2016 Nissan Sentra Review: A Budget Friendly Comfortable Compact Sedan

Rating: 4.35
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Nissan Sentra is a compact sedan, part of the seventh generation (2013-2019). Key trims included the S, FE+ S, SV, SR, and SL. The pricing range when new was approximately $16,780 to $22,300. The Sentra's popularity stems from its spacious interior, fuel efficiency, and affordable price point, making it a practical choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable daily driver. It offers a comfortable ride and user-friendly technology.
The Good

The 2016 Nissan Sentra offers a comfortable and spacious cabin appealing to those valuing practicality. Its fuel efficiency is a major plus, saving money at the pump. While not a performance car, its reliability provides peace of mind. The attractive price point makes it a value proposition, appealing to budget-conscious buyers who want a dependable and comfortable ride.

The Bad

The 2016 Nissan Sentra's weaknesses include its somewhat uninspired handling and acceleration. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) has been a source of some complaints regarding reliability and driving feel. The interior materials, while functional, aren't the most luxurious. Potential buyers should inspect the CVT's service history carefully.

What Problems Does the 2016 Nissan Sentra Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Nissan Sentra often revolve around the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Some owners have reported issues such as shuddering, hesitation, and premature failure. It's crucial to check the CVT's maintenance history and listen for any unusual noises or behavior during a test drive. There have been recalls related to the airbags and other safety components. Always check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information. Long-term reliability concerns primarily center on the CVT's lifespan. While some units last well over 100,000 miles with proper maintenance (fluid changes at recommended intervals), others have failed much earlier. Other potential issues include minor electrical problems and wear and tear on suspension components, particularly in areas with poor road conditions. Some owners have also reported issues with the paint quality. Prior to purchase, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to identify any potential problems.

How long will the 2016 Nissan Sentra last?

With regular maintenance, a 2016 Nissan Sentra can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Longevity heavily depends on adhering to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule, particularly CVT fluid changes. The CVT is often the weakest link; neglecting its maintenance significantly reduces its lifespan. Engine durability is generally good if oil changes and other routine services are performed. Over time, expect typical wear items like brakes, tires, and suspension components to require replacement. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt.

I bought this car new in 2016. I have had all the required maintenance done. The car started performing worse and worse. Rough acceleration and then started dying after driving for more than 30 minutes at a time. The cv transmission completely failed at not even 30,000 miles.

Our car hit 30k miles and we had to replace both front hub assemblys. Stiff riding you feel every little crack in the road and the tire noise was horrible we had to replace them after only 10k miles

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Nissan Sentra offers a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its class. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and a four-speaker audio system. Higher trims like the SV and SL add NissanConnect with mobile apps, a five-inch or larger touchscreen display, satellite radio, and a rearview camera. Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, typically found on the SL trim or as optional packages.

Entertainment features vary by trim, with higher trims offering upgraded audio systems and larger touchscreen displays.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. The 2016 Nissan Sentra received good crash-test ratings from both the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the NHTSA. The IIHS gave it a "Top Safety Pick" award. NHTSA awarded it an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. These ratings contribute to the Sentra's appeal as a safe and reliable choice for families and commuters.

2016 Nissan Sentra Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Nissan Sentra had a starting MSRP of around $16,780 when new, with higher trims reaching up to $22,300. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $14,000, depending on the trim, mileage, and condition. The Sentra has depreciated significantly since its original price. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and location. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and higher trim levels (like the SL) tend to command higher prices. A well-documented maintenance history also improves resale value. The CVT's condition is a significant factor impacting the selling price.

2016 Nissan Sentra Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Nissan Sentra is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower than average for its class. Fuel economy is a strong point, reducing running costs. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is affordable. However, potential CVT repairs can be expensive. Careful maintenance and timely CVT fluid changes are essential to avoid costly repairs. Overall, the Sentra's low purchase price and good fuel economy make it a budget-friendly option, but budgeting for potential CVT issues is prudent.

2016 Nissan Sentra Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Nissan Sentra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Nissan Sentra Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Nissan Sentra competes with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Sentra lags behind the Civic and Mazda3, which offer more engaging driving experiences. Feature-wise, it's generally competitive, particularly in higher trims. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Toyota Corolla is typically more reliable overall, especially regarding transmission longevity. Price is where the Sentra often shines, typically being more affordable than the Civic and Corolla.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota Corolla: Renowned for its reliability and strong resale value.
  • Honda Civic: Offers a more engaging driving experience and updated features.
  • Mazda3: Known for its sporty handling and stylish design.
  • Hyundai Elantra: Provides excellent value with a long warranty and a feature-rich package.

If reliability is a top priority, the Corolla is a better choice. If you prefer a more engaging driving experience, the Civic or Mazda3 are preferable. If value is paramount, the Hyundai Elantra is a strong contender. The Sentra occupies a middle ground, offering a blend of affordability, features, and decent fuel economy, but with some caveats regarding CVT reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Nissan Sentra a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Nissan Sentra is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and fuel-efficient commuter car with a spacious interior. It's worth buying *used*, but only after a thorough inspection, particularly of the CVT. Prioritize models with documented CVT maintenance history. The SV or SL trims offer a better balance of features and value. Avoid the base S trim unless price is the absolute primary concern. It's a good option if you prioritize affordability and fuel economy over driving excitement, and if you are prepared for potential CVT maintenance or repair costs. Consider alternatives like the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic if long-term reliability is a top priority.

Affordable and very average vehicle.

The car is as average as it gets. Highlights include the exterior styling and amazing legroom even in the rear seats fitting all passengers comfortably. The cabin is quiet and the price is very affordable. Lowlights are the transmission as it is jerky after 10 mph. Once the second gear kicks in it is smooth until you reach 65. The car chooses not to shift at high speeds at times. Driving at 65 mph rpms are at 3.5-4.0 indicating a failure for the final gear entering. Purchased the Sentra base model and the battery needed replacement after just 1 year. The mass air flow sensor needed replacement at 75000. Seats are firm and uncomfortable on long trips. The radio was replaced immediately with a Kenwood and Rockford fosgate speakers were added as the Stock radio's fm sounded like some of my A.M radios in my home. Exterior paint has many rock chips from road travel and scratches easily. Acceleration is so so even in sport mode. The biggest knock is the transmission as it has a recall on it. If I could turn back the clock I would have leased and not bought so I could turn it back in. Nissan CVTs are not engineered well and if I go back to Nissan it will be a manual transmission. Won't buy Nissan CVT anything again. Not impressed.
