2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review: Nice Midsize SUV With Some High Repair Costs As It Ages

Rating: 4.62
Based on 64 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The Jeep Grand Cherokee, a mid-size SUV, has a long history of blending off-road capability with on-road comfort. The 2021 model is part of the WK2 generation (2011-2022). Key trims include Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and Trailhawk. Its popularity stems from its robust build, luxurious options, and genuine off-road prowess. The 2021 pricing ranged approximately from $35,000 to $65,000, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2021 Grand Cherokee offers a blend of performance with multiple engine options, and a comfortable, upscale interior. Its classic Jeep design and off-road capability appeal to emotional buyers. Practical advantages include a spacious cabin, available 4x4, and a solid reputation (though reliability can vary). It balances ruggedness with refinement.

The Bad

The 2021 Grand Cherokee's weaknesses include fuel economy, which is not class-leading, and potentially higher maintenance costs compared to some rivals. Some owners have reported issues with the Uconnect system and electrical glitches. Reliability can be a concern, so a thorough pre-purchase inspection is advised, especially checking for transmission issues.

What Problems Does the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, while generally well-regarded, has faced some frequently reported problems and recalls. Uconnect infotainment system glitches, including screen freezes and unresponsive controls, are a common complaint. Some owners have experienced electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors or intermittent lighting problems. Transmission issues, including rough shifting or failure, have been reported, although not widespread. Air suspension problems, especially in higher trims like Overland and Summit, can occur, leading to costly repairs.
Recalls have been issued for various issues, including potential problems with the rearview camera, powertrain control module, and antilock braking system. Owners should check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information and ensure any necessary repairs have been performed.
Long-term reliability can be a concern. While the Grand Cherokee is known for its durability, issues like the air suspension and Uconnect system can contribute to higher maintenance costs over time. Some model years within the WK2 generation (2011-2022) have had more reported issues than others, so researching specific model year issues is recommended before purchasing a used Grand Cherokee. Regularly scheduled maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can help mitigate potential long-term problems.

How long will the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

With proper maintenance, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee can typically last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles, or 10 to 13 years of service. Owner data suggests that consistent oil changes, timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires, and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial for longevity. Long-term durability is generally good, but potential weaknesses include the Uconnect system (which can become outdated or fail), air suspension (if equipped), and potential for increased maintenance as the vehicle ages. Rust can also be an issue in regions with harsh winters.

My Grand Cherokee Laredo E just turned 50,000 miles a few days ago. Other than routine maintenance, the only money that I have invested in it was for 4 tires last month. Extremely comfortable, capable and reliable. While not delivering Prius-like gas mileage, given the performance it provides in all types of weather.............NO COMPLAINTS !
Chris
Love my GC 80th Anniversary Edition. A little over 15K miles and she's been in the shop 2 times now with a squeaking coming from the engine. Tensioner rod and idle sensor were replaced first, they had it for almost a month. alternator was just replaced, they had it for a week. Picked her up last night, drove her this morning and it's still squeaking! Very frustrated but hoping to get her fixed!
Bella
We special ordered the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. The vehicle is all black inside and out. The paint is a Diamond Gloss Black Metalic. The day after delivery we had the entire finish done with Ceramic Coating. We've had this vehicle for a year and the fit and finish is like new. The Ride is tight and still handles great. Fuel mileage is now 21 City. We're sorry to see they will no longer produce this vehicle!!

Nothing but problems. You will first have to replace water pump and radiator after you leave the lot. And cam shaft will eventually have to be replaced . Mine was right after warranty expired. 5.0 hemi cam shaft will need to be replaced $5000 repair cost.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee features a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The standard Uconnect 4 system includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims offer an 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation. Available entertainment features include a premium Harman Kardon sound system and a rear-seat entertainment system with Blu-ray player.
Driver-assistance features include standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, and rear parking sensors. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and parallel and perpendicular park assist.
Safety features include advanced multistage front airbags, supplemental side-curtain airbags, and electronic stability control. The 2021 Grand Cherokee received generally positive crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), though specific ratings may vary depending on the model and year. It's important to check the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most up-to-date crash-test results.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from approximately $35,000 for the base Laredo trim to $65,000+ for the high-performance Trackhawk. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and trim level, but generally range from $25,000 to $50,000. Depreciation is moderate for the Grand Cherokee. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and trim level. Models with popular options like 4x4 and premium audio tend to hold their value better.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are also average, but repairs can be more expensive than some competitors, particularly for the air suspension and Uconnect system. Long-term ownership costs can be mitigated with regular maintenance, but it's not the most economical choice in its segment.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee competes with vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer, Honda Passport, and Kia Telluride. In terms of performance, the Grand Cherokee offers a broader range of engine options, including powerful V8s not available in some competitors. Feature-wise, it's competitive, offering a good balance of tech and comfort. Reliability is where it lags behind Toyota and Honda. The 4Runner is more rugged and reliable, while the Passport offers better fuel economy. The Telluride provides more value and a more modern interior.
Compared to the Ford Explorer, the Grand Cherokee offers a more upscale feel in higher trims, but the Explorer often has more cargo space and a third-row option (depending on the Explorer configuration).
Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota 4Runner: For superior reliability and off-road capability, if you don't need the Grand Cherokee's luxury.
  • Kia Telluride: For excellent value, a spacious interior, and a long warranty.
  • Ford Explorer: For more cargo space and a third-row seating option.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and needs.

Ranks #1209 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is ideal for those seeking a blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability, with a range of engine options to suit different needs. It's worth buying if you appreciate its classic Jeep styling and don't mind potentially higher running costs. Buying used can be a good option, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial to check for potential issues. The Limited or Overland trims offer a good balance of features and value. The Trackhawk is for those seeking high performance. Consider alternatives if reliability is a top priority.

Perfect New England Vehicle !

What can you expect for over $60,000.00, sucks!

Not happy with the stereo system for starters, when put into reverse makes wierd growling type noises? Now engine sounds like a worn out old car with mega lifter noises?? I expected way more from jeep and over $60,000.00 spent. Not happy, only 7000 miles on the rig and thinking about trying to trade for something else!

GREAT SUV - GOES ANYWHERE

We are very happy with our '21 GC Limited. It is well appointed, with many options, drives nice, comfortable and still sits higher, unlike a lot of other "car" SUV's. We use this as our only vehicle, and flat tow behind our motorhome. Jeeps are the best vehicles made to flat tow!! We have climbed dirt trails in the West and cruised coastal waterways. Love it.

Out of service 31 days

I am totally amazed that the rating is over zero, ours has been in Naples dealership for 31 days as of today. Waiting for parts on the 14 recalls. We've had horrible response from the dealership regarding taking the junk back. It's a 2021 L model. Very low mileage of course, it lives in the service department.

Frustrated but happy

Love my GC 80th Anniversary Edition. A little over 15K miles and she's been in the shop 2 times now with a squeaking coming from the engine. Tensioner rod and idle sensor were replaced first, they had it for almost a month. alternator was just replaced, they had it for a week. Picked her up last night, drove her this morning and it's still squeaking! Very frustrated but hoping to get her fixed!

Best Jeep Ever!

5.0 hemi cam shaft will need to be replaced

Nothing but problems. You will first have to replace water pump and radiator after you leave the lot. And cam shaft will eventually have to be replaced . Mine was right after warranty expired. 5.0 hemi cam shaft will need to be replaced $5000 repair cost.

DONT BUY JEEP. SAVE YOUR MONEY

I just recently purchased a 2021 jeep grand cherokee trailhawk 2 weeks ago, may 4th 2022. Within the first week, the panoramic sunroof leaks like crazy, the back up camera is pixelated and looks like a cartoon, and the service air suspension icon is on already, and haven't even taken it offroad. Do yourselves a favor, and avoid the jeep brand, and buy something like a hyunday palisade or something else. You'll thank me later

Best SUV, heck best vehicle I have ever owned!

Grand Cherokees are awesome everyday vehicles and even better for traveling for up to 3 with room for luggage! The only suggestion I can make is less trim lines of the Grand! I have the Overland HA version!
