What Problems Does the 2012 Nissan Sentra Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Nissan Sentra often revolve around the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Owners have reported issues such as slipping, jerking, and complete transmission failure at relatively low mileage. This is a major long-term reliability concern and should be thoroughly inspected before purchasing a used model. Another common issue involves the air conditioning system, with reports of compressor failure or refrigerant leaks. Some owners have also noted problems with the electric power steering, leading to a loss of power assist.

Recalls for the 2012 Sentra are relatively limited, but it is crucial to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding safety recalls related to airbags or other critical components. Long-term reliability concerns primarily stem from the potential for CVT failure and A/C issues. Regular maintenance and fluid changes, especially for the CVT, are vital to prolong the car's lifespan. Addressing any unusual noises or performance issues promptly can help prevent more significant problems down the road. Be aware of potential problems with the catalytic converter. Model years prior to 2012 also exhibited CVT issues, so this is a trend to be aware of.

How long will the 2012 Nissan Sentra last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Nissan Sentra can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, the CVT transmission is a significant factor in its long-term durability. Regular CVT fluid changes (every 30,000 miles) are crucial to prevent premature failure. Weaknesses over time include potential A/C compressor failure, electrical issues (particularly with sensors), and general wear and tear on suspension components. Rust can become a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt.

I have replaced all four cylinders. I have replaced the brakes four times. I just replace the front end. I have spent over $10,000 in repairs. Would I buy another Nissan Sentra no.

It is a good running car that do not burn much gas or give you problems , it’s a smooth running car, and have good pickup speed

I absolutely loved my nissan sentra. It was my 2nd car and could have lasted me another 10 years if I didn't have two large dogs needing to be hauled around. Spacious for a sedan, back seats can fold down and fit large items in the trunk/backseat. I rarely ever had problems with this vehicle in the 8 years of owning it and if I did, it was easy to fix and not breaking the bank. Would highly recommend!

I have 2012 Sentra that just failed transmission. The cost of repair - $4K. When buying this car i had now idea 8 years is its lifespan. They KNOW about this problem and extended warranty for 2003-2010 models but not later models. Nissan said they "fixed" the problem. THEY LIED. Now the only way to me to do it is a lawsuit. There was a lawsuit filed and settled. PLEASE READ about it before buying Nissan. I wish I had. You can find a lot of good reviews online - don't believe it, it is from people who just bought it or from dealers. Mine is a real story how reliable Nissans are after 8 years. You need to spend not $500 or $600 on minor repair of older car, you'll need $4K. We have 2 Nissans. Guess where I am going for my new car? Anywhere but Nissan.

My first and last experience with King Windward Nissan. It all started with a flyer they sent to my father and their website falsely stating that the service department is open at 0630 Mondays through Saturdays. They actually open at 0700 hours, so I waited from 0615 to 0700 hours. Then after being seen by Chris S. the service writer at 0705 hours and telling him what and why the car was brought in for servicing he recommended that we replace all four TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System light went on) and that we were due for tire rotation. An oil change was also due and we had a request that the rear plastic frame to the window which is a cosmetic problem be addressed. I walked home and spoke to my father (since it was his car and I did not want him to walk home being 87 years old) he decided that he would cancel the TPMS service because Chris quoted that it would cost $565 dollars to replace all four sensors. My father called at 0810 and was told that they could do the other requests and that the TPMS would be canceled. I received an call from Chris at around 0817 with him telling me it was too late. They had already installed the TPMS on all four tires. Common people, from 0705 to 0817, to remove all four tires from the vehicle, release all the air, take the tire off, remove and then install four sensors, inflate the tires again, check for leaks, and rotate tires all took about an hour since I dropped it off? Unless they have four people working on one tire it may be possible. I then told Chris what was said to my father about the sensors request was not a problem and would be canceled, he got arrogant with me and said, "I'm the service writer, and I'm telling you it too late and we can remove it but I am going to charge you for labor." So, I told him leave it then. Chris also indicated when I initially dropped the car off that they would call me regarding the plastic frame to tell me the cost. Well, did not receive a call. Then if they had already replaced the sensor the only other thing that the car went in was for the oil change. Remember I spoke with Chris at 0817 hours, well, we did not get a call from Chris or anyone from Nissan so, I called the NEXT DAY. Then I was told it was ready for pick-up. I asked why I was not notified when the car was ready and the female who was polite apologized and said she does not know why Chris did not call. I can speculate why Chris did not call, they did not have the sensors replaced when he called me at 0817 hours and that they needed time to replace it. My wife actually needs a car since we gave our daughter her car, and I thought about buying a Nissan. I think we are going to buy elsewhere. And if we end up selecting a NISSAN IT WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE FROM WINDWARD NISSAN!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Nissan Sentra's built-in tech and entertainment features are relatively basic for its time. Standard features on lower trims include a CD player, auxiliary audio input, and power windows and locks. Higher trims may offer features like a premium audio system, keyless entry/ignition, and Bluetooth connectivity (depending on the package).

Driver-assistance features are limited, with standard safety features including anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain). There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available on this model year.

Optional features, depending on the trim level and package selected, could include a sunroof, leather upholstery, and upgraded audio system. Navigation was not a factory option, but aftermarket solutions are readily available.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific details. While the Sentra generally performed adequately in crash tests, checking the specific ratings for the 2012 model year is recommended for informed safety assessment. Remember that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2012.

2012 Nissan Sentra Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Nissan Sentra had an MSRP ranging from approximately $16,000 to $20,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Sentra has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of the problematic CVT transmission. Models with well-documented maintenance and lower mileage will command higher prices.

2012 Nissan Sentra Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Nissan Sentra is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low. Fuel efficiency is good, especially with the FE+ model. Routine maintenance is relatively affordable. However, potential CVT repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Regular maintenance, particularly CVT fluid changes, is essential to minimize the risk of costly repairs. Parts are readily available and relatively inexpensive.

2012 Nissan Sentra Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Nissan Sentra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Nissan Sentra Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2012 Nissan Sentra competes with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Sentra lags behind the Mazda3 and Civic, which offer more engaging driving dynamics. Feature-wise, the Hyundai Elantra often provides more standard equipment for the price. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Corolla and Civic generally have better reputations for long-term reliability than the Sentra, primarily due to the Sentra's CVT issues.

Price-wise, the Sentra is often more affordable on the used market than the Corolla or Civic, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the potential for costly CVT repairs should be factored into the overall cost.

Alternatives to the 2012 Sentra include the Toyota Corolla for its reliability, the Honda Civic for its performance and reputation, and the Mazda3 for its sporty driving experience. If reliability is a top priority, the Corolla or Civic are better choices. If you are prioritizing fuel efficiency and are willing to take a risk with the CVT the Sentra is an option. However, given the potential CVT issues, the other options are better bets.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Nissan Sentra a Good Sedan?

The 2012 Nissan Sentra is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a fuel-efficient and relatively spacious compact sedan. It's worth buying *used* if the price is significantly lower than comparable models and a thorough pre-purchase inspection (especially of the CVT) is performed. Avoid if possible. Specific trims don't drastically alter the ownership experience, but higher trims offer more features. However, the problematic CVT transmission is a significant concern. Consider other options like the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic for greater long-term reliability, even if they cost slightly more upfront. Only buy if you get it very cheap and can do your own repairs or are prepared to scrap it if the transmission goes.

Risk of CVT transmission, AC and struts are risky

I owned two 2012 Nissan Sentra for Turo 1. CVT transmission risky very high risk to fail - no way to fix but 4K for the part of a new transmission. 2. Blower or its relay easily go bad. Costly to fix because it cost 5hrs labor 3. Starter easily go bad. Man, I fixed it myself learned how to fix it not hard to replace but you will experience staring cars for several times to turn it on 4. Struts are easily go bad. I replaced them myself parts are 150 from EBay but it takes me 3hrs to replace both of them 5. The car likes a paper made toy. Noisy very noisy in a windy weather Now I don’t trust Nissan cars. cVT transmission is a potential risk for all Nissan cars all years. Buy a new Nissan is okay because you are in the lemon.

Winter,Spring,Summer,Fall

I take care of my baby, i totally transformed the car , its pimped out now . Bought this car at 60k Miles in 2017 and now has 215k miles present day. I will say , My oil changes were every 5000miles with full synthetic oil used. I change the cvt fluid every 50000 miles or once a year for me cause i have heavier rims and tires on the car. I must say this is the best car i have owned by far and if you love it , it will love you.

Decent!

The CVT is garbage and it looks like a metallic chicken nugget. Buy a manual, the SE-R or just buy an older model. If your kid needs a car, it's a fantastic first car! It's just fun enough to whip about and just boring enough to think twice about trying to challenge that Mustang off the line.
