2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review: Impractical, Unwieldy, High-Maintenance, and the Very Best Adventure Vehicle for the Price

Rating: 4.27
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, part of the WJ generation (1999-2004), is a mid-size SUV known for its blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability. Offered in trims like Laredo, Limited, and Overland, it caters to various needs. Its popularity stems from Jeep's reputation for ruggedness and the Grand Cherokee's refined interior compared to earlier models. Pricing typically ranged from around $27,000 to $38,000 new, with used prices varying significantly based on condition and mileage.
The Good

The 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a good balance. Its strengths include capable off-road performance (appealing to adventurous buyers), a comfortable ride for daily driving, and a relatively stylish design for its time. The available V8 engines provide ample power. While not the most efficient, it provides a solid value proposition for those needing a versatile SUV.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee include potential for rust, especially in colder climates. Owners should also watch out for transmission issues, particularly with the 5-speed automatic. Some electrical problems and blend door actuator failures are also known issues. Fuel economy is not a strong point, especially with the V8 engines.

What Problems Does the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

The 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, like other vehicles of its age, has several frequently reported problems. One common issue is the blend door actuator, which controls the temperature of the air coming from the vents. Failure of this part can lead to inconsistent or absent heat or AC. Transmission issues, particularly with the 5-speed automatic, are also reported. Owners have noted rough shifting or complete failure. Rust is a concern, especially in areas with road salt. The undercarriage and body panels are susceptible. Some electrical issues, such as problems with the power windows or door locks, have been noted. The 4.7L V8 engine, while powerful, can sometimes suffer from oil sludge buildup if not properly maintained.

Recalls for the 2004 Grand Cherokee have addressed issues like potential fuel tank leaks. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to see if all applicable recalls have been performed. Long-term reliability hinges on regular maintenance. Neglecting fluid changes, especially transmission fluid, can exacerbate existing weaknesses. Issues related to the cooling system, such as radiator leaks, also need attention to prevent overheating.

How long will the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching 250,000+ miles with regular servicing. However, neglecting maintenance will drastically shorten its lifespan. Key factors are consistent oil changes, transmission fluid services, and addressing issues promptly. Durability is generally good, but weaknesses include rust susceptibility, potential for transmission issues (especially with high mileage), and the aforementioned blend door actuator failures. Well-maintained examples show impressive longevity, while neglected ones can become costly to repair.

But the grand Cherokee 2004 back in 2003 brand new with 2 miles on it. It's still on the road today with over 400,000 miles or original engine and transmission. What do you say to that????!!!!!!

I bought this because of someone at work. I now know it was a very big mistake. When buying I knew it needed a few things but never were able to get to them because other things going wrong ? As I searched the web and talked to other owners these are common problems. I'm a single dad owned this thing for a year it's running me towards bankruptcy. To top it off today I filled it up with gas after paying I notice a wet spot . You guessed it the gas tank is leaking. Went online it's a back and forth if Jeep should recall this gas tank issues because fires have started from this. As I looked at it I agree gas was leaking onto the tail pipe. I'm at a real bad place in life because of this I need to put money into the inspection is due with money I don't really have to throw away now with more problems popping up everytime I turn around. I made a mistake of putting to much money in it that I will never get back ? I don't go off-road and is real easy with it don't know what to do ?

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee's technology is relatively basic by today's standards. Standard features included a cassette/CD player, and some trims offered an upgraded Infinity sound system. Navigation was available as an optional feature. Driver-assistance features were limited; ABS (anti-lock braking system) was standard. Safety features included front airbags and available side curtain airbags. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was available on some models, enhancing stability and traction.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) show mixed results. Frontal crash tests typically earned a 4-star rating for the driver and passenger. Side-impact crash tests varied. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) did not perform extensive testing on the 2004 model.

Optional features included a sunroof, heated seats, and memory seats. The Overland trim offered premium features like rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. Compared to modern vehicles, the 2004 Grand Cherokee lacks advanced safety technologies like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, or automatic emergency braking. Its tech and safety features are adequate for its time but are considerably less advanced than those found in newer SUVs.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from approximately $27,000 for a base Laredo to around $38,000 for a fully loaded Overland. Currently, used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and trim, typically ranging from $3,000 to $8,000. Depreciation has been significant, as with most vehicles of this age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition (rust is a major detractor), mileage, maintenance history, and trim level. Models with the V8 engine and in good condition tend to command slightly higher prices. Low mileage examples in exceptional condition can fetch a premium.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

Long-term ownership costs for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be moderate to high. Insurance costs are relatively affordable due to its age. Fuel economy, especially with the V8, is poor, leading to significant fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs can be unpredictable. While some repairs are straightforward, others (like transmission work) can be costly. Rust repair can also add to the expense. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, but careful maintenance can help mitigate expenses.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee competed with vehicles like the Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of off-road performance, the Grand Cherokee held an advantage over the Explorer but was comparable to the 4Runner. The 4Runner generally had better reliability. Feature-wise, the Explorer offered more available options, while the Pathfinder provided a balance of features and value.

Compared to the Grand Cherokee, the Ford Explorer had independent rear suspension which delivered a more compliant on-road ride but lacked the off-road capability. The Toyota 4Runner was known for its ruggedness and longevity, often outlasting the Grand Cherokee with proper care. The Nissan Pathfinder provided a more car-like driving experience, appealing to those prioritizing on-road comfort.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota 4Runner for superior reliability and off-road prowess (at a higher price point) or a newer, more fuel-efficient SUV like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 if off-roading isn't a priority. However, these lack the Grand Cherokee's towing capacity and V8 power. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Wagon?

The 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee is ideal for buyers seeking a capable and relatively affordable SUV with a blend of on-road comfort and off-road ability. It's worth buying *used* if found in good condition with documented maintenance. The V8 models offer more power but consume more fuel. Carefully inspect for rust and transmission issues before purchasing. Opt for a Limited or Overland trim for more features. If reliability is paramount, a Toyota 4Runner might be a better choice, but for a blend of capability and value, a well-maintained 2004 Grand Cherokee can be a solid option for the right buyer.

But the grand Cherokee 2004 back in 2003 brand new with 2 miles on it. It's still on the road today with over 400,000 miles or original engine and transmission. What do you say to that????!!!!!!

2004 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo

Very reliable vehicle, has been daily driven for over a year and never let me down yet, I'm very picky about my vehicle, so it's very well maintained, the only thing that went out is the cooling fan, which is difficult to change, but I drove it for months without a cooling fan, and it only got hot in traffic jams, but took it like a champ, the l6 is a truly great engine, l is for longitudinal, or straight configuration, not a v engine, I plan on keeping it for a long time.

Engine will last forever

I purchased this vehicle used with 142,000 miles. The previous owner kept very good care of the vehicle. I am tall and really appreciate the interior roominess and space. It has great pickup and I have not needed any repairs at all. It seems the engine will last forever.

Can last a lifetime

If taken care of maintenance wise engine can last 350,000 to 500,000 miles. The 4.0 - 6 cylinder can be noisy but that is the way they are, great motor been around a long long time.

Dependable daily driver, solid off road performer.

In-line 6 cyl, 4.0L engin is legendary for its durability . High torque, almost maintenance free ride. Just change oil and pour gas in it - it will run smooth way over 300 000. Spacious interior, decent cargo area - one of the best Jeep ever built.

imited l6

a easy design l6 engine runs forever and simple to work on the only bad part is the wiring to the doors will brake and would have to be reconnected but its a miner fix. I am getting 18.6 mpg in city and 22.5 mpg on the freeway. I have seen the L6 get well over 400,000 miles on them and still run strong the l6 is bullet proof take a licking and keep ticking.
