Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee, part of the fourth generation (WK2) launched in 2011, is a mid-size SUV known for its blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability. Key trims include Laredo, Limited, Overland, and the performance-oriented SRT8. New, it ranged from approximately $28,000 to $65,000. Its appeal lies in its upscale interior, powerful engine options, and genuine Jeep off-road prowess, making it a versatile choice for various buyers.
The Good

The 2013 Grand Cherokee offers robust performance, especially with the V8 engine. It provides a comfortable ride and an upscale interior, appealing to those seeking luxury. Its design is both rugged and refined. While not the most fuel-efficient, it holds good value due to its capabilities and features. Emotionally, it delivers the Jeep brand's adventurous spirit; practically, it's a capable SUV for daily driving and outdoor activities.

The Bad

Some owners report transmission problems and concerns about the air suspension (if equipped). Fuel economy, especially with the larger engines, is also a downside. What Problems Does the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee often involve the electrical system. Owners have reported issues with the Uconnect infotainment system freezing or malfunctioning, sensor failures (such as the TPMS), and problems with the power windows and door locks. Transmission issues, including rough shifting and hesitation, are also reported, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. Some owners have experienced problems with the air suspension system, if equipped, leading to costly repairs.

Recalls for the 2013 Grand Cherokee have addressed issues such as faulty fuel tank check valves (potentially causing fuel leaks and fires) and problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the electrical components, the transmission, and the potential for air suspension failures. Routine maintenance, including regular fluid changes and inspections, can help mitigate some of these risks. Prior to purchasing a used 2013 Grand Cherokee, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to identify any potential issues.

How long will the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

A 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with proper maintenance, can realistically achieve 200,000 miles or more. Based on owner data, many reach 10-12 years of service without major issues, provided regular maintenance is followed. Long-term durability largely depends on maintenance habits. Weaknesses often emerge in the electrical system, transmission, and air suspension (if equipped). Neglecting fluid changes, ignoring warning lights, or skipping scheduled maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt.

Negative Owner Reviews

So many issues from repairs to recalls from everything terrible veichle and terrible customer service and the Placentia Jeep. Don?t buy it if you don?t want problems honestly.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee features a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard tech includes a basic audio system, but higher trims offer Uconnect infotainment systems with touchscreen displays, navigation, and smartphone integration. Entertainment features can include premium audio systems from brands like Harman Kardon.

Driver-assistance features vary by trim. Some models offer adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and forward collision warning. A rearview camera is available, and parking sensors are also offered on some trims. Safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control.

Optional features include a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated seats, and a power liftgate. The air suspension system (Quadra-Lift) provides adjustable ride height for improved off-road capability and on-road comfort.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally positive for the 2013 Grand Cherokee. It received good overall scores, providing reassurance regarding its safety performance. However, specific ratings can vary slightly based on the testing criteria used by each organization. Check official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most accurate and up-to-date crash-test information.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from approximately $28,000 to $65,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $20,000+, influenced by mileage, condition, trim, and location. Depreciation has been moderate, with higher trims and those with desirable features holding their value better. Factors affecting resale value include vehicle history, maintenance records, and overall condition. V8 models tend to command a premium compared to V6 versions.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2013 Grand Cherokee are typically moderate, varying based on driving record and location. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with V8 engines. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs can be expensive, particularly for the air suspension and electrical system. Long-term ownership costs are generally higher than average due to potential repairs and fuel consumption. It is not the most economical SUV to own, especially considering the potential for higher repair bills as it ages.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee competes with the Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, Honda Pilot, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Grand Cherokee, especially with the V8, offers a more engaging driving experience than the Pilot and Pathfinder but is similar to the Explorer and 4Runner. Feature-wise, the Grand Cherokee provides a more upscale interior and advanced tech compared to the 4Runner, while the Explorer and Pilot offer more spacious third-row seating.

Reliability is where the Grand Cherokee faces challenges. The Toyota 4Runner is generally considered more reliable. The Honda Pilot also boasts a strong reliability record. The Ford Explorer has its own set of potential issues. Price-wise, the Grand Cherokee typically falls in the middle of the pack, offering a competitive value proposition.

Alternatives to consider: If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota 4Runner or Honda Pilot are better choices. If third-row seating is essential, the Ford Explorer or Honda Pilot are stronger contenders. For a similar blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability, the 4Runner is a viable alternative, albeit with a less refined interior. Great Overall Value

I was very pleasantly surprised by this car. Living in Colorado where we get a lot of snow it's very helpful to have all wheel drive vehicles with high ground clearance. I've always been more of a sports car type of guy, having owned Jeep SRT's in the past and driven some V8 Grand Cherokees so I was hesitant at first to try this one out. What surprised me the most about this Laredo is how light it feels and how efficient the V6 engines are on these models. The maintenance are so affordable and manageable on this car vs the high performance bigger engine models. Personally I've always been a bigger fan of the larger rims with thinner tires for the aesthetics but the wheels and tires on this model have done so well in the Colorado snow seasons and are so smooth when driving year long. The interior on the Laredo's are a bit basic and humble but not bad overall. I'd say that the biggest pro of this car has been its reliability and affordability on its maintenance. I've never felt like it had too many parts that could break and when a part did need to be replaced it was always quick, easy and very affordable.

I absolutely love MY Jeep!

Best vehicle I've ever owned. I feel safe and comfortable in my Grand Cherokee. Proud to call it mine. It has been a wonderful experience so far.

If your looking for a suv that is midsize - Grand Cherokee is the best. Lam at Walser is the best to work with, super friendly and knowledgeable.
