Rating: 3.62
Based on 100 Owner Reviews â–¶
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Nissan Sentra is a compact sedan, part of the seventh generation (2013-2019). Key trims included the S, FE+ S, SV, SR, and SL. Its popularity stems from its spacious interior and focus on fuel efficiency. New, it ranged roughly from $16,000 to $20,000. The Sentra offered a comfortable ride and user-friendly features at an affordable price, appealing to budget-conscious buyers.
The Good

The 2013 Sentra offers excellent fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers seeking savings. It also provides a comfortable and spacious interior, which provides a relaxed driving experience. Reliable enough for peace of mind. Its sleek design is a plus. Affordable pricing makes it a strong value proposition for budget-minded consumers.

The Bad

The 2013 Sentra's weaknesses include somewhat uninspired handling and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that can feel sluggish. Some owners have reported CVT issues, so regular maintenance is crucial. The interior materials can feel low-quality. Engine performance is adequate, but not exciting.

What Problems Does the 2013 Nissan Sentra Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Nissan Sentra often revolve around the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Some owners have experienced shuddering, slipping, or complete failure, sometimes requiring costly replacements. Early model year 2013 Sentras seemed more prone to these CVT issues. Regular CVT fluid changes are crucial to mitigate these problems. Another common complaint involves issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failures and refrigerant leaks. Some owners have also reported problems with the electrical system, such as malfunctioning sensors or issues with the infotainment system. Nissan issued recalls for the 2013 Sentra related to issues such as fuel leaks due to faulty fuel pressure sensors, which could increase the risk of a fire. Check the NHTSA website for a complete list of recalls. Long-term reliability can be affected by these potential CVT and A/C issues, so a thorough inspection and maintenance history review are recommended before purchasing a used 2013 Sentra.

How long will the 2013 Nissan Sentra last?

With good maintenance, a 2013 Nissan Sentra can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. This translates to roughly 10-15 years of service, depending on annual mileage. However, the CVT is the main long-term durability concern. Regular CVT fluid changes (every 30,000 miles) are crucial to extend its lifespan. Other potential weaknesses include gradual wear of suspension components and potential for corrosion in colder climates. Neglecting scheduled maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

I’ve owned this car since new and it is a replacement for a prior 2008 Sentra which I was crushed inside of. That vehicle was entirely crushed in the front where I was pushed into another vehicle after being hit from the rear. The rear of the vehicle was also crushed all the way to the seating compartment and I had to be cut out of this car! Bottom line is when I got out of the hospital and we went to look at it in the tow yard the exterior was completely destroyed yet the interior cabin was almost completely intact, thus probably saving my life and limb? Therefore, when I went looking for my replacement vehicle I purchased the Exact Same car just a different Color...lol

This car was a ticking time bomb the moment I got it. The car would idle roughly when I was stopped at a red light and the check engine light was always on due to some fuel failure (I changed the MAF twice and it didn't clear). One time, it completely shut off while I was waiting to turn left into a parking lot. The previous owners failed to note the front, passenger side window doesn't roll up and the airbag sensor wasn't working. The nail in the coffin was the car failed to accelerate up the hill to the speed limit when the light changes from red to green. I traded that thing in. I did not want to deal with a hefty repair bill.

CVT broke down at 104K miles. I have to spend $4500-$5000 for replacement. This car is really driven. Is Nissan reimbursing this cost? CVT Issue Yes
Bad car
Horrible car, always broken. Do not buy a Nissan Sentra. Transmission broken twice, air condition not working, problem with Electrical system. Big mistake to buy a Nissan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Nissan Sentra offers a reasonable set of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and a 4-speaker audio system. Higher trims (SV, SR, SL) added features like NissanConnect with mobile apps, a 5.8-inch touchscreen display, navigation system, and a rearview camera. Driver-assistance features were limited; a rearview camera was optional on higher trims, but advanced features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available. Standard safety features included antilock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and front and side airbags.
The 2013 Nissan Sentra received good crash-test ratings. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" designation. Optional features included a premium Bose audio system and dual-zone automatic climate control. Base models lacked a lot of convenience features, making the mid-level SV trim a good balance of features and price.

2013 Nissan Sentra Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Nissan Sentra ranged from approximately $16,000 to $20,000, depending on the trim level. Currently, used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Sentra has depreciated considerably, consistent with most vehicles in its class. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable features. A well-maintained Sentra with lower mileage and a clean title will command a higher price. The CVT issues negatively impact the resale values.

2013 Nissan Sentra Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Nissan Sentra is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its classification as a compact sedan. Fuel costs are also favorable, especially with the FE+ S model. Routine maintenance is relatively inexpensive. However, potential CVT repairs can be costly, and should be factored into long-term ownership considerations. Overall, excluding major CVT issues, the Sentra offers affordable ownership.

2013 Nissan Sentra Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Nissan Sentra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Nissan Sentra Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Nissan Sentra competes with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. The Sentra often lags behind the Civic and Mazda3 in terms of driving performance and handling. The Corolla arguably matches the Sentra in reliability. While the Hyundai Elantra offers more features for the price, the Sentra might be seen as more reliable.

Compared to the Corolla, the Sentra has similar fuel efficiency. The Civic and Mazda3 offer more engaging driving experiences. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Corolla is a strong alternative. For a more fun-to-drive compact car, the Mazda3 is a better option. If you are looking for more features for your money, then the Hyundai Elantra is worth consideration. In terms of price, the Sentra is competitive, but it's crucial to weigh its potential CVT issues against the slightly higher price of competitors known for better reliability. If you are concerned about the CVT, consider alternatives like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Nissan Sentra a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Nissan Sentra is a decent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a fuel-efficient and spacious compact sedan. It's ideal for commuters and small families who prioritize affordability and practicality over driving excitement. It's worth buying *used* if you find one with a well-documented maintenance history, *especially* regarding CVT fluid changes. Avoid models with a history of CVT problems. The SV or SL trims offer a better balance of features compared to the base S model. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended, focusing on the CVT's condition.

I just bought a 2013 Sentra SL.

I just bought a 2013 Sentra SL. After buy8ng it I read some very bad reviews, regarding extensive repairs, costing thousands. I'm a low income, retired Senior, so this is all bad news to me. Mostly concerned about the issues they have had with their transmissions. My vehicle has 78,000km. Should I be worried!?

Love it.

I bought a 2013 Sentra new in 2013. The tranny and the engine just went at 141K miles. I dropped a newer engine in (only 36K miles on it) and a brand new Nissan tranny. Cost me $6,900 for both at the Nissan dealer (including labor), but now I have a practically new car. It’s my baby. It still looks showroom new, inside and out.

Transmission is junk

I bought my 2013 nissan in 2019 from a private party. They were the only owner. Everything was fine until 2022 at 120,000 miles the CVT transmission went out and I had to pay $4,019 to fix it. The transmission that replaced this one only has a 12 month warranty. Looking at information from other people there is no way of knowing how long the transmission in these cars will last because they are total junk. I will never buy another car with a CVT transmission.

Avoid Nissan TOTALLY! YOU WILL REGRET NISSAN

I bought a brand new 2013 Nissan Sentra SR (1.8 w/ CVT transmission) that totally failed at 70k. I was in college and this car totally ruined my life, as I was depending on it for commutes to work and college. Nissan refuses to honor warranties and priced me at 5k for replacement. I replaced transmission and within 2 years, the new rebuilt transmission is now revving out at 30-35mph and shakes terribly. I will never own another nissan again, total disposable hunks of garbage!

Bad CVT

CVT went bad at 69,000 miles (had intermittent issues that in hindsight indicate bad CVT) and Nissan won't replace being out of warranty by date although it is good for 84,000 miles

CVT transmission just fails and they know it

Transmission is bad. At 95,000 took it in and said it was jerking I thought transmission they kept it 10days said joints were the problem waited on special grease drove it maybe two more than now it’s the car transmission and I’m over warranty. Nissan didn’t care. 17,000 and just reached 100,000 Toyota Subaru Honda Kia all get 200,000 plus The Government should make them do a recall. I can’t afford to get this fixed or another vehicle driving a 2004 jeep with 250,000 miles now watching my 2013 just sit
