The Good
The 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a good balance. Its strengths include capable off-road performance (appealing to adventurous buyers), a comfortable ride for daily driving, and a relatively stylish design for its time. The available V8 engines provide ample power. While not the most efficient, it provides a solid value proposition for those needing a versatile SUV.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee include potential for rust, especially in colder climates. Owners should also watch out for transmission issues, particularly with the 5-speed automatic. Some electrical problems and blend door actuator failures are also known issues. Fuel economy is not a strong point, especially with the V8 engines.

What Problems Does the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?
Recalls for the 2004 Grand Cherokee have addressed issues like potential fuel tank leaks. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to see if all applicable recalls have been performed. Long-term reliability hinges on regular maintenance. Neglecting fluid changes, especially transmission fluid, can exacerbate existing weaknesses. Issues related to the cooling system, such as radiator leaks, also need attention to prevent overheating.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) show mixed results. Frontal crash tests typically earned a 4-star rating for the driver and passenger. Side-impact crash tests varied. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) did not perform extensive testing on the 2004 model.
Optional features included a sunroof, heated seats, and memory seats. The Overland trim offered premium features like rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. Compared to modern vehicles, the 2004 Grand Cherokee lacks advanced safety technologies like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, or automatic emergency braking. Its tech and safety features are adequate for its time but are considerably less advanced than those found in newer SUVs.

How Does the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Wagon?
Compared to the Grand Cherokee, the Ford Explorer had independent rear suspension which delivered a more compliant on-road ride but lacked the off-road capability. The Toyota 4Runner was known for its ruggedness and longevity, often outlasting the Grand Cherokee with proper care. The Nissan Pathfinder provided a more car-like driving experience, appealing to those prioritizing on-road comfort.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota 4Runner for superior reliability and off-road prowess (at a higher price point) or a newer, more fuel-efficient SUV like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 if off-roading isn't a priority. However, these lack the Grand Cherokee's towing capacity and V8 power. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities.

2004 jeep grand Cherokee LaredoVery reliable vehicle, has been daily driven for over a year and never let me down yet, I'm very picky about my vehicle, so it's very well maintained, the only thing that went out is the cooling fan, which is difficult to change, but I drove it for months without a cooling fan, and it only got hot in traffic jams, but took it like a champ, the l6 is a truly great engine, l is for longitudinal, or straight configuration, not a v engine, I plan on keeping it for a long time.

Engine will last foreverI purchased this vehicle used with 142,000 miles. The previous owner kept very good care of the vehicle. I am tall and really appreciate the interior roominess and space. It has great pickup and I have not needed any repairs at all. It seems the engine will last forever.

Can last a lifetimeIf taken care of maintenance wise engine can last 350,000 to 500,000 miles. The 4.0 - 6 cylinder can be noisy but that is the way they are, great motor been around a long long time.

Dependable daily driver, solid off road performer.In-line 6 cyl, 4.0L engin is legendary for its durability . High torque, almost maintenance free ride. Just change oil and pour gas in it - it will run smooth way over 300 000. Spacious interior, decent cargo area - one of the best Jeep ever built.

imited l6a easy design l6 engine runs forever and simple to work on the only bad part is the wiring to the doors will brake and would have to be reconnected but its a miner fix. I am getting 18.6 mpg in city and 22.5 mpg on the freeway. I have seen the L6 get well over 400,000 miles on them and still run strong the l6 is bullet proof take a licking and keep ticking.
