Rating: 3.97
Based on 63 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2000 Ford Explorer is a mid-size SUV, part of the second generation (1995-2001). Available in a five-door SUV body style, it offered a blend of truck-like capability and family-friendly features. Key trims included the XL, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. New, the pricing ranged approximately from $25,000 to $35,000. Its popularity stemmed from its rugged image, spacious interior, and towing capacity, making it a go-to choice for active families.
The Good

The 2000 Ford Explorer offered robust performance with its available V6 and V8 engines. Its comfortable ride and spacious cabin appealed to families. A practical choice due to its towing capability and cargo space, the Explorer also evoked a sense of adventure and freedom, attracting buyers seeking a rugged and versatile vehicle. For the price, it provided solid value.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2000 Ford Explorer include potential transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmissions. Suspension components, especially ball joints, can wear prematurely. Fuel economy is not a strong point. The model years within this generation are also known for issues with the rear liftgate and rust.

What Problems Does the 2000 Ford Explorer Have?

The 2000 Ford Explorer, like many vehicles of its era, has some frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. One notable issue is the automatic transmission, specifically the 5R55E, which can experience slipping or failure, especially at higher mileage. Suspension components, particularly ball joints, tend to wear out prematurely, leading to loose steering and potential safety hazards. Rust is another common concern, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt usage; it often affects the undercarriage, body panels, and the rear liftgate.
Recalls for the 2000 Explorer, and similar model years, have included concerns about tire failures (related to the Firestone tire controversy), which led to numerous lawsuits and recalls. While not specific to the 2000 model year alone, the Explorer's association with these tire issues significantly impacted its reputation.
Long-term reliability concerns also extend to electrical issues, such as malfunctioning power windows, door locks, and audio systems. The climate control system can also develop problems over time. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly are crucial for extending the lifespan of a 2000 Ford Explorer.

How long will the 2000 Ford Explorer last?

A 2000 Ford Explorer, with proper maintenance, can realistically achieve 200,000 miles or more. However, the actual lifespan heavily depends on owner care. Neglecting routine maintenance, such as oil changes and transmission servicing, will significantly shorten its lifespan. Areas prone to rust will see accelerated deterioration. The transmission is a known weak point; consistent servicing is crucial. Regular inspections of suspension components and prompt repairs can also extend the vehicle's service life. Expect 15-20 years of service with conscientious maintenance.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
This Explorer has been a workhorse for me. It's comfortable and capable, especially in bad weather. However, the fuel economy is definitely its weak point.
David L.
I've kept up with the maintenance, and this Explorer just keeps going. It's not fancy, but it's dependable.
Michael B.
The ride quality is surprisingly good for its age. Of course, the technology is very outdated compared to modern vehicles.
Negative Owner Reviews
Sarah M.
We used this Explorer as our primary family car for many years. It had plenty of space for kids and cargo. It's showing its age now, but it served us well.
Emily K.
I bought this Explorer used as a budget-friendly option. It's been a good value, but I've had to do some repairs.
Jessica P.
It's fine for running errands around town, but I wouldn't want to take it on a long road trip. The seats aren't the most comfortable.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Ford Explorer, by modern standards, features limited tech. Base models typically included a basic AM/FM radio. Higher trims like the Eddie Bauer and Limited offered cassette players and optional CD players. Driver-assistance features were rudimentary, limited to anti-lock brakes (ABS) and, in some models, four-wheel drive. Safety features included dual front airbags. Side airbags were not generally available.
Optional features included a premium sound system, sunroof, and leather upholstery. The Explorer lacked features like navigation systems, rearview cameras, or advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) common in newer vehicles.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2000 Ford Explorer generally showed decent performance for frontal impacts, but side-impact protection was less impressive. Keep in mind that crash-test standards have evolved significantly since 2000, so these ratings should be viewed in the context of vehicles from that era. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) may have conducted limited testing as well, but results should be verified on their website.

2000 Ford Explorer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Ford Explorer had an MSRP ranging from approximately $25,000 to $35,000, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, on the used market, prices range widely, typically from $2,000 to $6,000 or even less, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, reflecting the vehicle's age and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance records, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. Models in excellent condition with low mileage command higher prices. The tire controversy also likely affected the resale value of this generation of Explorers.

2000 Ford Explorer Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2000 Ford Explorer are typically relatively low due to its age and depreciated value. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on the engine and driving habits. Maintenance can be moderately expensive, especially if significant repairs are needed. Given the age of the vehicle, expect potential repairs related to rust, transmission, and suspension. Long-term ownership costs can be high if the vehicle is not properly maintained or if significant repairs are required. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, especially compared to newer, more fuel-efficient models.

2000 Ford Explorer Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Ford Explorer is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Ford Explorer Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2000 Ford Explorer competed with vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Blazer/Trailblazer, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Explorer offered comparable engine options and towing capacity to its rivals. Features were generally similar, though the Explorer's interior design was considered somewhat dated compared to some competitors.
Reliability was a mixed bag. The Explorer had known issues with its transmission and suspension, putting it behind the Toyota 4Runner in terms of long-term reliability. The Jeep Grand Cherokee offered similar off-road capabilities but also suffered from reliability concerns.
Price-wise, the Explorer was competitive, often undercutting the 4Runner. However, the Chevrolet Blazer/Trailblazer sometimes offered a lower entry price.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota 4Runner (for superior reliability), the Nissan Pathfinder (for a more refined driving experience), or a newer, more fuel-efficient SUV if practicality and fuel economy are primary concerns. A well-maintained Jeep Grand Cherokee from the same era could also be a similar alternative, though reliability should be carefully evaluated.

Ranks #714 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Ford Explorer a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2000 Ford Explorer is ideal for someone seeking an affordable, older SUV with decent towing capacity and a spacious interior. It's not a good choice for those prioritizing fuel efficiency or cutting-edge technology. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on the condition of the specific vehicle and its maintenance history. Look for examples with detailed service records, minimal rust, and a well-maintained transmission. Avoid models with a history of neglect or abuse. A higher trim like the Eddie Bauer or Limited offers more features, but reliability is key. Given its age, buying a 2000 Explorer is generally only advisable as a temporary or budget-friendly option, understanding that repairs may be necessary.

Lots of Little Issues

This Explorer has developed a lot of small problems over the years. Nothing major, but it's been nickel-and-diming me.

Good Value if You Can Find One in Good Condition

Safe and Sturdy

I always felt safe driving this Explorer, especially with my kids in the back. It feels very solid.
