Drew B | March 31, 2025
The Jeep Grand Cherokee, introduced in 1993, is a mid-size SUV known for its blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability. The 2017 model year is part of the fourth generation (WK2), which started in 2011. Key trims include Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and the high-performance SRT and Trackhawk. Expect a used pricing range from approximately $18,000 to $45,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim. What Problems Does the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee include issues with the Uconnect infotainment system, such as freezing, slow response times, and connectivity problems. Some owners have also reported issues with the transmission, including rough shifting and hesitation. There have been recalls related to electrical systems, potential rollaway risks, and issues with the fuel system that could lead to stalling. Long-term reliability concerns often center around the air suspension system (if equipped), which can be prone to failures over time and expensive to repair. Additionally, the complexity of the vehicle's electronics can sometimes lead to intermittent glitches. Owners should check the vehicle's recall history and ensure that any outstanding recalls have been addressed. Pre-purchase inspections should focus on the transmission, infotainment system, and any signs of suspension issues. Earlier model years in the WK2 generation (2011-2013) had more widespread reports of electrical issues, but many of these were addressed in later updates. The 2017 model year is generally considered more reliable than the initial years of this generation, but diligent inspection remains crucial.

How long will the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-15 years. Longevity depends heavily on adherence to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule. Key areas to monitor for long-term durability include the transmission, especially with frequent towing or off-road use, and the air suspension (if equipped). The Uconnect system, while improved over earlier years, can still exhibit glitches. Regular fluid changes and proactive maintenance are essential to maximize the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan and lead to costly repairs.

Theses 2017 grand jeeps have a history of the outside fuse box going bad and there's no recall even tho many in 2000's and later have had these issues. They ghosted fixing the 16-20 year models . There's no recall for those years . Major expense to the owner and having to be without a loaner car . Even with extended warranty the owner will still have to pay more on the back end of the repairs. We took ours in to the dealer $100. Up front another sign contract for $600. On the back end . We like the car a lot but feel that the dealer should cover this previous stupid electrical problem. Our Ac comes on and off at any given time. When it turns off you go outside and wiggle the relays and it would return for a while. Cost for a tipm box new is over $500. Used $330 if you're lucky that one will work correctly. Ours did not from the company called Mavs . And they were rude and blunt on the phone. We're sick of this problem! Beware the challengers are very similar. We purchased it with 26,000 miles I found under the air filter an outside temp sensor as if someone changed that before and lost it in the air duct . Someone was trying to fix the problem before hand . We've had it 3 years now with 75,000 miles it all is going bad again .

Bought my 2017 Overland 2WD preowned with 74k miles. It's now Feb of 2024 my Jeep's got 135k on the odometer and I've never once had an issue. I occasionally get car fever, start looking at cars online, but the second I jump behind the wheel of my Grand Cherokee I smile and decide to keep it for a little longer. I still love the look, it's super comfortable, has plenty of power, all the bells and whistles I want (and beyond), and I love the fact not every single thing is touch screen as most modern vehicles. I love I can turn up the volume, operate the AC and many features with good ‘ole KNOBS without taking my eyes off the road.
Chris
I've owned 3 Jeep products (2 Cherokees, and 1 Wrangler) and bought Cherokees 3 for my kids. Now they bought their own. Reliable, durable, and affordable. I love my 2017 Altitude. Looks great. The only thing I had to replace was a water pump at 80,000 miles.

Well documented defect Engine shuts down while in motion No warning lights, no codes and therefore may not get any help from the dealership service department because it does not read a code. Jeep knows about the problem but refuses to do a recall or make repairs on Jeeps with these issues This happened less then 24 hours after I purchased from Ron Craft Dealership in Baytown Texas. Happened 8 times in a ten day period but since it doesn't read a code when hooked up to computer, they say there is nothing wrong and safe to drive. Jeep offers no help either.

SOUTH 63 MOTORS - West Plains, MO (LEMON DEALER) I do NOT recommend South 63 Motors. My friend just bought a 2017 Jeep for almost $18,000 from this dealership 2 weeks ago. THE ENGINE BLEW! My friend was asked to purchase an extended warranty. He said no. However was assured that the dealership had a 30 day return. When he called the dealership the owner would NOT talk to him to try and resolve the problem. This place sells LEMONS. If you are a female/ looking for a new car, if you are clueless when it comes to cars, if you are looking for a used car, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND looking elsewhere. TRUTH HURTS and this place is disgusting.
No more Jeeps for me
The exterior styling is dated, the interior is plastic, and it drove like a soap-box Derby car. The brakes were wooden, the steering was vague, numb, and it wallowed through corners like the 5000-pound, high-centered soccer-mom SUV that it is. The V6 is noisy, and under-powered, and the transmission shifts were so late you'd think that it forgot what a transmission is supposed to even do.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee features a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a 5-inch touchscreen (upgradable to an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect), rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and dual-zone climate control. Higher trims offer features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, navigation, premium audio systems (Harman Kardon), and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Driver-assistance features include available adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and parking assist.
Safety features include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes.
Optional features include a panoramic sunroof, upgraded leather upholstery, and heated/ventilated seats.
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee received generally positive crash-test ratings. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it good ratings in several crash tests, though specific ratings vary depending on the test and model year. It is important to check specific crash test results from both NHTSA and IIHS for the 2017 model year to get a comprehensive understanding of its safety performance. The availability of advanced safety features contributes to its overall safety profile.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from around $30,000 for the base Laredo to over $65,000 for the high-performance Trackhawk. Current used market prices generally range from $18,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim, mileage, condition, and location. Depreciation is typical for its class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, trim level (SRT and Trackhawk hold their value better), and the presence of desirable options like the upgraded infotainment system or safety features. Models with lower mileage and a clean title will command higher prices.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are also moderate, but can increase if the air suspension or complex electronic systems require attention. While not the most economical choice, its versatility and capabilities justify the cost for many owners. Regular maintenance is key to minimizing long-term expenses. The SRT and Trackhawk models will have significantly higher ownership costs due to fuel consumption, insurance, and specialized maintenance.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee competes with SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and Nissan Murano. In terms of performance, the Grand Cherokee, especially with its V8 engines and off-road capabilities, surpasses the Pilot and Murano but is comparable to the 4Runner and Explorer. Feature-wise, it offers a wide range of options, competing well with its rivals. Reliability is generally good, but the 4Runner has a stronger reputation for long-term dependability. Price-wise, the Grand Cherokee is competitive, often positioned between the more budget-friendly Pilot and Murano and the more rugged 4Runner.
Alternatives to consider:
  • Toyota 4Runner: If off-road reliability and longevity are paramount.
  • Ford Explorer: If a more family-oriented SUV with a focus on space and on-road comfort is desired.
  • Honda Pilot: If fuel efficiency and passenger capacity are key considerations.
  • Nissan Murano: If you prefer a stylish design and comfortable ride but don't need serious off-road capability.
The Grand Cherokee stands out for its blend of luxury, performance, and off-road ability, making it a strong contender in its class. However, consider your specific needs and priorities when comparing it to its rivals.

Ranks #1379 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is ideal for individuals or families who need a versatile SUV capable of both daily commutes and weekend adventures. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, if you prioritize a comfortable interior, strong engine options, and available off-road capability. Consider the Limited or Overland trims for a balance of features and value. Thoroughly inspect any used Grand Cherokee, paying particular attention to the maintenance history, transmission, and electronics. If off-roading is a priority, models with four-wheel drive and the Quadra-Trac system are recommended. The SRT and Trackhawk trims offer exhilarating performance but come with higher running costs. If you prioritize reliability above all else, a Toyota 4Runner might be a better choice.

I love my Jeep but is it's hard to continue loving a lemon.

Still loving my Jeep

Not Impressed

I loved my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee from the start, bought it brand new and have done all regular maintenance with synthetic oil changes regularly. Now it is just an expensive lawn ornament because the engine seized without warning. Check engine light flashed twice and the A light flashed twice. We went shopping no problem then parked it at home and 2 days later it wouldn't start. Had it towed in to dealership and they say engine is seized due to no coolant. Now I'm paying for a lawn ornament VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

Jeep Guy

I've owned 3 Jeep products (2 Cherokees, and 1 Wrangler) and bought Cherokees 3 for my kids. Now they bought their own. Reliable, durable, and affordable. I love my 2017 Altitude. Looks great. The only thing I had to replace was a water pump at 80,000 miles.

My Baby's Baby

This is the best car we've ever had! Before my wife passed away, we bought this car (pre-owned), she fell in love with it and insisted on driving everywhere! Since she passed in Sept, 2021, I've been driving it and I LOVE IT TOO! I have some issues with programming/memory, but the dealer assures me they can fix this problem

Great all arounder.

I bought my used 2017 limited around christmas of 2022. Its now may of 23 and i cannot believe how much i like this thing. Always been a ford truck guy but for a great all arounder....this jeep cannot be beat. I got the 3.6L V6, has alot more giddy up then you would expect, tows my 4200lb trailer with ease, and in my daily driving i average around 22mpg. Snow/off road performance is excellent...its not a 78 Bronco but for a modern SUV its very capable. 10inches of slushy snow riding on street tires it ate it up and asked for more. Its comfortable, drives good, and ive put 7000mi on since december with not so much as a hiccup. Reccommend to anyone looking for an SUV.

I love my jeep 🙂

I love my jeep! I have reached the 110k mark and there have been no issues with my jeep. I ensure to do the regular maintenance and keep it running like new. There's a reason why the resale value on jeeps is high 🙂 The interior is comfortable and gives you a feeling of luxury without the crazy high price tag. Honestly the only downside to having a jeep is the mpg, but that is what you get with a jeep:)

Love this Jeep!!!

It's the best vehicle I've ever owned. It's comfortable for road trips and I have the one with the HEMI and it pulls the boat like it doesn't exist.

Dry clean and fully loaded

This vehicle was immaculate. It was nicer than any of the new vehicles on the lot. I intended to purchase a new vehicle but there was a very limited selection. We are very pleased.
