The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-size SUV with a legacy of blending off-road capability with on-road comfort. It's part of the fourth generation (WK2), which began in 2011. Key trims include Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and the performance-oriented SRT. New pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $65,000 depending on trim and options. Its broad appeal stems from its versatility, luxurious interiors, and potent engine options.
The Good

The 2016 Grand Cherokee offers strong performance, particularly with the V8 engines. It provides a comfortable and luxurious interior. Its rugged design and off-road prowess appeal to emotional buyers, while practical buyers appreciate its spaciousness, towing capacity, and available safety features. Reliability is generally good, and it holds its value well compared to some rivals.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include fuel economy, especially with the V8 engines. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and electrical components. Air suspension, available on higher trims, can be expensive to repair. Check for oil leaks and ensure proper maintenance records, particularly for transmission services. Earlier model years of the WK2 generation had more reported issues.

What Problems Does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee has some frequently reported problems. Infotainment system glitches, including Uconnect freezing or being unresponsive, are common. Some owners have reported issues with the electrical system, such as sensor malfunctions or problems with the power windows and door locks. Air suspension issues, particularly in Overland and Summit trims, can be expensive to fix. Transmission issues, including rough shifting or failure, have also been reported, although less frequently.

Recalls for the 2016 model year have included issues related to the transmission, rollaway risk, and airbag deployment. It's crucial to check the VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing a used model. Long-term reliability can be a concern, especially with the air suspension and complex electronics. Maintaining the vehicle according to the manufacturer's recommendations, including regular fluid changes, is essential to mitigate potential issues. While the 2016 model is generally considered more reliable than some earlier WK2 years (e.g., 2011-2013), these potential problems should be considered during the inspection process.

How long will the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Years of service typically range from 10 to 15 years, depending on usage and care. Long-term durability can be affected by factors like climate and driving conditions. Regular maintenance, including oil changes, transmission services, and cooling system flushes, is crucial. Weaknesses over time include potential air suspension failures (if equipped), increased risk of electrical issues, and the need for more frequent repairs as components age. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters.

My dream car since a teenager was a grand Cherokee and when I finally got one in 2021, I've loved it the same ever since. They are bold in appearance and look like a strong vehicle. It has always run beautifully and I have had no issues thus far since 2021 and now it's 2024. Very comfortable interior and attractive to the eye. Love love love my car.

58,000 miles - here's the issues: Replaced the water pump four times. Replaced humidity sensor. Replaced transmission heater. Replaced fuel pressure sensor. Replaced radio system twice. AC Freon is R1234vf, won't cool below 44 degrees at center stack. Radio has no on/off button. Very annoying, can only turn volume down when turning car off or it blares when you start the car. Luckily all of this was covered under original factory warranty or two extended warranties. Spent thousands on extended warranties to cover thousands of repairs. No confidence on traveling cross country with water pump issues. All service and repairs have been done by Dodge dealers.

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from around $30,000 for the base Laredo to over $65,000 for the fully loaded Summit or SRT. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim, typically ranging from $15,000 to $35,000. Depreciation is moderate for the Grand Cherokee, holding its value better than some competitors due to its strong brand reputation and off-road capabilities. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident-free status, and desirable options like the V8 engine and four-wheel drive. Lower mileage examples and well-maintained vehicles command higher prices.

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee are generally moderate, but can be higher for the SRT trim. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are average for its class, but air suspension repairs (if applicable) can be expensive. Overall, the Grand Cherokee is not the most economical vehicle to own, particularly with the V8 engines. Long-term ownership costs should be considered carefully, especially concerning potential repairs.

How Does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee competes with the Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, Honda Pilot, and Nissan Murano. Compared to the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee offers a more luxurious interior and superior off-road capabilities. The 4Runner is more rugged and reliable but lacks the Grand Cherokee's refinement. The Pilot provides more passenger space and better fuel economy but isn't as capable off-road. The Murano offers a more stylish design but less power and towing capacity.

In terms of reliability, the Toyota 4Runner generally surpasses the Grand Cherokee. Feature-wise, the Grand Cherokee is competitive, especially in higher trims. Price-wise, it's generally comparable to its rivals. Alternatives to consider include the Lexus RX for a more luxurious experience or the Acura MDX for better reliability and fuel economy. The Land Rover Discovery Sport offers similar off-road capability, but with potentially higher maintenance costs. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities, with the Grand Cherokee excelling in balancing luxury, capability, and performance.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a versatile SUV ideal for those seeking a balance of luxury, performance, and off-road capability. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, if you prioritize these attributes. Consider a Limited or Overland trim for a good blend of features and value. The SRT is best for performance enthusiasts. Due to potential reliability concerns, a thorough inspection and maintenance history are crucial. Avoid models with extensive off-road use or signs of neglect. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Lexus RX or Acura MDX. But if you want the Jeep’s unique blend of attributes, and can find a well-maintained example, it’s a compelling choice.

Car was purchased with less than 10 miles on odometer. Would not recommend anyone to purchase this model. About every 10 months we're back at the shop. Electrical and braking issues.

First class dealership

We bought this car for our daughter. Elvis could not have been any better. He was so patient with us and I would recommend anyone looking for a vehicle to go see Elvis. He was a rock star. I was in the car business for 30 years and he exceeded our expectations of how we wanted to be treated. Five Star Dealership and sales person.

best version of the Grand Cherokee in 2016.

This my 5th and best Grand Cherokee. I ordered this one with the diesel engine and love it. We get 28 to 30MPG on the highway and almost as much in city. Range is 600 to 700 miles. I have the Overland Summit model. If I had a negative I'd say the sound system is not up to pay. The U Connect system is very intuitive however.

I always wanted a Jeep

I enjoy the vehicle. It is the Overland model with the High-Altitude trim package. Very comfortable. Full size spare tire non-visible under the cargo area. Drawbacks: 1. It is like driving a computer. For an old guy (78) like me it took a lot of learning. My 12-year-old Grandson helped me out. 2. The consul is small with nowhere to set things down. 2 cup holders that fill up with stuff for lack of other places to put things. Nowhere to hang a trash bag. There are three storage areas: the usual glove box and two under the arm rest built into the consul which are very difficult to use when underway. Bottom Line: I love my Jeep.
