interior has lots of great features, but everything feels cheap. The seats stain easily, and pretty much all of the plastic cubbies are broken. Otherwise, not a bad car.

Faithful Sentra 146K mi.

Well, it has good performance for it's class. The seats are comfy for it's class. the interior is well designed with an overhead compartment for your sunglasses that is so handy I am surprised it's not in every car. MPG is very good. Maintenance is very low, much lower than my Hondas. Handling is average. Feel of controls and interior is very good for the class. Only interior problem is gas pedal is a little awkward. I didn't get cruise control as the upgrade package that contained it was pricey for the content and the only good thing in it was the cruise control. Caveat: this is a 2004, I was given a late model rental at the air port and it kinda sucked.(2015) The motor was more noisy, the car was slower, handling worse and steering feel worse. So the reputation for reliability is good but, if buying a newer model take a long test drive, make sure you like the feel
