Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-size SUV known for its blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability. Part of the WK generation (2005-2010), it features a traditional SUV body style. Key trims include the Laredo, Limited, and Overland. What sets it apart is its robust 4x4 systems and available V8 power, appealing to those needing a versatile vehicle. Original pricing ranged approximately from $30,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers strong performance, especially with the V8 engines, and boasts a rugged, capable design. It provides a comfortable ride for daily driving and off-road adventures. What Problems Does the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee often involve the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause issues with fuel pump relay, stalling, and other electrical malfunctions. Transmission issues, particularly with rough shifting or complete failure, have also been reported. Suspension components, such as ball joints and control arms, can wear out prematurely, leading to noise and handling problems. The 4.7L V8 engine is known to sometimes suffer from valve seat issues, leading to costly repairs. Recalls for this model year have included issues related to airbags and braking systems, so checking the vehicle's VIN for open recalls is crucial. Long-term reliability concerns center around the durability of electronic components and the potential for rust in regions with harsh winters. Early WK models (2005-2007) had more widespread reports of issues; however, some problems persisted in the 2008 model year. Regular maintenance and thorough pre-purchase inspection are essential to mitigate these risks.

How long will the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

A 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with good maintenance, can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Years of service often exceed 15 years with proper care. However, long-term durability is affected by maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled maintenance, particularly oil changes and transmission services, drastically reduces lifespan. Rust can be a significant weakness in areas with road salt. Additionally, electrical components and the TIPM module are known to be points of failure over time. Proper care and addressing issues promptly are critical to extending the vehicle's lifespan.

This car has poor mpg and the cab noise is almost unbearable. The ride is rough and noisy. The cost of the vehicle is outrageous.
jmj429
Needed a winter car and my jeep was the best choice! I could not be happier with it. It is reliable and handles well.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee offered decent built-in tech for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered an upgraded sound system, available navigation system, and Sirius satellite radio. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern standards, but some models included rear parking sensors.
Safety features included standard antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and multiple airbags (front, side curtain). Optional features included side-impact airbags for the front seats.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied, but generally, the Grand Cherokee performed well in frontal and side-impact crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted tests and results should be checked for specific ratings. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2008, so comparing its safety to newer vehicles requires careful consideration. For example, features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking were not available.
Optional features could also include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, appealing to families on long trips.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000 depending on trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, contingent on condition, mileage, and location. The Grand Cherokee has depreciated significantly due to its age and higher running costs compared to newer vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, documented maintenance history, engine type (V8 models often hold slightly more value), and the presence of desirable options like 4x4 or premium trim levels. High mileage and a lack of maintenance records negatively impact its resale value.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee is generally considered costly to own. Insurance costs are moderate, but fuel consumption, particularly with V8 engines, is high. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant due to potential issues like the TIPM, transmission problems, and suspension wear. Long-term ownership costs can escalate if regular maintenance is neglected. While affordable to purchase used, the potential for repairs makes it less economical than some of its competitors. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee competes with vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Grand Cherokee, especially with the V8 engines, offers comparable or superior power and towing capacity. However, its reliability lags behind the Toyota 4Runner. Features are generally on par, but the 4Runner holds its value better. The Ford Explorer offers a more comfortable on-road ride but lacks the Jeep's off-road prowess. The Nissan Pathfinder is a similar alternative, but its reliability is also questionable compared to Toyota.
In terms of price, the Grand Cherokee is often more affordable on the used market than the 4Runner but potentially more expensive to maintain. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota 4Runner is a better alternative, despite the higher price. If on-road comfort and space are more important, the Ford Explorer is a decent choice. However, for a balance of capability and price, the Grand Cherokee can be a good option if you're willing to address its potential maintenance needs. Consider a well-maintained Acura MDX for similar features with potentially better reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee is ideal for those who need a capable SUV with a balance of on-road comfort and off-road ability. It's worth buying used if you understand its potential reliability issues and are prepared for maintenance. Opt for the Limited or Overland trims for added features, but carefully inspect any used model for signs of neglect or previous repairs. The V8 engines offer more power but at the cost of fuel economy. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial to avoid costly surprises. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota 4Runner, but for a blend of capability and price, the Grand Cherokee can be a reasonable choice if bought carefully.

Get the Hemi. You'll thank me later 😉

This thing is a blast to drive! The power of the 5.7 Hemi is just unbelievable, and I've owned many muscle cars. This is an excellent family hauler, as well. The full-time 4WD is always there when you need it, keeping you safe in bad weather and snow. The Limited is very luxurious, too. The only problems I've had in the 4 months I've owned it, was a bad ABS speed sensor, and a faulty oxygen sensor. I hope to own this vehicle for a long time, and when it finally dies, I'll probably by another one. With a Hemi, of course 🙂

Great car if you love to drive

Car was incredibly fast, handled well and very comfortable to drive, with a lot of features unusual for the year. I had the SRT8 which had incredible acceleration and lots of extras. Reliability was decent, but there were some problems with the electrical system and key fob that were frustrating. I owned the car more than 10 years and probably would have kept it until it died if I had not needed to trade it for a different type of vehicle.
