The 2023 GMC Yukon XL is a full-size SUV, extending the already spacious Yukon for maximum passenger and cargo capacity. Part of the fifth generation (2021-present), it's available in trims like SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. The Yukon XL stands out for its refined interior, powerful engine options, and impressive towing capability, making it a popular choice for large families and those needing substantial hauling capacity. Pricing ranges approximately from $58,000 to over $90,000 depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2023 GMC Yukon XL excels in performance with its robust engine options and smooth ride. It offers exceptional comfort with a spacious, well-appointed interior. The Denali trims, in particular, boast a luxurious design appealing to emotional buyers, while practical buyers appreciate its immense cargo space, towing prowess, and overall versatility for family needs.

The Bad

The 2023 GMC Yukon XL's size can make it challenging to maneuver in tight spaces. Fuel economy is subpar, especially with the larger engines. What Problems Does the 2023 GMC Yukon XL Have?

While the 2023 GMC Yukon XL is relatively new, some frequently reported problems with this generation (2021-present) include issues with the infotainment system (freezing, glitches), electrical system malfunctions (sensor errors), and occasional transmission problems (hard shifting). Some owners have also reported concerns about the adaptive suspension, particularly in Denali models, although this is less prevalent in the 2023 model year compared to earlier years of the generation. Some recalls may occur; therefore it's important to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, specifically regarding the complexity of the electronic components and the potential for wear and tear on the adaptive suspension systems. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial for mitigating potential problems. Some owners have noted potential oil consumption issues with the V8 engines over time, so monitoring oil levels is recommended. Check online forums and consumer reports for the most up-to-date information on owner experiences.

How long will the 2023 GMC Yukon XL last?

With proper maintenance, the 2023 GMC Yukon XL can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely servicing of the transmission, and proactive replacement of wear items are essential. Long-term durability may be affected by the complex electronic systems, and the adaptive suspension (if equipped) could require eventual repairs. Watch for potential oil consumption issues in the V8 engines. Rust can also be a factor in colder climates where road salt is used, so undercarriage washing is recommended.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 GMC Yukon XL comes standard with a range of tech features, including a large touchscreen infotainment system (typically 10.2-inch), Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and multiple USB ports. Higher trims offer features such as a premium Bose audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens, and a head-up display.
Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and forward collision alert. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and enhanced automatic emergency braking. The Denali Ultimate trim often includes GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving system on compatible highways.
Safety features also include a suite of airbags, stability control, and traction control. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) websites for the latest crash-test ratings. It generally performs well in crash tests, offering solid occupant protection. Overall, the 2023 Yukon XL provides a comprehensive set of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.

2023 GMC Yukon XL Prices and Market Value

The 2023 GMC Yukon XL had a starting MSRP of around $58,000, with higher trims like the Denali Ultimate exceeding $90,000. Used market prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to find used 2023 models ranging from the low $50,000s to the high $80,000s. Depreciation is relatively moderate compared to some other SUVs, especially for well-maintained models and those with desirable options. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and trim level. Denali trims typically hold their value better due to their luxury features and appeal.

2023 GMC Yukon XL Cost of Ownership

The 2023 GMC Yukon XL is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its size and value. Fuel consumption is significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are average for a large SUV, but repairs can be expensive, particularly for the complex electronic components and adaptive suspension. Long-term ownership costs, including depreciation, fuel, insurance, and maintenance, can be substantial, making it less economical compared to smaller vehicles. Budget accordingly for these expenses.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 GMC Yukon XL Compare to Other Minivan?

The 2023 GMC Yukon XL competes with the Chevrolet Suburban, Ford Expedition Max, and Jeep Wagoneer L. The Suburban is mechanically similar, offering a comparable experience at a potentially slightly lower price point. The Expedition Max boasts a powerful turbocharged engine and independent rear suspension, offering a more refined ride and often better towing figures. The Wagoneer L provides a stylish interior and a compelling blend of luxury and capability.
In terms of reliability, the Yukon XL is generally comparable to its rivals, although individual experiences may vary. Feature-wise, the Yukon XL offers a good balance of technology and comfort, especially in the Denali trims. However, the Expedition Max's independent rear suspension gives it an edge in ride quality.
Price-wise, the Yukon XL sits in the middle of the pack. A better alternative depends on individual priorities. If budget is a primary concern, the Suburban might be preferable. If ride quality and towing are paramount, the Expedition Max could be a better choice. If a luxurious interior and distinctive styling are desired, the Wagoneer L is worth considering. All are capable vehicles and offer similar levels of practicality. It really comes down to personal preference.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 GMC Yukon XL a Good Minivan?

The 2023 GMC Yukon XL is ideal for large families needing maximum passenger and cargo space, as well as those requiring significant towing capacity. It's a worthwhile purchase if these needs outweigh the higher ownership costs and fuel consumption. Consider buying used to save on depreciation, but ensure a thorough inspection and service history check. The SLT trim offers a good balance of features and value. If luxury is a priority, the Denali trims are appealing, but be prepared for a higher price. Ultimately, it's a capable and comfortable SUV that excels in its niche, but careful consideration of its drawbacks is essential.

2023 GMC Yukon XL Diesel is excellent

Ordered a 2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali Diesel 4 wheel drive in March of 2023. Took GM 5 months to pick up the order even though I adjusted a few minor options that were on constraint to have the order picked up (these were items I could purchase the parts and have the dealer install such as illuminated GMC emblem, Denali door sills, illuminated GMC cargo sill, cross rails for roof carrier). I wanted the diesel for the mileage and longevity. I am very satisfied with everything with the vehicle so far. Ordered the 20 inch rims/tires for a better ride. The ride quality is remarkable, so smooth. I drive a combination city/rural each day and I average 25 or more MPG. I have 9000 miles on it so far, and not one single issue with it. It is smooth, quiet, and and packed with technology. Goes through the snow with no problem. I have had 7 Suburbans, Yukon XL's and Escalades and in the past, full size Cadillac Broughams, and this is the best riding vehicle out of all of them. I am very satisfied. The only issue is the price has gone through the roof to purchase new. The Suburban and Yukon XL used to be more affordable new. My previous 2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali has an engine issue (camshaft issue even though the oil was changed at the dealer every 3K miles) at 165K miles and I had to trade it in quickly, so the dealer took it on trade when I ordered the 2023, and they wholesaled it. I was not going to buy another one with the 6.2 liter engine again.I really hope the diesel will go for many miles and years, and so far this vehicle has had no problems what so ever. Very glad I made the decision to try it again with the diesel engine this time. If the diesel was not available I would not have bought another GM full size SUV. Classic Painesville Ohio is the best to work with for sales, service and parts. They kept me posted throughout the purchase process and were very fair with the amount for the trade in and purchase price for the new vehicle.
