Key trims included the Laredo, Limited, and Overland. The 2006 Grand Cherokee stood out for its rugged design, available 4x4 systems, and powerful engine options. The Good

What Problems Does the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

The 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee is known for several frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, including hard shifting and slipping, are common. Electrical problems, such as issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), can cause various malfunctions. Suspension components, particularly the ball joints and control arms, are prone to wear and tear. The 4.7L V8 engine is susceptible to exhaust manifold bolts breaking.
Rust can be a significant issue, especially in areas with road salt. Water leaks, often stemming from the sunroof or faulty seals, can damage the interior. Recalls for the 2006 model year included issues with the fuel tank and airbags. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the lifespan of the transmission and the potential for costly repairs related to the electrical system. Owners have reported issues with the climate control system, including malfunctioning blend doors. The Quadra-Trac and Quadra-Drive systems require regular maintenance, and failures can be expensive to repair. It is crucial to thoroughly inspect any used 2006 Grand Cherokee for these potential problems before purchase.

How long will the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

A well-maintained 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee can reach 200,000 miles or more. With diligent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing issues promptly, it can easily last 15-20 years. However, neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is affected by rust, particularly in northern climates. Weaknesses include the aforementioned electrical issues, transmission problems, and suspension wear. The 4.7L V8 engine can develop issues with the exhaust manifold bolts over time. Proper maintenance is key to maximizing longevity.

As I read, don't buy unless you can work on it. Plenty of things broke, but the parts are cheap if you can work on it. All four interior door handles broken, but all four replacements were $40, I put them in. Starter motor bad, $160 and very difficult to install, but did it. Exhaust manifold to engine gasket bad. $20 and very difficult to install. Rubber gators over CV joints, cheap, but very hard to install. Advice: watch Youtube video's, take your time, and don't get aggravated, I told you its difficult...Plus all the plastic fasteners and parts are dry and brittle after 17 years.

Great car. If only everything on my life would be as reliable and durable as my Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited automobile. Gas milage is just OK, but everything else is phenomenal! It is blazingly fast! Use the cruise control and comply with the law. Keep up proper maintenance. Research the past history of the car before purchasing. I bought mine at Feslers Dealer in Fairfield Iowa and they were totally honest and reliable. I even received a phone call 1 and a half years later asking how the car is doing! Who else would do that. 5.0 perfect rating.

This car never gave me any issues, has always run great for me and has good gas mileage. This car is so great in the snow, never had any problems driving in those conditions. Great for someone who is looking to by a first car, it is safe and a great ride.
Negative Owner Reviews
Never buy again
This car sucks we've had nothing but trouble constant smell of gas to the point you could die from it so bad ltdoes t start nobody can find out why it's not reliable and another person I spoke to has the same way to go trouble doesn't always work

I?m a big fan of this model of Jeep there?s only a few options to do lifts and it?s honestly rare to see with a suspension lift. Looks beautiful lifted

Purchased this car to prepare for a student about to endure long, hard Buffalo winters. Overall styling appealed and Jeep reputation for good snow/ice performance. First Jeep/Chrysler product owned. Four months in too soon to tell about "legendary" Jeep performance but gas mileage is very disappointing. As to snow/ice performance, wait and see...

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee offered a range of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with satellite radio. Optional features included a navigation system, a DVD entertainment system for rear passengers, and a sunroof.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles but included available features like cruise control and rear parking sensors. Safety features included standard front airbags, side curtain airbags (optional), anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESP). The Grand Cherokee also featured a tire pressure monitoring system.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good performance in frontal and side-impact tests, although specific ratings varied depending on the test criteria. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted crash tests, providing further insights into the vehicle's safety performance. Overall, the 2006 Grand Cherokee provided a decent level of safety and technology for its era, though it lacks many of the advanced features found in newer vehicles. The navigation system, when equipped, was a rudimentary version compared to modern systems.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from approximately $27,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Grand Cherokee has depreciated significantly over time due to its age and higher maintenance costs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, engine type (the HEMI holds value better), and whether it has 4x4. Rust-free examples in good mechanical condition command the highest prices. High mileage and deferred maintenance significantly decrease resale value.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee is generally considered costly to own in the long term. Insurance costs are moderate, but fuel costs, especially with the V8 engines, are high. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant due to potential issues with the transmission, electrical system, and suspension. Long-term ownership costs are further increased by the potential for rust and the need for more frequent repairs as the vehicle ages. It's not an economical choice compared to more modern, fuel-efficient SUVs.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee competed against vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, and Chevrolet TrailBlazer. In terms of performance, the Grand Cherokee, particularly with the HEMI, offered strong acceleration and towing capacity, often exceeding its rivals. Feature-wise, it was competitive, offering comparable amenities. However, its reliability lagged behind the Toyota 4Runner, which is known for its dependability. The Ford Explorer offered a more comfortable ride but lacked the Jeep's off-road prowess. The Nissan Pathfinder offered similar off-road capabilities but suffered from its own reliability issues.
In terms of price, the Grand Cherokee was generally competitive when new. However, its higher long-term maintenance costs make it less appealing compared to more reliable alternatives like the 4Runner in the used market.
Similar alternatives include the Toyota 4Runner (for reliability) and the Ford Explorer (for a more comfortable on-road experience). If reliability is a major concern, the 4Runner is a better choice. If you prioritize on-road comfort and space, the Explorer might be a better fit. The Grand Cherokee offers a unique blend of off-road capability and on-road comfort, but its reliability issues need to be carefully considered.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Wagon?

The 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee is ideal for someone seeking a capable SUV with a classic Jeep design and strong performance, particularly if they need towing capacity and occasional off-road capability. It's worth buying used if you find one in excellent condition with documented maintenance history and a pre-purchase inspection reveals no major issues. The HEMI engine is desirable for its power, but be prepared for lower fuel economy. The Limited or Overland trims offer more features. However, be aware of potential reliability issues and factor in higher long-term maintenance costs. If reliability is a top priority, consider alternatives.

Jeep grand Cherokee 2006

No bulbs for heater control knobs LED have to change whole heater control system to get new lights that they shortly went out why not just put bulbs in there. But no they Saturday and LED bulbs . Problem with seatbelts Frayed through like they were cut. After a while you'll have to push the red button on the seatbelt connector to get it to seat. Passenger side keeps dinging if somebody says they're with a seatbelt on? Spare tire under Jeep you have to take the spare tire down if you want to spray and clean up there and if you don't it will rust I used to get under the car wash and it still wouldn't get up on top of the spare tire. water pump failed at 140,000 miles. Control arms were out another front linkage. Flush lug nuts if they break in Half the cost about $150 to get them chiseled out take them off and put regular Chrome Lugnuts on them .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's basically junk.

I didn't get as lucky with mine as others have, after dumping over 2000 into it in a matter of 6 months I still get front end noise and clunking after new struts, the back end still sags after new rear shocks, the brakes are trash again after 4 months, the ball joints are already on there way out, it has still bump steer, it shifts over bumps, the front diff hums loudly at 40-65, it's awful on gas (it's also a suv but still 15mpg? My Silverado got better and that was a v8) and now it needs tie rods and possibly upper and lower control armsΓƒΒ’Γ’β€šΒ¬Γ‚Β¦. This will be my last WK. just a money pit, a endless one at that.

I like the car a lot, it had 97,000 miles when I purchased it, so I am crossing my fingers that I will not have any issues soon. But it is super comfortable and I love the Hemi.

Great ride, high maintenance, electrical issues.

Totally worth every penny. When I turn the radio on my heat turns off. I have had 19 codes for 3 years. Still runs. I'm replacing the whole front end 2nd time 2 years. It's got 240,000 miles. Wouldn't get it you don't know how to work on your own stuff.
