Rating: 4.47
Based on 87 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2021 Ford Explorer is a popular mid-size SUV, part of the Explorer's sixth generation (2020-present). Its body style is a classic SUV with three rows of seating. Key trims include Base, XLT, Limited, ST, and Platinum. The original MSRP ranged from approximately $33,000 to $55,000+ depending on the trim and options. It's popular due to its spaciousness, powerful engine options, and versatility, making it suitable for families and adventure seekers alike.
The Good

The 2021 Ford Explorer offers a blend of advantages. Performance-wise, the available powerful engines deliver satisfying acceleration and towing capability. Its modern design and comfortable interior appeal to emotional buyers. Practically, it provides ample space, decent fuel efficiency (depending on the engine), and overall good value for a family SUV.

The Bad

The 2021 Ford Explorer has some known weaknesses. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the infotainment system, transmission, and electrical components. The ride quality can be firm, and the interior materials in lower trims might feel less premium than competitors. Early model year production can have more issues.

What Problems Does the 2021 Ford Explorer Have?

The 2021 Ford Explorer has had its share of reported problems and recalls. Frequently reported issues include problems with the infotainment system (SYNC), specifically glitches, screen freezing, and connectivity issues. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or hesitation, have also been reported by some owners. Electrical problems, including issues with the battery and various sensors, are another common concern.

Recalls for the 2021 Explorer have addressed concerns such as potential rear suspension toe link fracture, which could increase the risk of a crash. Other recalls have involved issues with the powertrain, potentially leading to unintended vehicle movement. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls.

Long-term reliability is a mixed bag. While some owners report trouble-free experiences, others have faced ongoing issues. The 2020 and 2021 model years, being early in the sixth generation, tend to have more reported problems than later years. Potential buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to assess its condition and identify any potential issues.

How long will the 2021 Ford Explorer last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2021 Ford Explorer can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-12 years. Proper maintenance is key, including timely oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing any emerging issues promptly.

Long-term durability can be affected by the issues mentioned previously, especially electrical gremlins and transmission concerns. Rust can be a potential issue in regions with harsh winters. Regular inspections and addressing any signs of corrosion can help extend the vehicle's lifespan. The infotainment system might also show its age over time, becoming outdated compared to newer models.
Positive Owner Reviews
Samantha J.
The Explorer is a great choice for families. Plenty of room for passengers and cargo. The ride is smooth and the features are well-designed. Fuel economy could be better.
David M.
I've had my Explorer for a couple of years now and it's been very reliable. The interior is spacious and comfortable, and the technology is easy to use. I appreciate the safety features.
Robert K.
We've taken our Explorer on several long road trips and it's been fantastic. The seats are comfortable, and the cargo space is ample for all our luggage. The driver-assist features make highway driving a breeze.
Negative Owner Reviews
Jessica L.
Overall, the Explorer is a decent SUV. However, I've noticed some minor issues with the infotainment system. The engine performance is adequate, but not particularly exciting.
Michelle P.
I was expecting more from the Explorer. The interior materials feel a bit cheap for the price, and I've had some trouble with the automatic liftgate. It's okay, but not amazing.
Christopher A.
The fuel economy is just okay. I was hoping for better gas mileage, especially on the highway. Otherwise, the Explorer is a solid SUV.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Ford Explorer boasts a comprehensive suite of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with FordPass Connect (Wi-Fi hotspot), Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen.

Entertainment features range from a standard 6-speaker audio system to an available Bang & Olufsen (B&O) premium sound system. Optional features include a rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, encompassing features like pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and a rearview camera. Adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and a 360-degree camera are available as optional features.

Safety features include stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags. The 2021 Ford Explorer received good crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), although specific ratings can vary depending on the configuration. Always refer to the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most up-to-date ratings.

2021 Ford Explorer Prices and Market Value

The 2021 Ford Explorer had a starting MSRP of around $33,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $55,000 or more. Current used market prices range from approximately $25,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim, mileage, condition, and location.

The Explorer depreciates at a moderate rate. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and any accident history. Higher trims and those with desirable options tend to hold their value better. Demand for SUVs also influences resale prices. Models with a clean history and low mileage will command the highest prices.

2021 Ford Explorer Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2021 Ford Explorer are typically moderate, reflecting its class and safety features. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine, with the hybrid being the most economical. Maintenance and repair costs can be average to slightly above average, particularly if issues arise with the transmission or infotainment system. Overall, the 2021 Explorer is not the most economical SUV to own, but it's not excessively costly either. Potential owners should factor in potential repairs when budgeting.

2021 Ford Explorer Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Ford Explorer is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Ford Explorer Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Ford Explorer competes with other mid-size SUVs like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade. In terms of performance, the Explorer's ST trim offers a sportier driving experience than most rivals, but the Highlander is known for its strong V6 and the Telluride/Palisade offer a comfortable ride.

Feature-wise, the Explorer is generally well-equipped, but the Telluride and Palisade often offer more standard features for the price. The Highlander and Pilot have better reliability reputations than the Explorer, while the Telluride/Palisade are relatively new but showing promise.

Price-wise, the Explorer is competitive, but incentives can vary.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota Highlander: Known for reliability and resale value.
  • Honda Pilot: A practical and spacious choice.
  • Kia Telluride/Hyundai Palisade: Offer excellent value and features.
The Telluride or Palisade might be a better choice for those prioritizing value and features, while the Highlander is a safer bet for long-term reliability. The Explorer ST appeals to those seeking performance.

Ranks #512 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Ford Explorer a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Ford Explorer is a decent choice for families needing a spacious and versatile SUV, particularly if performance is a priority. However, it's essential to be aware of the potential reliability issues. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a clean history and consider a pre-purchase inspection.

Used models offer better value due to depreciation. Opting for a later production 2021 or newer may mitigate some of the early model year issues. The ST trim is ideal for those wanting a sporty SUV, while the Limited trim provides a good balance of features and comfort. For ultimate peace of mind, consider alternatives with better reliability records.

Excellent for Road Trips

We've taken our Explorer on several long road trips and it's been fantastic. The seats are comfortable, and the cargo space is ample for all our luggage. The driver-assist features make highway driving a breeze.

Slightly Disappointed

I was expecting more from the Explorer. The interior materials feel a bit cheap for the price, and I've had some trouble with the automatic liftgate. It's okay, but not amazing.
