Rating: 3.99
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2002 Ford Explorer is a mid-size SUV, part of the third generation (2002-2005). This generation marked a significant redesign. It's known for its truck-based body-on-frame construction. Key trims include the XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. Pricing when new ranged roughly from $25,000 to $35,000. Its popularity stemmed from its ruggedness, towing capacity, and available third-row seating, making it a versatile family vehicle.
The Good

The 2002 Ford Explorer offers decent performance with available V6 and V8 engines. Its traditional SUV design appeals to those seeking a rugged aesthetic. The spacious interior provides comfort for families. For practical buyers, the Explorer boasts a solid towing capacity and reasonable value on the used market. The availability of 4x4 caters to emotional needs for off-road capability.

The Bad

The 2002 Ford Explorer has known weaknesses. Potential buyers should watch out for transmission issues, particularly with the 5R55W automatic. Suspension problems, including premature ball joint wear, are also common. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, is another concern. Fuel economy is subpar compared to modern SUVs. Check for leaks.

What Problems Does the 2002 Ford Explorer Have?

The 2002 Ford Explorer has several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. Transmission issues, particularly with the 5R55W automatic transmission, are common complaints. This can manifest as slipping, rough shifting, or complete failure. Suspension problems, including premature wear of ball joints and other components, are also reported, leading to handling issues and increased maintenance costs. Rust is a significant concern, especially in areas where road salt is used. Check the undercarriage, rocker panels, and wheel wells for signs of corrosion.

Ford issued recalls for the 2002 Explorer related to various issues, including tire defects (Firestone tire issues affected earlier Explorers but continued into the early 2000s), potential fuel tank strap corrosion, and problems with the speed control system.

Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues, as well as general wear and tear. The V6 engine is generally considered more reliable than the V8, but both require regular maintenance. Electrical issues, such as problems with the anti-theft system and power windows/locks, can also arise. Regular servicing and careful inspection before purchase are crucial to mitigate potential problems.

How long will the 2002 Ford Explorer last?

A 2002 Ford Explorer, given diligent maintenance, can reach 200,000 miles or more. Many have seen over 25 years of service. However, longevity is heavily dependent on maintenance. Neglecting transmission servicing, ignoring rust prevention, or skipping regular oil changes will drastically shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is affected by rust, suspension wear, and transmission health. While the engines are generally robust, the transmission remains a key weak point. Regular fluid changes and proactive repairs are essential for maximizing lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
This Explorer has been a workhorse for our family. It's spacious and comfortable for long trips. However, the gas mileage is definitely a drawback.
Sarah M.
I bought this Explorer used several years ago and it's still running great. I've kept up with the maintenance and it's been very reliable.
Emily K.
This Explorer is perfect for hauling kids and cargo. The third-row seating is a plus, although a bit cramped for adults.
Negative Owner Reviews
David L.
The ride is smooth and the seats are comfortable, but it definitely shows its age in terms of technology and features. Still a decent SUV for the price.
Michael B.
I've had a few minor repairs, like the window motor and a sensor. But overall, it's been a dependable vehicle.
Robert P.
It's an older vehicle, so it has some wear and tear. But it still gets me where I need to go.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Ford Explorer's tech features were fairly basic by today's standards. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with cassette or CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with multiple speakers and sometimes a subwoofer.

Driver-assistance features were limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard, and some models had traction control. Parking sensors were not commonly available.

Safety features included dual front airbags and available side airbags (optional).

Optional features included:
  • Sunroof
  • Leather Seats
  • Automatic Climate Control
  • Upgraded Audio Systems
  • 4x4 System
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) crash-test ratings for the 2002 Ford Explorer varied. It generally received good ratings for frontal crash protection. However, rollover ratings were a point of concern, as with many SUVs of that era. Always consult official safety ratings for specific configurations and years.

Compared to modern vehicles, the 2002 Explorer lacks advanced features like infotainment screens, smartphone integration, and driver-assistance systems such as lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking. It is imperative to take note of these limitations when driving this vehicle.

2002 Ford Explorer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Ford Explorer ranged from approximately $25,000 to $35,000, depending on trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to age and high mileage. Resale value is influenced by factors such as overall condition, maintenance history, 4x4 availability, and trim level (Eddie Bauer and Limited generally command higher prices). Low mileage and a clean title can also increase value. Rust presence significantly decreases value.

2002 Ford Explorer Cost of Ownership

The 2002 Ford Explorer is generally considered costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are moderate. Fuel economy is poor, leading to high fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant due to the vehicle's age and potential issues with the transmission and suspension. Parts availability is generally good, but labor costs can be high. Rust repair can also be expensive. Overall, budgeting for frequent maintenance and potential repairs is essential for long-term ownership.

2002 Ford Explorer Insurance

Insurance for a 2002 Ford Explorer is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Ford Explorer Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2002 Ford Explorer competed with rivals like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Toyota 4Runner. In terms of performance, the Explorer's V8 engine was competitive, but its fuel economy lagged behind some competitors. Features were generally comparable, though the Toyota 4Runner often had a reputation for better reliability. The Trailblazer offered a slightly more modern interior design.

Regarding reliability, the Explorer's transmission issues and suspension problems give the Toyota 4Runner a considerable edge. While the Jeep Grand Cherokee offered similar off-road capability, its reliability was also a concern.

Price-wise, the Explorer is often more affordable on the used market compared to the 4Runner, reflecting its lower reliability reputation.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota 4Runner: If reliability is a top priority.
  • Lexus RX 300/330: Offers a more luxurious and refined experience with better reliability than the Explorer, but at a higher price point.
  • A newer, more fuel-efficient SUV: If fuel costs are a concern.

Ranks #705 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Ford Explorer a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2002 Ford Explorer is ideal for budget-conscious buyers needing a capable SUV for occasional towing or family hauling, and are comfortable with potential maintenance needs. It's not recommended as a primary vehicle due to its age and potential reliability issues. It's only worth buying if it's in excellent condition, has a documented maintenance history, and is priced accordingly. Prioritize models with fewer miles and no signs of rust or transmission problems. Consider a well-maintained Eddie Bauer or Limited trim for added features. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is essential. A Toyota 4Runner is a much better buy if reliability is more important than initial cost.
